Hi Norm, welcome to the forum ;)

You need to wait. SSE Will not be out until about February 2010. You can get Ship Sim 2008 for Christmas though, i'm sure you'll love it.  ;)

I think it should be an excellent gift for Christmas 2010.
The latest official estimated release date is April of 2010.
No, you will not be able to patch 2008 into 2010. It will be an entirely new game with all of the old stuff…only different.

I wonder if MSS 2010 will be more modder friendly like FSX or one of my favorite sims Silent Hunter III ? Some of the paint textures make me want to puke in 2008 with that horrible lime green. I would like to be able to make my own repaints or modify the menu screens, music, and widgets.

Then the best thing for you will be applying for a VSTEP (or Microsoft? MSS?) employee.

Then this isn't the game for you.

This simulation strives for accuracy, not eyecandy or user preference.

Just think how awesome the game would be if Microsoft was the developer. Although it would probably crash more. lol

You didn't by chance engage keyboard before brain, did you? Awesome as in awesome redundancies for all their ex-flightsim developers... ??? There's always one, isn't there?

I second that, TFM.

VSTEP did do a great job. For a small company with a low budget..
And what, precisely, would a bigger company with a bigger budget have achieved? prey tell.

Yeah, it'll be something like this with ships sailing the world in one Google Earth environment.  :P

Just think how awesome the game would be if Microsoft was the developer.

Let's see:

a) Train Simulator - has been axed by Microsoft and Train Simulator 2 is postponed indefinitely after years of delays , possibly never see the light of day.

b) Flight Simulator - the long running software (20+ years) unceremoniously dumped by Microsoft and hundreds of employees have lost their job.

I'm willing to bet if Ship Simulator had been part of the Microsoft portfolio, it would have gone the same way as the above two.

As for people calling SS2008 a Microsoft product, if I had a £1 for every time I hear somebody say that, I would be a millionaire! And finally I think on future Ship Simulator package, Vstep should include a stickered sign which says "This is NOT a Microsoft product". That ought to put a stop to it.

Hoy,
Well,if Shipsim was a product of Microsoft than:
It was prohably dropped afther a year, because if you see what steerable ships they build on the last version of FS.The ships looks fine however the dynamics sucks realy.

Their would be no input from members, realise that most of what the members here put on this forum, within lines Vstep is willing to create.

Compare just the 2006 version to the 2008 version, with all the updates between.
Shipsim has nothing to do with Microsoft, maybe they hain mind, that there was not much of a market.

Maybe that is because it is a flight simulator not a ship simulator. If microsoft can create the dynamics for aircraft, they can do dynamics for nautical vessels.

They can still only do dynamucs with the data given to them.

I doubt that they wold  get more data the VSTEP have, who make Professional Simulators.

Besides It wouldn't make enough profit so would probably not be here today..

Yup, I bet the largest software company in the world would get less information then a little simulator company in europe.

Microsoft could buy VSTEP tomorrow if they wanted too...

You personally have heard one million people say that?

Microsoft could have developed its own shipping simulator (game or serious) and it would have been bettern in some areas and weaker in others; just like any software ever developed.

One question to ask yourself is would they have agreed to a campaign to have Dover-Calais in one environment? I know over in america you think it spurious, but that would be to miss the point... In simple terms (bearing in mind some of the people here (and you know whom I'm referring to, I hope  ;)) does Micromush listen to its customers?

That is a really arrogant and narrow minded comment from someone who clearly has no idea of what he is talking about.

What makes you think that Vstep would sell up?

What if I were to say "Vstep could by 'Agent' Austin if they [sic] wanted too..."

Money...

Look at how many companies Microsoft has bought.

I'm sure they could buy the moon too, if it were for sale.

I appreciate you haven't experienced commerce for real, but it isn't as simple as that. For starters, VStep is a private limited company- not a PUBLIC limited company. So you can not very easily force a hostile takeover of a private company. Unless the owners of the said company wish to sell..

Now, if you had said "Micromush could make its own simulator and sell it at half the price of SS, until SS drops it, then MS puts its price up" you could have a point; MS could be classed as a predator. However, in the EU, GB and your own America, there are laws against that.

If you wish, I would be very happy to explain a bit more how these 'anti-trust' rules (using US terminology) actually work. However, I suspect you already know far more about it than I do

It doesnt help distinction that Flightsim, train sim, and now Ship sim have seemed to use the same font in the title.

is that by designs or just co-incidence?
