I find the game disappointingly unstable and some of the supplied missions are not properly tested - so that I have a list of missions which somebody wrote which just don't work. This is rather poor, considering the wonderful quality of the work which has gone into some of the models - the Titanic is quite stunning. Again, some of the missions are ludicrous - there is one which involves a VLCC on the east coast of the Isle of Wight - an area which I know well. Nobody would dream of taking a VLCC into such an area. To add to the fun, there are lots of pleasure craft around which get mown down by the VLCC, and I am told that the AI craft in the model don't do anything intelligent - if there is a VLCC in the way they just hit it. A bit hard for the VLCC pilot to be then told that he has been in ship to ship collision! Finally I had to anchor in Bembridge Roads and a pilot boat had to be brought down. At this point I had to save, so when I returned to the Mission the seas were immense, promptly capsized the pilot boat and washed her onto the deck of the VLCC! It does get rough in Bembridge Roads, but not like that - weather like that would have washed away Chichester Harbour!
Finally, the support in the forum is good, but the administrative support is dreadful. I have been waiting two days for the emails to enable me to download and run New Horizons - this is not acceptable in these days of on line business.
I should add that I am a former seafarer and enjoy using SS to recapture some of my youth. I remember meeting a man in a 23 foot yacht on the south coast of England who said that in real life he was the master of a 250000 to VLCC. I asked what he was doing on the small boat and he replied 'Practising the arts of seamanship, sir.' There is something of that in SS.
