Apparently Dover has been bought by France... :-X

What happens now then?

Officially- nothing...
Unofficially, the admin offices will be moved to Calais, and English workers will be made redundant. Proper border checks will take place in Douvres- to help stop illegal immigration into Britain, of course... (for the uneducated, once you are in British lands you can claim asylum...)

When AT ferries were racing the PO Bilbao to Bilbao, the spanish port gave priority to the Spanish Fortuny... So can we look forward to SeaChance being given priority over the nominally English POs at Douvres?

Wow! As an area that pioneered short range RoRos, Douvres hasn't done too well... You have a choice of French or Arabic ferries, blying Bahamian flags, with the hold full of Swedish Scania/Volvo trucks, car decks full of Renault, BMW, SAAB etc..." and run between The Franco-German republic of Europe and the Communist satellite known as Britain (or Brian- easier for thick people to spell)...

WHY do immagrants WANT to come here??? MAD PEOPLE.

Actually, if you read carefully, you will see it is about a gold medallist dedicating a ship.

Sound like something you would have down in the med operating for Minoan Lines etc. Maybe its a gradual rollout of new branding...

Maybe P&O has been secretly taken over by White Star Line

Cruises from Dover to New York onboard the Olympic Spirit. Olympic Spirit sounds like some sort of cocktail

lol guys, I think it's a cynical attempt by the P&O Ferries to cash in on the 2012 Olympics, which is taking place in London.

Anyone willing to bet these ferries would be given new names in 2013?  ::)

I doubt that they will be called olimpic spirit and Olimpic Pride, it doesnt fit into the Naming of P&O ships, but, i do know that when the new ships are in service, the old Dover and calais may run to zeebrugge with the European Endevour.

Was there not talk of the Endeavour going Bolonge?

Zeebrugger has probably came about as a result of LDs partnership with trans whatever-its-called running to Oostende.

Please read the BBC news again. It has already been decided that OLYMPIC SPIRIT and OLYMPIC PRIDE has been chosen for the new ferries. I agree with you, it certainly don't fit with the naming policy of P&O ferries. But it has already been done.

Also here's the press release on the official P&O website about the naming of the new ferries: P&O Ferries named (http://www.poferries.com/tourist/content/pages/template/_footer_About_about_P&O_Ferries_press_releases_PR_-_Dame_Kelly_to_name_record_beating_Dover_to_Calais_ferry.htm) (click on link)

(assumng they haven't got permisision)

Of course by the time the second one is in service the Olympics will be over...

Errm, TFM, got your own olympics?

"Olympic Spirit in January 2011."

"A sister ship, the Olympic Pride, will be unveiled in the autumn of 2011."

No but apparently the IOC (I... Olympic Comittee) is touchy about people using the word 'Olympic'...

You could be right, a South African airline recently got into trouble with the FIFA for using images associated with the World Cup on their planes  ::)

Mind you, I wouldn't be too gutted if the IOC stepped in.......if P&O Ferries had to drop the 'Olympic' prefix, I think DOVER SPIRIT and CALAIS PRIDE might be more appropriate.

Ferry giant P&O renames ships using the word Olympic

A cross-Channel ferry operator has had to change the names for its two new ships after being warned they could be breaking the law.

P&O Ferries had been planning to name the two ships Olympic Spirit and Olympic Pride.

But the operator was told using the word Olympic could be an infringement of rights under English law.

So they will now be called Spirit of Britain and Spirit of France.

The boats are currently being built at a shipyard in Finland at a cost of more than £330million, and are due to enter service next year.

Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes will become godmother to the first of the new ships.

At 213 metres long and 49,000 tonnes, the two giant ferries will be the largest ships ever to operate between Dover and Calais.

Each will have a carrying capacity of 180 articulated lorries plus a further 200 cars and 1,750 passengers.

What is wrong with Pride of Dover/Calais? These new names are really really boring in my opinion. Seems like they had a board meeting and chose the first names they came up with
