I started this topic because almost every time if there comes a cruiseship i go to Rotterdam as soon as i can :thumbs:.

Porbably because we have a lot of coastline, and lots of places for vessels to berth. America has one coastline, where as Europe is amde up of islands in funny shapes to give maximum coastlines

Why did she come in backwards this year?
Maybe because of the wind and/or tide. It also creates a traffic jam if she turns at the Cruise Terminal, i don't think the VTS is happy about that.. ;D

How is that? I thought a ship like this only gets haunted when people died on it.Because the longer a ship is in service the bigger chance of someone dying aboard it. Also if it served as a troop ship at one point it has an even bigger chance of being haunted. :thumbs:

Red is where any cruise ship higher then 53 meters more, because the bridge is 55 meters above sea level
Blue is where smaller cruise ships like 49 meters and lower more
Big cruisers more infront of the bridge and are not allowed too deeper :doh:

My issue isn't with the ships themselves- the yard that built them is a very good one. My issue is with their future and... well let us just say if I were to put my comments about the professional standards of some ferry operators then I dare say a goderator would delete this post on the grounds it may offend some employees at that once great flag carrier ferry operation.
Indeed, my prediction is that certain new ferries- which may or may not be the two in question- will soon be handed over to a new operator.

Every forum member is less then 30 meters closer to a cruise shipIt's not possible to go that close to a cruise ship in every port, but the cruise terminal in Venice is built very ship spotter friendly. I also think in europe the security regulations are not as stict as in the US since 9/11.

Grand Princess, to the left, is she a sister ship of the Azura? They look identical.
Both are made from the Grand Class line of ships. The only thing that differs is that they belong to a different company. ;)

Norwegian owners sold NCL to an Asian company many years ago. For some reason the new owners didn't change the company name or ship names. So, in case you didn't know, it has nothing to do with Norway anymore.
Only 50% ownership has been sold to that Asian company called Star Cruises. ;)

@Rbsanford, that 'snijkop' is used for dredging, to loosen sturdy materials on the bottom and sucking them up meanwhile.

Well I did some research on Shipspottin.com and I was looking at some yachts with build year 2012 and in dutch waters and I saw a yacht with a name Oceanco Y703 also a very impressive yacht but i suddenly remembered that in the yacht her AIS name was Oceanco so I searched Oceanco and I found this!

Well that problem have I also when I see a nice vessel.ah its for dreging! fair enough - i thought i was for oil :doh:
The Cutter is for operations what a Hopper can't do, a hopper can only dredge: Sand,Gravel and soft clay (Hard clay is to hard to dredge), so if the hopper can't do it they will send a cutter to dredge because with the big teeth they can dredge: Rock, hard clay and other harder stuff that a dredger can't dredge.

Something you don´t see everyday a 14 metre long whale (dead) that the KNRM was trying to beach, the whale was found in the noon by a fisherman, because the whale was floating in the middle of a fairway she had to be moved, after some hours behind the SAR vessel De Redder the plan was made to beach the whale North of ScheveningenInteresting to see how they deal with a whale - do they normally beach it?

Good, more Port State Authorities need to be checking more cruise ships more strictly for crew working hours and handing out more and bigger fines to the cruise companies, maybe then they will get the message that seafarers are not just there to be abused.

I see that you have a small helicopter for the camera (I don't know how it is called) Where did you buy it from and was it expensive?
It is called a drone, I have bought is second hand.
It is quite expensive if you buy one new (The drone itself is not so expensive but al the other things on it).

Nice Pics! I was up in Southampton itself, on the Wight Scene doing a tour - actually sailed alongside the QM2 for a short time! Defintley a impressive site, just a shame about the weather :-\

Thanks TFM! Wight Scene...was that the little boat at the front playing music? :D Yes, it could have been better, or worse, at one point the fog at Calshot meant that we couldn't see Fawley terminal, which was a worrying time!

On Monday, 2nd November this monster appeared on the River Mersey. She is the "Zhen Hua 23" and has brought the five very large container cranes from China for the new deep water container berths at Liverpool 2. Peel Ports hope to have the new berths up and running by January, 2016. There are twelve more of these monster cranes to come and be landed and installed as yet. As a retired deck officer I cannot help wondering how the GM (Metacentric height) is measured on such a ship, and even how it is possible to maintain stability in a seaway with such a load on deck. :-\ I know these ships are specially built to carry cranes like this but it must pay for them to transport from China to the UK like this. :o

Interesting to see "Caroline Essberger" in your pictures. She was here in Birkenhead only a few days ago. When I saw her she was moored in the Alfred Basin at the entrance to Birkenhead docks.
I always enjoy seeing your pictures, most interesting.

Ahh, by the looks of those crains, they're working on some new buildings on Kop van Zuid. Where the hell can you decently park your car when the parking lots are now taken down one by one... ???yes true, they just keep building at the Kop van Zuid
I mean, that large building on the left (first picture with Zuiderdam) used to be a parking lot, LOL.
Has anyone taken a picture where these large ships actually turn to go out? ;)The big vessels will reverse from the Wilhelminkade to the Waalhaven where they will turn, sometimes (like the Koningsdam last week) they are turning at the Waalhaven at their arrival and then reverse to the wilhelminakade.

Wow - I am impressed they actually rebuilt her from hull up! Most in that sort of condition would surely be an economic write-off!
