The "Specialist" was built in 1943 in Baltimore,Maryland by Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard Inc., with a triple expansion steam engine by General Machinery Corporation of Hamilton, Ohio, as the "Samwis". Many of these Liberty ships were named   "Sam------"  after Uncle Sam who still represents the USA. Because of this the ships were affectionately known as Samboats. The Company I worked for had ten of these Samboats when I first went to sea in 1951.

Today around 0930 (dutch time) the Dutch coastguard got a message from the SCH-3 Renzo that she got a fishing net in her propellor and was drifting to the coast fast, a few moments later the Renzo beached on the beach of Scheveninge when the KNRM arrived it got clear that the Renzo had hit the breakwater and had a hole in her hull, because of this the Renzo had a lot of water in her hull.
The first attempts to tow the Renzo back into the sea failed and the decision  was made to savage her on a another way, at around 1930 hour the Renzo was lifted by a big crane and was placed on a trailer.

Nobody was injured.

the Renzo and the breakwater that caused the leak in the hull.

The net that got struck in the propellor

On Monday, 2nd November this monster appeared on the River Mersey. She is the "Zhen Hua 23" and has brought the five very large container cranes from China for the new deep water container berths at Liverpool 2. Peel Ports hope to have the new berths up and running by January, 2016. There are twelve more of these monster cranes to come and be landed and installed as yet. As a retired deck officer I cannot help wondering how the GM (Metacentric height) is measured on such a ship, and even how it is possible to maintain stability in a seaway with such a load on deck. :-\ I know these ships are specially built to carry cranes like this but it must pay for them to transport from China to the UK like this. :o

I would be interested to know just how these huge cranes are loaded & unloaded. With the large tidal range here on the Mersey the procedure must be limited to certain states of the tide I think. My own theory is that there must be some kind of portable rails fitted between ship and shore and the crane then hauled on or off the deck that way. Anyone know just how it IS done? ???
Clanky, a whole lot of ballast and then some I think. :o

Hi Angus, I was curious about that too, and found this interesting video of a large crane loaded off the Zhen Hua 13..
It seems you are right in thinking that a rail system is used..  :)

Hi Salty,
Thank you very much for that link. It seems that, as you say, my guess was quite correct about a system of portable rails. Once off the ship, the actual running gear is fitted at right angles to the ones used for unloading, and the wheeled sections removed together with the massive mountings the crane was standing on. Wow, what a massive amount of work. The "Zhen Hua 23" has been here now since Monday and looking from the opposite side of the river it looks as if the first crane is now off the ship.
Many thanks again, I was trying to find something like that video but had failed dismally.

Kind regards,
Angus.

Hi Salty, Thanks for posting that link. I had been a little confused as to where the extension to Europoort was. Know I can see that is on reclaimed land to seaward of what is shown in the Ship Simulator games. We, in Liverpool are also building  two deepwater Container berths which will be able to handle the biggest container ships afloat. The berths are being built on reclaimed land and are called "Liverpool 2". Recently  five huge cranes arrived on "Zhen Hua 23" and are now all landed on the quay, but the ship is still here. I suppose there is a lot of work to do to clear her decks before going to sea.

Hi Michael,
Interesting to see "Caroline Essberger" in your pictures. She was here in Birkenhead only a few days ago. When I saw her she was moored in the Alfred Basin at the entrance to Birkenhead docks.
I always enjoy seeing your pictures, most interesting.

Kind regards,
Angus.
