which game area hope you in the future once more in shipsim measure to make?

I think he means to say - Which areas (harbors) would you like to see added to Ship Simulator in the future?[/b]

This topic has been discussed many, many times . . .  I will let this posting slide this time since the previous post was not brought over to the new forum. However - PLEASE research a topic before creating a new one. You may find the topic has been posted before.

What I really would like to see/play (or rather sail) is the route between Narvik (in northern Norway) and Rotterdam with Berge Stahl. The town of Narvik was built mainly for the shipping of swedish(!) ore, and a lot of  it ends up in Rotterdam.

Excuse my ignorance, but what kind of distance are we looking at?

Yer that seems quite a distance and will take alot of time.

I on the other hand think it might be a good idea for a Belfast to Scotland route which is served by the HSC Stana Voyager as it will take about 2 hours and will be very fun as the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean can be quite hard to do in a storm!! ;D

Excuse my ignorance, but what kind of distance are we looking at?

From Narvik to Rotterdam? A looong distance :)

But as I understand this, there will be missions in SS2008 that includes crossing oceans? If so, this "little" route would be a piece of cake, except for the possibility of heavy storms, fog, other ships, shallows, etc...

The route includes areas such as Vestfjorden (between Lofoten and the main land), and is known for hard storms in the winter time. And of course you have to cross at least two other areas also famous for it's hard weather: Stadtlandet (that's where you turn from southwest to south along the coast of Norway) and The Northern Sea.

BTW: Stadtlandet  also includes areas of shallows which contains a lot of shipwrecks.

All in all, a challenge to travel with sucess :)

Anything on the English Channel would be fine by me

e.g. Dover to Calais or Portsmouth to Cherburg/St Malo/Caen etc. VStep should bring out add on packs offering certain routes ans ships eg Western Channel V1.1 which would include scenery areas such as Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth and Le Harve, Cherburg and St Malo etc and also the ships you would find on these routes

That would be wicked!

Like some-one above purposed, add-on packs of certain areas would be great, including the vessels that are common for that area. I myself as an inland-skipper would like to see a bit more inland-canals and -rivers as well. Like Marc said, the Westerschelde would be very nice to have, because you can sail it with allmost any ship, because they're all common there!

On-topic: I would like to see the Unter-Weser, from outside Bremerhaven, including Wilhemshaven, all the way to Bremen! That would be a massive area, with 3 fairly big harbours and loads of possibillitys!

Hi,

I would agree with the Dover-Calais section of the Dover Straits... It is the busiest shipping channel after all. Could provide a lot of challenges getting past all the tanker/ cargo ships running across the straits.

This sounds like an interesting idea.

I have two questions:

1. At what speeds does it take two hours?

2. Will the game engine hold out? It often cuts out on me if I game close to 2 hours.

I hate the current game engine.

True, but it would need to be disabled in online play, otherwise it would influence other gamers environment, unless you programmed each gamer can set their own time rate - however, that means players who accelerate time can just "warp" away. I am not too into that.

Baltic approches - two suggestions:

Route TANGO (including the DW route) from bouy Nr. 1 NW of Skagen L/H S through, Kattegat, the Great Belt and Langelandsbælt then forking either E via Fehmahrn Belt to the Baltic (Rostock, Gdansk, Kaliningrad etc.) or W towards the Kieler Canal. This would be the typical route for larger vessels offering lots of anti collison work and a need for a keen eye on your echo sounder. (A radar might be a good idea as well)

For the more experienced master you might add the Western short cut through Little Belt and its opposite Eastern number through the Sound passing the bottleneck at Elsinore and further S across Copenhagen Roads and the very narrow passages E and W of Saltholm and finally exiting at the Falsterbo "roundabout". These are not for the feeble and inexperienced and only take vessels up to 1599 BRT. Especially the Little Belt is a particularly nasty piece of work, its treacherous currents has earned it the nickname "Midshipman killer".
The Sound is a narrow fairway with a heavy traffic load of vessels entering and leaving the Baltic, but also offers a lot of ferries crisscrossing and heaps of fishing ships and pleasure craft always in harms way.

The Baltic approaches in general take all sorts of craft from the 45t fishing vessel to huge RoRos and cruise liners and thus offer the possibility to create a wide range of missions. Depending on what type of vessel the total sailing time from bouy no. 1 to the fork will be 8 - 16 hour real time.

Unfortunately it has been a couple of years since I sailed those waters myself so I cannot give you the corresponding Admiralty chart numbers.

As an Aussie Ship Simmer, I would definitely like to see Sydney Harbour included somewhere in a future release of Ship Sim. It's a pretty busy place so it should make for some interesting missions. I suppose you could make cargo runs from up in Queensland down the coast to Sydney, Melbourne and across Bass Strait to Tasmania. Theres also the Barrier Reef and its various islands to ferry passengers and cargo around.
I also think you would need to include a 'yaw' option like they have in Flight Sim. The open ocean missions are going to take forever otherwise.

I agree with Newcastle but the one in the UK , It has everything from huge tankers to the patrol boats on the North Shields Fish Quay and the DFDS Ferry Terminal and they are building a new port for the QE2 to dock in September! :D

One of the main docks in Souhampton has been called QE2 dock for years, but that doesn't actually mean that only QE2 docks there...

Actually, their sister company Carnival/P&O use it as well.

And in Newcastle if you were coming in on a big cargo ship a helicopter could land on your ship to drop off the pilot (we usually use helicopters instead of pilot vessels) and also there are HUGE ship queues numbering up to 60+ so you could be a re-fueling vessel and take fuel out to waiting ships!

I really would like to see the port of Antwerp.

It is the 3rd biggest port in Europe and it has the biggest ship lock in the world (the Berendrechtsluis).

It allso has a lot of inland possibillyties. The Schelde-rijn Channel connects the port of Antwerp with Rotterdam. So, it allso will be good for open sea missions (Rotterdam-Antwerp)

And, it would be a great adition for the North sea (it is the most central port of the North sea).

But, the major reasen why I like the port of Antwerp is biceaus I only live 1km away from the port.

Hey Sydney Harbour to Newcastle will be the best i reckon, as Sydney is well known and Newcastle Harbour (2 hours north from Sydney) is well known for supplying coal and that when you enter the harbour it's kind of narrow to get in, so theres a challenge. I can supply you some pics if you would like. I'm from Newcastle, Australia and i think it will be great for once if sydney got credit from a game  ;D

cheers,

Greetings,
I would like to see more harbours also, however maybe afther the release of the 2008 version,it would be more better to extend the harbours that we have, untill a reasonal point. Before we gonna start on more harbours.
By example,to extend the part from "Hoek van Holland" a couple of miles more into the Northsea.
Also a bit more to the inland, from sector "Botlek" untill the "Moerdijkbridge".
These are just idea's,but maybe a good way,to get more from the inland also.So this way we can sail a bit further than what is possible now,and also the game gets more bigger area's to sail in.
I'm not against more harbours, but that can come in time.

Marc

Hey all

I would like to see Copenhagen as a big cruise ship port and aarhus as the biggest container port in Denmark as the Emma maersk has been there 2 or 3 times since she was build, and as another on here says the Oersund region Passing Elsinor and Ven and further down passing the Oersunds Brigde/and the tunnels and the the opening into the baltic sea, have just for a few weeks sailed there and it was very challenging he said to me Captain on The big wessel Navigator of the seas..

I would like to see the Puget Sound area of Washington State, including the ports of Victoria and Vancouver.  This would give several, connected ports among which to move ships, and do all the activities associated with these busy ports.

Thanks for all that you are doing to make this available to those of us who don't have the time, or opportunity, to experience this career path.

Yes I think Stockholm is a very good Idea. I was there last year, I think its a challange to find your place if you come from the open sea. There are really a lot of islands. And in Stockholm still working steamboats (I think for tourists). And its a beautyful city scenery.

Why not the most trafficated sound in the world, with one shipmovement every 5 min the year around. To drive one of the ferrys between Helsingborg-Helsingor in the HH-sound Denmark - Sweden would be nice!

This sounds like an interesting idea.

I have two questions:

1. At what speeds does it take two hours?

2. Will the game engine hold out? It often cuts out on me if I game close to 2 hours.

I hate the current game engine.

Around 18 knots.
And I don't think so.
 ;)

Glad you liked the scotland to belfast idea. :D

I'd like to see......

1.Dover-Calais/Dunkerque/Le Harve etc North eastern french coast up to and inc Antwerp including locks and canals etc as one sailing area with associated vessels.

2.Hong Kong/Singapore think of the amount of shipping and navigation hazzards around there, not to mention piracy and very small islands to make navigation difficult.

3.Not really a harbour (but it has it's biggest effect in them) let's see some tides and currents.

One of the best, in my opinion, would be Venice. This would cover everything, from the small, busy canals (and fantastic buildings) to the more open waters of the lagoon and from there out to sea.

Imagine using the speedboat for James Bond type fast chases through the canals - now that would be a tough mission!

The Firth of Clyde estuary would also be a good area to model, in a small area we have great scenery including high mountainous islands, sandy bays, cities and towns.

There are many large and small ports, 12 ferry routes+ a seacat route to Ireland, a container terminal , graving docks, shipyards, victorian style piers, an ore terminal and a large harbour with estuarial and deep sea tugs, marinas and even a nuclear submarine base.

All of these things in a small area definitely make the Clyde a good choice for shipsim.

My thoughts entirely..Caen = Ouistreham..perhaps Dieppe coastline..

Pireaus Port in Greece would be fine. Too many facilities such as Shipyards, Container, Ro-Ro, Cement, Passenger terminals, Oil refinaries, Naval bases, Natural gas facility, Ferry lines, Yacht Marinas, Traffic Separation Scheme, Strait, Anchorage everything within a 20 to 30 miles area. Approximate position at Google Earth:"Salamis" lat=37.961257, lon=23.506078. You can take a look at the attached pictures(if you can't see them, right click and save target as, or goto   http://rapidshare.com/users/7BR694 (http://rapidshare.com/users/7BR694) to see them and many more). I would like to see the whole coastline of europe, but, it would be very very undetailed, so it won't take very much time to build it, and then put the very detailed harbours in it. This way a long distance route like Hamburg-Rotterdam is possible. Together with a simulation rate button (like you can change it in flightsim for example) would be really cool...maybe I'm asking to much, forgive me  ;D

Cheers,

Obviously a lot of Norwegians have bought this game, the developers should keep this in mind if they plan to release new ports ;)

My dream would be one or several Norwegian ports, like the western coast as you mention. They would be excellent in missions involving the oil rig for example. Or simply moving around with a local ferry.

The Norway coast is breathtaking, so I would like to see parts of it like:

- Trondheim

- The Northcape on Mageroya Island

- Oslo with fjord

- Bodo --> Lofoten (Westfjord) --> Raftsund

And:
Svalbard (for journeys with cruise ships)
Antarctica (for touristjourneys around icebergs and the beautiful Antarctica coast)

I would like to see the Belfast to Stranraer route made for the game. It is a nice hour and a half journey. The STena HSS Voyager takes that route. That is why I think that this route should be created, so that you can use the HSS Voyager.

Also, Rosslare(Ireland)should be created because it takes the Stena Lynx 3 which sails to Fishguard. It also takes the Stena Caledonian I think.

Which areas (harbours) would you like to see added to Ship Simulator in the future?

Parts of the Mississippi River, including at least one Lock and Dam structure (with only a 600' lock)   So something like Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota would be great.   Obviously, we'd need a River Tow (push boat) and barges for a river scenairo to work.

You know all of these ports won't actually be put into the game you know? Ports takes a VERY long time to design and build and we're just making a thread rediculously long for no reason.

Sorry to sound like a nag but deep down we all know 99.8% of these will not make it into the game because of the time it takes to make them.

Of course everyone would like to have their own living hood in the game, but that can't be possible.

My opinion is that Hamburg and Rotterdam are very lookalike, but phi phi island is something totally different. The more differents environments for navigation the better.

There will not be any new areas in the near future (this year) as they are busy with developing the multiplayer update, the 2006 add-on for 2008 and the vessel subscription service.

Hello Ben1337,
Where is the fun in watching anything at 16X anyway?

Look, get used to reality. Vstep isn't going to do the whole planet unless there is a good chance of selling enough copies to make it worthwhile.

The arguemen about whether there should be a SDK has been done to the death. Please, for the sake of sanity- move on.

Stu
Indeed, the question of a development kit needed to integrate new environments and/or ships has already been heavily discussed...  :-[ and is still ongoing?

I must confess ...I dont want to read 9 pages to write down my wishes so anyone else might have written before!
I´d like to have the Helsinki harbour and maybe something like a swamp (+the boats you need for driving through a swamp) or a kind of desert waterway like you find in Australia (+crocodiles!!!!LOL)
And some inland water navigation!!

Cheers Jonny

Anything on the English Channel would be fine by me

e.g. Dover to Calais or Portsmouth to Cherburg/St Malo/Caen etc. VStep should bring out add on packs offering certain routes ans ships eg Western Channel V1.1 which would include scenery areas such as Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth and Le Harve, Cherburg and St Malo etc and also the ships you would find on these routes

That would be wicked!

Calais - Dover I was also thinking about with the Pride of Rotterdam  ;)

I think a scenery called “Rhodes(Gre) to Marmaris(Tur)” would be wonderful including beautiful Symi island and the gulf of Hisaronu. That would include several marinas, small islands and channels + open sea in a 30x30 nautical miles area. In real life also it is a favorited area for cruisers and sailors.

Helsinki. :)
This port is challenging having the  Kustaanmiekka  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kustaanmiekka) (wikipedia-link. look at the Mariella-picture).
That is one  narrow  (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=60.145265,25.000248&spn=0.061954,0.160675&t=k&z=13&om=1) passage (google maps).

All the ships must go throught that at this moment, but new harbour for containers and tankers are going to be opened in a year, which is not a surprise. :D
The main port for cruiseships is also very tight place.

Singapore - probably the heaviest traffic in the starights.
Tokyo Bay - must see.

Vermaas is Post Panamax, so you will have to wait until at least 2012, or later, before you can take her through.
There are some formidable difficulties in making working locks in the present development environment.

I think that a trip to Stockholm(SWEDEN)wold be nice. There is several big(??)passengerships travelling betwin Stockholm-Ã…land/Helsingfors(Helsinki)/Ã…bo(Turku).
There are a lots of passengerships(small)traveling in Stockholms archipelago. A big company is "Waxholmsbolaget". If you live on an island, the only way out, is by "Waxholmsbolaget". There is about 20000 islands in Stockholm archipelago. And not always easy to navigate.
And its the paradise in the summertime(like so many other islands).

Hi,
A complete simulation of the ferry service between the port of Dover and Calais would be intresting as this is the worlds busiest shipping route of the world. (Dover Strait).
Also the ports of Dunkerque Zeebrugge and Ostend would be a nice add-on.
The ferry compagnies on the Dover service are P&O, Norfolkline and Seafrance.
It would also more realistic with lightbuoys, harbourlights and -ships.

All these stuff are perhaps ideas for an Add-on for shipsim 2008, or a next release of Shipsim.

succes,

Henk.

I must agree with the Panama Canal suggestions.  Could create many interesting missions there.

Or where I am - Straight of Juan de Fuca, which is between Vancouver Island and Seattle.  Lots of islands, so lots of good missions could be made here too.

Fort Lauderdale would always be fun to a mega-yacht lover like myself too, come to think of it.   My passion is 50' to 150' yachts, so this one's a natural for me.

Welcome to the forum, VanIsle,
I’m certainly with you when it comes to the Straight. I’d like to see BC Ferries in the sim, but doing the whole thing would be a massive job. It’s, after all, one of the largest systems on the planet.
Just the main service from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay and to Nanaimo would be a good start.
It would be nice to show folks that there are SuperFerries in this end of the world—though not quite as big as PoR.

I’d also like to see the Washington Ferries route from Anacortes through the San Juan Islands. Coming from Oregon, and visiting a friend in Monroe, that’s the route I most often take to Victoria and surrounding attractions.

It's probably too much to even dream about, but I would like to see a world similar to Microsoft's "Flight Simulator". With tools to build your own ships, harbours, and scenerys. Online weather updating so you could use realtime weather, and have the ability to sail any ship to any harbour in the world. The original game would have a few generic ships so copywrite wouldn't be an issue, the fans could make there own ships using programs like 3Dmax or Gmax and use textures they choose.
Sailing a huge passenger liner from Naples to Los Angeles, real time, real weather, with a passenger program like FSPassenger would be the ultimate ship simulator!

Hi cjordan:
The subject has been discussed at length.
To add the ability to do a meaningful long sea voyage would involve a massive development effort on the part of VSTEP. For one thing it would require a spherical environment instead of the 10 nm square flat environments currently used. Also, to support the activities on the bridge during a sea transit requires navigational plotting facilities, improved RADAR simulation, moving weather systems along with access to weather reports, and many other features that are not implemented in the present sim.
Most of those who ask for this also want an autopilot and/or 16X time acceleration so that they don’t actually have to endure the trip.
Before they are willing to commit the resources to such a program, I think VSTEP would need to be convinced that a significant number of customers would actually make use of those features.
A test—designed for that purpose—has shown that the number of users who would complete a long sea transit mission, even one lasting less than five hours, is 1 in 77 downloads. The number showing no interest at all is much higher.
I think this is a dead issue, at least for the foreseeable future.
Regards
Marty

I would like to see Singapore, but mainly I preffer the santos port it´s the biggerst port in south america the traffic is quite big as rotterdam but no inland vessel´s. This port is supplyed but the city of sao paulo where´s the biggerst industrial city of the South America is located. there 45% of the brazilian exportations depart from santos.
The port of Santos is located at the margim of the Santos River, where are located ship yards, immigrant bridge, Santos brazil Conteiner terminal at the rigth side of the river, T37 libra´s Container Terminal and Santos Tecon Conteiner Terminal at the left side, plywin general cargoes terminal, brasreefer and Sadia reefers Terminals and 4 ferry services along the river and just besides to santos at the north part at the sea side are the Sao sebastião city with ilhabella island where the Biggerst Petrobras Pretolium terminal is located.
i can´t forghet the Environment aroun of the santos river and at the coast line between santos and São sebastião with mountains covered of virgin forest and amazing beachs around.

Well how about the Ports of Dover and Calais with an English channel section is the middle. So those people who can't manage a 90 minute crossing don't have to do one.

I would suggest strongly that Vstep consider Dover and Calais as these appear to be the most requested ports that appear constantly on this forum.

Norway Norway Norway!!! ;D ;D ;D
The game does already have a part of North Sea added. Think of all the oil platform and all the PSV/AHTS missions that can be made. Think about the fjords with the awesome nature and Lofoten in the north that just is a spectacular view. And at least all the freaking storms and sea conditions at the edge of Stadt where Hurtigruten have huge troubles sometimes just to get trough.
And then you have the beautiful south coast where you see the flat part of Norway. There are many big ports in this country, like the ports in Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen, Ã…lesund, Tronheim...you name it.
I think that all this can be sponsed by the Norwegian Government if VSTEP ask them for it ;D :D

I agree gunwharf i think there should be the port CHERBOURG they should also make a Brittany Ferries ship so peeps can do the ferrie crossing PORTSMOTH to CHERBOURG. you get to cross the channel which will be fun because stormy.

see yha guys     ;)

would need to dredge the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour as at the moment you run aground in anything larger then a RIB!

I doubt that will happen as I expect VSTEP's deal with Red Funnel will have it so that they are the only car ferry & fast ferry operator accross the solent in SS2008.

Poole Harbour nice place :)

i agree Poole Harbour is a lovely place!   Learnt to sail there as i grew up over looking it, and later on i took several ships in and out of the harbour!

Though as a good place for the game would be the Dover Straights.  Several ferry routes crossing and the TSS lanes going through it!   Lots of hard work for sailors to do!

Although Barcelona is one of the most beautiful harbors and cities in Spain, I would also like to see Palos de la Frontera; historically speaking it is arguably the most famous port in Spain.
It was from there that the Pinzon brothers began the first European voyage to the Americas. It was the birthplace of my namesake Martin Alonso Pinzon—Master of the Pinta.

I saw it had already be mentionned, but I add a vote for some zones of Norway ... a big port, like Bergen, with one or two fjord ...

That would be a very nice zone for small ferrys (like red eagle), and maybe a new dynamic ship with one of the new Hurtigrute ?

Hong Kong would be a good place, as Hong Kong Victoria harbour is one of the world busiest port. Beside cargo ship, a lot of passenger ship visiting here every year.

I suggest to build a scenery of Hong Kong, Macau (oriental Vegas) and Pearl Delta area.

A small area with a lot of traffic and a place for ferry - lovers is Helsingoer (Denmark) and Helsingborg (Sweden). Today, there is 3 ferryroutes between these to cities. The crossing takes only 20 min and the scenery is small, just 5 x 10 km. Almost every traffic between Europe and Scandivia goes via that route and it is a close water from the North Sea to the Baltic. I have worked in the Danish Navy and belive me, a foggy day in the strait is big working.

I would like to see some routes with locks, e.g. the Rhone Rover in France or the Panama Canal. If the Rhone, then I would also like to see some of the 110 m cruise boats specially built for this environment, like the River Royale, e.g. (Uniworld built in Arnhem, NL). If the Panama, then we need a Panamax container carrier, no doubt!!

Helsinki. :)
This port is challenging having the  Kustaanmiekka  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kustaanmiekka) (wikipedia-link. look at the Mariella-picture).
That is one  narrow  (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=60.145265,25.000248&spn=0.061954,0.160675&t=k&z=13&om=1) passage (google maps).

All the ships must go through that at this moment, but new harbour for containers and tankers are going to be opened in a year, which is not a surprise. :D
The main port for cruiseships is also very tight place.
Here is more better picture (again, googlemaps). Marseille is very popular in MP being so compact, this shows you how utterly compact Port of Helsinki (http://www.portofhelsinki.fi/english/) is:

Well I would enjoy numerous different enviroments. Now What I would like is the same thing that you can do in Flight Sim just fly around the world openingly, I guess THis will take some Time to create as obviously it would take a hell of a lot longer to do this in a ship. There will obviously be some obstacles in the way the shere size of the map would probably take a lot of time to load up. However it would be nice if VSTEP could release different enviroments in different sizes. For example:

South England
North England
Scotland
Wales
Ireland
Northen Europe
Asia
etc etc you get the picture (I hope)

If VSTEP was to release these in seperate packs then everyone could buy what area they would like to play in. It would make Ship sim A truly brilliant Simulator not that it is already.

I'm all for realism as its the way forward, so to be honest any enviroment with real life scenary is welcomed on my ship sim

Totally agree with supafly!!!

Vstep may not have the resources that Microsoft do but i think they should focus on releasing the next version of SS not with more ports but with ports that you can sail between.  Why not just have just a europe "sail around area"  so that you can sail from hamburg to southampton and round to Rotterdamn without a mission editor and it reloading.  at least then only with Europe you have limited the area and reduced the workload then releasing add ons for N. America... Asia and Oceania etc.  However i do think that saying a "flight sim" start here and fly feature will not be available for some time...  but then i dont work for Vstep so i cant tell ya!

As far as individual ports... Hong Kong sounds good with the tricky currents and the largest container terminal in the world and i fancy somewhere like Syndey Australia or Fort laurderdale Florida... a notible non-european port just for a little chage in scenery.
Title: Re: Which game areas (harbours) would you like to see in the future?
Post by: nhseacaptain on March 20, 2008, 23:31:09
Very true!  Having a few reasonably close ports to sail between, that would also work for the multiplayer environment, would be great.  One of the problems we have here on this side of the pond though is the great distance between ports of any significnace.  Just look at Boston and New York.  These are certainly two of the largest ports in the North East U.S., but to sail between them takes at least 20-hours at a reasonalby realistic cruising speed.  That does not take into account docking and undocking iterations.  As for me I would dearly love to be able to sail between two ports online.  No matter where they were.  ::)

Regards,

Kevin

How about an area of the Greek Islands.
The Greeks split their islands comveniently into groups eg Ionic, Cyclades, Sporades, Dodecanese etc.   Another option could be just to do Crete as there are numerous bays and harbours all around it.
With the ships we have at the moment the PoR could do the main ferry routes and the Red Jet or Hovercaft could run the Flying Dolphin routes but some island ferry size passenger ships would be good(We seem to be either very large or very small)

1. Extend Padstow to at least Port Isaac so we can sail between ports.
2. Milford Haven (S.Wales) - a huge sea inlet with many docks and a deepwater oil terminal.

Vancouver.   The largest port in Canada and one of the largest in the world - with a great harbour layout and mooring basin and much more.

Of course I have absolutely no bias in stating the above.   ;)

I think Southampton to Freemantle Route maybe, it is quite long though the MV Funchal does this route with ports of call at: Lisbon, Messina, Piraeus, Santorini, Rhodes, Limassol, Port Said, Sharm-El-Sheik, Aqaba, Port Victoria, Praslin Is., Port Louis. alot of ports but i would like mainly Fremantle and the MV Funchal i've been on it at new years very nice

Living down here anyway, I'd really like to see the approaches to, the river at Milford Haven (there are a few oil terminals / marinas are there).

However, what would also be great would be the upper reaches of the Bristol Channel, including the likes of Cardiff, Newport, and the docks around Bristol as well - navigating the Severn would be the challenge there with the larger ships :)

I would like to see that the scenery of the Northsea would have the "Eurogeul". This is a man build traffic lane for bulkcarriers and other big vessels that are draft restricted and are inbound for Rotterdam. The "Eurogeul" is 56 km long and has a depth of 23 meters. Big bulkcarriers like the Berge Stahl have to take this route. It would be nice to navigate a big bulkcarrier through this lane.

It would be good to have the whole of the isle of wight in so that you could go out past the needles.

Reading different advertisements and messages from Vstep for work placement I find out that the next Ship Simulation will be Ship Simulator 2010. Vstep planned a lot of new features including underwater worlds and lifeforms as (killer) whales, sharks, dolphins, penguins and birds.

To allow the creation of unlimited environments Vstep planned a scenery creation tool for the Ship Simulator game. This will concede the gamers to create their own harbours and waters (based on sea maps) and share their creations with the rest of the Ship Simulation community.

Sorry Dave, Goole is in East Yorkshire  :) but I do agree it would be good to have the Humber in the game, only problem is only the tugs and pleasure boats would be able to sail there - even "Agile Solution" is too big for Goole.

I think the Swedish coast can be nice or the sea between Norway, Denmark and Sweden (just to be fair against my neighbors so I don't step on someones feet here..) :) Then the excellent suggesters of Color Line vessels have more valid salt to digg up when they suggest vessels like Color Fantasy, Magic.. or all the ferries that travels in this area (Scanlines etc). Personally it will hopefully give the small community of Norwegian Ship Simulator users a growth in the player mass since plenty of us still stick to the "old fashion" Virtual Sailor game.

Simple summary: A Scandinavian environment! (for the sake of us in the North) ;) :P

That's a good choice... but I doubt it would happen unless they could be pursuaded to put military ships in it.

As for yachts... I'm sorry, but if they're too stupid to see a great big warship coming up on them, then it gets their dna out of the gene pool of society... qed  ;)

I would like to see the following in either on a online downloadable patch or a new expansion pack.

1. Scotland / Glasgow's River Clyde / Scotland's West Coast
2. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
3. Norway / Sweden / Bergen
4. Stranrear, Scotland - Belfast, Northern Ireland

5. At some point I would like every single port and harbour that is posible in the world.
6. Who can not forget Dover and Hull harbours/ports.

Please note that I would not like the idea of naval base locations on Shipsim 2008.

Why is not possible to make the game like MS Flight Simulator? Explorable world seas -i think it's gonnabe easier than the landscape of the world in a flight sim-, moddable ships, user made addons (ships, harbors) etc...

Anyway some Mediterranean ports, Trieste for example?

Why is not possible to make the game like MS Flight Simulator?

Because MS Flight Simulator wasn't made within 2 years. Beside of that VSTEP would need a lot of resources and world data to make such stuff (because I don't think that Microsoft would give them the game engine of MS Flight Simulator for free..). Besides of this - it's extremely complicated to make a round Earth in the game. In Ship Simulator it all rest on a planar surface.

The game development world is much harder than you know ;)

To be honest, the river Severn in south Wales.
provide the ports of Barry, Penarth marina and the cardiff bay area including the port.
All with working locks.

Would be ace.

Also i do agree with other, why not allow user editable features like create your own ships/ports would make the game bigger than it is and the good user creations could be included in the next versions.
makes good sence for all including vstep.

If I could choose:
1. Sydney - because I have been there on a frequent service from the United States via New Zeeland...
2. Öresund area - from the Baltic Sea up to Kullen with Copenhagen, Malmö, Landskrona, Helsingör, Helsingborg...
3. Stockholm - with access to the Baltic Sea...

Well, I think I couldn't choose.. ::)

i think i whoud chose nr. 2 the øresund or in SWE : öresund becurse there is many ferrys and transport ships in that route and in nr 3 stockhold there is only the main lan and it leadt out to the sea so nr 2 it whoud be nice cpoenhagen harbor is a verynice harbor with nyhavn and so on :D and there is about 7 islands in aria nr. 2 so NR 2 YEAAAAAAAR

How about BC Ferries from Tsawwassen to Nanaimo?
It’s a lot of effort to make the various environments, but I’d like to see the straits of Juan de Fuca / Georgia, including Victoria & Anacortes. One could then run a real ferry business!

Yes

and for those places, we need their respective tenders: "SS Nomadic" for Cherbourg, and "America" and "Ireland" for Queenstown ;D

The Nomadic is still around :o

If memory serves, it's currently in Belfast.

We should also have the areas she was supposed to go on her return voyage, like Plymouth Sound, a painting of which she had in her 1st class smoking room, called "Plymouth Harbor", if I remember correctly.

Also maybe Tasmaina And The Bass Strait (Extremely dangerous waters) might be kool for huge rogue waves.

Gday Mate.

How good would it be to sail the Sydney to Hobart. Considering there isnt much to do on Boxing day we could race them realtime.  ::)

Or even sail the Whitsundays or take the old Fairstar on a cruise to Noumea, Fiji, Solomon Islands etc.. and throught Boula Havari Passage (Spelling is wrong i know) and pass by Armadee Island (Lighthouse on the reef near Noumea) and then pull up at Norfolk Island Sail down to the North Island of NZ over to Port Melbourne then up the East coast and then sail in through Sydney Heads under the bridge and park it at the old casino.

Maybe someone out there will work on Australia/Pacific Islands.

One Day.

Post by: mvsmith on August 19, 2008, 13:32:29
Gday denmo71,

Yes, Bass Strait is an interesting place, but it won’t be as much fun until the new sea model is available in Ship Simulator 2009.

In the present sea model, wave height is limited to 4 meters for two reasons: The model is not able to produce realistic waves much higher than that, and the ship dynamics can’t handle higher waves and produce realistic ship reactions.

More important for the Sydney-Hobart, wind does not act directly on ships, so sailing vessels have no realistic power. That, along with the need for a more complex set of user controls, is why there are no player sailing yachts in the present simulator.

Hopefully, 2009 may see a much better sea model, along with a chart table and a set of tools.
Regards,
Marty

Norfolk Virginia. Ive been there and they have the biggest natural harbor Ive ever seen. From what ive seen they have A coal pier, four container terminals that are huge (mearsk has a terminal there that we recently rode by and there was a container ship bigger than the vermass there loading) From what Im to understand they also have some of the biggest container crains in the world. The only downfall to Norfolk is they have The biggest naval base in the world, and also a naval museam (which Ive been to) that has a Iowa class battle ship. And being that this is on a river the smaller ships can go all the way up to richmond Va. Finaly they have lots of drydock companys, There is even one that built one of the counteys aircraft carriers in a city called NewPort News

Has anyone thought of Liverpool? Has anyone suggested this before? South Hampton is one of the environments already built into Ship Simulator - but what about England's other big and world famous port? LIVERPOOL, with the river Mersey and and its approach channel from Liverpool bay has so much to offer in the way of cruising, towing, docking and anchoring. All types of vessels can be accomodated here. I've lived here all my life, so, of course, I'm biased. But, it is a world famous port and I'm amazed that no-one has considered this before.

eyrebrush, Nice photo of HMS "Ark Royal" at the new cruise liner terminal. I have one very similar, also "Queen Elizabeth 2" on the new berth. Like you, as a Liverpudlian born and bred and having sailed for many years with a famous old LIverpool Company, I would very much like to see my home port in the simulator. It could be arranged that it was a high spring tide and all the lock gates were open to avoid the problem of locking in and out of the docks. Oh, by the way, it has been suggested before by a number of us Scousers.

Very simply, not in any numerical order, these areas/harbours:

1. Area of Puget Sound, bounded by harbours of Vancouver, BC - Victoria, BC - Seattle/Tacoma, USA.
2. The Aegean Sea area, bounded by harbours of Piraeus, Greece - Crete - Izmir, Turkey.
3. The Ariatic Sea area, bounded by harbours of Trieste, Italy - Split or Dubrovnik in the Balkans - Taranto, Italy.
4. The south coast of Japan, from Tokyo/Yokohama to Nagoya.
5. The Strait of Malacca, from Singapore to Kelang, Malaysia
6. The Seto Aikai Sea, from Beppu on Kyushu Island to Osaka, but including all of Shikoku Island so you have a choice of an inside or an outside route.
7. Hong Kong Harbour, with islands.
8. Sydney or Melbourne Harbours.
9. both New Zealand Islands.
10. Casablanca, Morocco to Algiers, Algeria - including the Rock of Gibraltar and Cadiz, Spain.
11. Any of the islands in the Caribbean Sea.
12. Perhaps Rio de Janiero. Some South American ports.

That's all I want. Later, I may want more....  ;D

Update: CANADA! Don't forget our friends Bob and Doug!

I would really like to see the port of Miami. That is a great ferry passage way and and ideal cruise ship port ;). It also collects cargo from ships. But it is mainly a cruise ship terminal.

How about the St. Lawrence Seaway from the 1000 islands region of northern New York State to Montreal, Canada? It's approx. 1-4 miles wide (varies) and 187 miles long. It provides the opportunity to introduce locks and power generation dams to Ship Sim. It is also is a very challenging area to navigate as it has many navigation obstacles as well as high recreational traffic.

The Port of Vancouver Canada is the largest port in Canada and I believe the second largest on the west coast of North America. The Port of Vancouver includes the area in and around . . . the Strait of Georgia, Burrard Inlet and the Fraser River. If the map were to be enlarged the area could also include the nearby Gulf Islands Archipelago and Vancouver Island as well as the San Jaun Archipelago and Puget Sound to the south in the United States. The Port of Vancouver receives tankers, cargo ships, freighters and cruise ships from all around the world and is also a major hub for Seaspan and BC Ferries.

     Hi all,

I’d Love to see Piraeus, Santorini (Thira) (though small), Istanbul and Alexandria – or even Port Said.

There are of course hundreds of others – but most of those I’d name would be in the Aegean and I suppose too small to be of interest to VSTEP or perhaps other users of SS …

It would be Wonderful to have Very Large ‘mid-Atlantic’ and ‘Mediterranean’ water ‘environments’ however – and great to see Gibraltar & be able to pass through the straights to have a transit-point between the Med and the Atlantic.

  Best regards,
  Chrystine

(As would Venice, or even Malta).  :)

Any new ports would be nice :)

But, I think the Port Of Fleetwood is a nice interesting place, after all, I live right next door :D

What I think would be good about it in ship simulator is the fact that, the channel is VERY deep, and will take ferries (e.g. Stena Pioneer, Stena Leader, and other ships that come now and again) also, the marina is further up, where all the yachts, cruisers are etc. then there's a bridge which can be raised to let the Trawlers through to the smaller harbour where all the trawlers are based, then all the building's are around there that sort out and sell the fish etc.

I can also take lots of picture's if any of you are interested ;D

Jack.

and i've got a hangover.. so not really sure if i counted correct..

Lets hope Vstep surprises one of you lot completely with a new country as there's lots to choose from:

How about we stop arguing for this weekend and just populate an online server for a change?

The tidal races around Alderney would be fun to navigate. But we need todes and currents in SS for that!

Jersey would be fun also, with the sills in the marinas, but again, that would need to be added to SS for it to show up.

I think the great lakes and thier ports would be cool especially with all the lock systems.
Possibly some eastern asian ports as well, but i don't really know of any in peticular.
I liked the port of sydney idea as well.
And finally I have to support Port of vancouver being it is home.
Unfortunately I think the gulf islands would loose something without tides they would still be interesting.
Vancouver does have a pretty diversified marine industry.
BC ferries,cruises
Port of Vancouver, Delta port, surrey-fraser port ( up the fraser river a ways)
many different bridges including swing and lift
Unrelated to the ports question I would really like to see some west coast towboating like towing and landing barges that would really add a new element to ship sim. Maybe log towing as well but it's a little slow.

For anyone not familiar with the background to Marty's joke, US Patent number 07106781 refers to a discrete multitone stacked-carrier spread spectrum communication method. To quadruple the laughs, it is also the working paper number for a meta-analysis of Oligopoly. This being among the first topics in the experimental economics.

Marty, I thought was hilarious! Thanks.

Hi Terry/Marty,
For the rest of us with only half a brain, I think that refers to broadband?

To quadruple the laughs, it is also the working paper number for a meta-analysis of Oligopoly. This being among the first topics in the experimental economics.

Oligopoly means being a seller in a sellers market, (not less than 3 competitors but not much more). You couldn't be referring to England's attempt to monopolise the tea market could you?  :o And you being an Brit you should hang your head in shame.  ;D

Valencia. It’s a Beautiful city. There are modern and singular buildings “Cuidad de las Artes y las ciencias” There is the America´s Cup Port. There are accurate (LIDAR) digital terrain models of the city and vicinities. The offshore has heavy traffic between Gibraltar Strait and North African Cities and Barcelona, Marseille, Palma

As Valecia´s Port Authorities says:

Valencia port is the first and last stopover port for the major deep sea maritime services using regular lines in the Western Mediterranean, which provides the following advantages:

The closest trading port to the Suez-Gibraltar axis, route of the main deep sea shipping lines.
Superior facilities for the concentration and distribution of traffic in the Western Mediterranean.
In addition, our enviable position on the Iberian Peninsula makes us a natural port for deep sea goods traffic, by providing: Shorter land transport times. Extensive possibilities for the redistribution of goods originating on or destined for the Peninsula.

What about all the main harbors in Hawaii (Honolulu,O'ahu; Nawiliwili, Kauai; Kahului, Maui; Kawaihae and Hilo, Hawaii (Big Island);Kaumalapau, Lanai; Kaunakakai, Molokai; Pearl Harbor, O'ahu)?  Hawaii is connected mainly by sea and requires shipping for almost all goods.  Ships bring in goods from the mainland and they are later transported intrastate via tug and barge.  How about a working tow winch (heave in/pay out) on a line haul tug too??  Just some thoughts about the area that I live/work in....

Hello! I'm the one - a little while back - who advocated Liverpool and all the plentiful environs of the river Mersey, with it's approaches from the Irish sea, its amenities for all kinds of vessels, ferries across the river - and further afield across the Irish sea to the Isle of Mann and Ireland, Cruise ships, cargo vessels, tankers, fishing boats, tugs and barges, pilot and rescue vessels as well as pleasure craft. There could be many extensions to all the docks there on both sides of the river - not to mention the Manchester ship canal with it's oil refinery terminals etc.

Of course, I'm biased, LOL, having been brought up here and lived here all my life! However, having just spent nearly two hours wading through all 23 pages of suggestions so far, I realise that all have their own merits. Of course, I WOULD like to see more environments - and vessels - on offer, as we all do. One can grow stale and bored with the same things all the time, most particularly with the environments with their limited number of starting points. What I would REALLY recommend to VStep is to incorporate into all future - and existing environs the CHOICE of having CONTINUALLY VARYING weather conditions - both on free sailing and on missions. This, I think (certainly for me) would greatly extend a more lasting enthusiasm for their ship simulation. It would be much more of a challenge, and of much more interest if one could start a sailing with conditions that are given at random - and with conditions that change, gradually, at random! This would include SAVED missions!

What do you think about it guys?

Maybe... I have thought up another one as well... Dover - Calais on the same environment...*

You mean if we ask for Dover-Calais on the Same Environment, Someone may listen...

Sounds like a Dover-Calais Environment Plan...

I didn't know Terry played with Liquid Nitrogen...

But Dover-Calais Environment I think Newhaven may be an interesting port too.

It is very challenging (Boats end up on Sandbanks) And is based on a river, with a swing bridge

A fascinating place for anyone who's not been there. It would be better with a few historical warships (which has been discussed elsewhere)- Malta was a big convoy destination in WW2

The Anacortes, Washington to Sidney, British Columbia route is operated by Washington State Ferries, making it an international company, whereas its larger cousin, BC Ferries is provincial.
Together, they make the Puget Sound/Strait of Georgia waterway the busiest ferry area in the world, and possibly the most scenic.

Hello!

I wolud like to see some Mediteran countrys!

Like: Italia, Malta, Greek, Coratia...

But most i wolud like to see Croatia - Rovinj!!
It's a normal size town but it's wery nice and it cool to drive the sips around the Rovinj so the place is wonderfoll and it's great for ships!

Pictures: Rovinj town: [img=http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/5618/rovinj.th.jpg] (http://img29.imageshack.us/i/rovinj.jpg/)

I'l give more photos later...

And it's realy easy to create this place because it's not big!
It's realy nice destination for ships and many yachts! Every yera in Rovinj comes a lot of world largest yachts and cruisers...

Good bye!

What about Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad & Tobago on the island of Trinidad. The one thing about this city is that it lies in a shelter position thanks to the Northern Range hills and is one of the favored position for western hemisphere shipping routes. Most trades go from this city to North America, South America and the Caribbean.

Plymouth.

It's got tons of historical merit (Drake, Pilgrim fathers, e.t.c.)
you've got Devonport Dockyard, the River Plym and drakes island, so it looks nice...

Plus there's the F1 powerboats!

Oh, and this member happens to live there...  ;D

Hmm,.. Plymouth is nice... I've never sailed from the port, but been on a small yacht there.

McG, it looks like quite a wide navigable area, but I suspect, like the Solent, it has only narrow channels for commercial/naval vessels and the wide areas at the side are quite shallow. True or false.

Whilst we are making suggestions... how about completion of Portsmouth as well?
Title: Re: Which game areas (harbours) would you like to see in the future?
Post by: McGherkin on February 07, 2010, 20:24:41
Hmm... Obviously Millbay and Devonport are deep, what with PA and HMS Ocean e.t.c. and we get cruise ships mooring outside the Breakwater, but there is a terminal up by Laira Bridge, which would be a lot of fun to get the Latitude alongside...

Plymouth is a bit of both, really... Although you've only really come across the leisure side of things... (not that Plymouth isn't a brilliant place to have fun in a small vessel...)

And it's the same sort of navigational challenge as Padstow... It's just a lot bigger...

Oh, and with Princess yachts, there's a storyline oppurtunity with the Marbella... (even though she isn't a Princess!)

What we need is a place with a short car ferry route(10-15 mins.).
Incorporating the route between Lymington and Yarmouth in the excisting Solent scenery would solve this.

I would love to see the Port of Vancouver( http://www.portvancouver.com/ ).  This would enable us to simulate the West Coast Trade between Canada and the US.  Canada needs a little representation in Shipsim.  The port of Vancouver is a scenic one also

Cheers,

Speaking of Vancouver in case you've seen Charlie St. Cloud with Zac Efron, there's one port you can put up with the opening sailing races.
