I voted for the Dover-Calais in the same environment, but we need to be realistic as it might be too big to include both ports in a single environment.

The route between Dover and Calais is 22 nautical miles (26 statue miles) apart;

The route between Southampton and Cowes is 11 nautical miles (13 statue miles) apart, and it's almost at the maximum coverage for the Solent environment in SS2008.

So can you see what I mean about being realistic? I don't know if VSTEP is able to increase the size of a single environment area without causing the game to become unstable or suffer from slow loading?  :-\

But Isn't Rotterdam Larger still?

Do you think we can start a Sister Campaign:

Bring Portsmouth into the Solent Environment...?

Hi Stuart,
I know you meant it in a very lighthearted way, but even so, these things are noted by the Vstep people, I feel sure. How else would they be aware of players preferences?

I will answer that. But only in a PM  ;)

But Isn't Rotterdam Larger still?

I've worked out from the beginning of Port Rotterdam at Maasmond to the end at Brienenoordburg (near Kreekse Haven), there are approximately 22 nautical miles of navigable waters, so it's possible. (buy only just!)

However the relative location of Dover and Calais probably means the environment would have to be rotated to fit both ports, leaving little else to explore within the Dover area, i.e. Folkestone and the famous White Cliffs of Dover.

Anyway it'll be interesting to wait and see what happens.

So, now I'm the official campaign supporter too.

 :o Welcome Mr WM

Kevin: I don't profess to know the actual inards of the SS programme, but I'm guessing that the programme, once you leave harbour, it just keeps showing water until it is told to start showing land. In which case, you could even have Southampton-New York in one environment for the Titanic fans, as an example.

As for the AI ships in the Channel, that would be similar for any other environment- with more or less ships dependant on your computer. Admitedly, one of the best aspects of the Straits is the Eastwards run along the edge of Plage de Bleriot which would be good scenery

So, how many ferries you think will be enough to satisfy people if Dover-Calais will be in same environment ?

One from each company?  Or 1 something like the Pride of Dover, 1 ~ European Seaway, 1 Cat & 1 SR.N4 hovercraft ?

Only the full fleet will do...

Well, there are 9 berths in Dover (well, 8, Berth 4 is missing)

So the current choice of ferries of Dover for VSTEP to model would be

Berth 1 - European Endeavour/Norman Arrow/Cote D'Albatre
Berth 3 - Maersk Dunkerque/Delft/Dover
Berth 5 - Pride of Kent/Canterbury/Burgundy/European Seaway/Dover/Calais
Berth 6 - Seafrance Moliere/Rodin/Berlioz
Berth 7 - ???
Berth 8 - See Berth 5
Berth 9 - Seafrance Moliere

(Correct me if i'm wrong TFM  :P)

Google Image these ferries and see which one you think VSTEP should add  :P

Dover also has a cruise terminal which could fit Ocean Star, a hoverport (Freedom 90 anyone?) a Marina (Classic Yacht and Marbella)

So actually even if Calais isn't in the same environment, we still have quite a lot of places for a wide variety of ships in Dover.

So the current choice of ferries of Dover for VSTEP to model would be

Berth 1 - European Endeavour/Norman Arrow/Cote D'Albatre < No longer operating from Dover
Berth 2 - Norfolk Line, sometimes P&O
Berth 3 - Maersk Dunkerque/Delft/Dover
Berth 5 - Seafrance Nord Pas-de-Calais (Only boat left small enough to fit)
Berth 6 - Seafrance Moliere/Rodin/Berlioz
Berth 7 - P&O And Rodin/Berlioz
Berth 8 - P&O
Berth 9 - Seafrance Moliere

(Correct me if i'm wrong TFM  :P)

Are you sure about SF Molly? I've been catching the same crossing (nearly) every week for months now and we have always gone from the berth 2 down from Maersks- although I can't remember the number.

Strange, As far as I kniw, it has to berth at no. 9 due to the length, and when I saw her in Do ver, she had to wait for us to leave berth 9, but if you have seen on berth 2/3, then obivously she can use that berth as well

Also, we have the Cargo Terminal for Agile Solution, and the Tug Haven for tugs...

Facing out to sea, the pier was on the port side, with the POD/POC coming onto the other side of the pier... then if I remember right theres the missing berth then maersk.

Weeks running, always that berth.

EDIT: DO they have fuel bunker lines to all berths? When I used to catch the PO Picardy on the last evening crossing it used to go to the western end of the main harbour and when I asked was told it was fuelling...

Well at the moment there is a bunker craft, and I think it would be easier to use the western berth with lots of free space.

Your description sounds like Berth 6, with berth 5 next door, and then the gap of berth 4 before berth3 which is Norfolk Line...

Tough question, but did the berth have a big bulky box on top?

Yes, just looked at MS maps local.live.com have a look.

yes, berth 6... which means POD/POC (cant remember which) came into 5! would explain why it took him 10 minutes to park it if its a smaller than normal berth! ;D

I don't think most ferries can use berth 5 though, only the Renoir Manet and NPC...

It must have been. Have a look at local.live.com and tell me if the small ship tied up is on berth 5- 'cos that's the one where PO had a problem getting in. ASAIR we've always gone from the one to the left. 100% certain that we were on a pier with moorings on both sides.

EDIT: I videod the dodgy parking on my 'phone. I will look tomorrow when i get to work

Then I'm certain that we were on 6 and the pod/poc was coming in on 5... but I will check on my phone to see.

Oh sh...sugar,

Having reviewed my phone, it would APPEAR that you are correct about it being berth 9 as berth 6 has a gantry at the end, which wasn't in my film (if it was, the POD/POC took it out).

Sorry TFM... Even I can be wrong sometimes

Okay, lets have some of the things we can do with a Dover-Calais Environment

Dover:

Cruise Terminal for Cruise Liners, eg Ocean Star
Ferry terminal for berthing Ferries
Marina
Dover Cargo terminal - Agile Solution
Tug Haven - Useful for mooring cargo/cruise liners, and ferries in bad weather
Eastern Arm, end is used for mooring vessels
Hoverport - Freedom 90

Calais:

Ferry terminal
Hoverpad (2, if you include the one inside the port)
Large Freight Area
More tugs
Can moor Anchor Handling Tugs
Another Marina
Drydock

Dover-Calais Environment:

Ability to do cross channel services. Not just with ferries, but you could have the Agile Solution, or maybe a tug pull a barge from Dover-Calais, Personal Yachts going from one marina to another...

The possibilities are endless!
