Hmmm...
« on: February 16, 2008, 22:25:54 »

Hmm, I bought a new pc recently and wondered it is good enough for SS08 ;D.

processor: Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2140 @ 1.60 GHz (dual core...)
RAM: 2048 MB RAM
graphicscard: GeForce 8600 GT 1024MB

Thank you :).

I hardly do not believe that you got 1024 MB on a 8600 GT card if you have not done major over clocking of the  GPU.... ;D The correct value is 256 MB :P

Hi Nub Cake.

I think processor speed might be a problem. Ship Sim can hanlde dual processors, but they must be at least 2GHz (minimum spec), according to Carl a few days ago. At 1.6GHz, I think yours may be too far down the scale to work properly, assuming it can handle it at all - sorry.  :'(

To complicate things a bit, Questviewer only sees one of the two processors, I believe and that needs a minimum of 2.4GHz. (Although I can coax it to work on a 2.2GHz machine here, under Vista).

So, I suspect that you may have problems with this configuration.

No, 1024.

I think that is not completely wrong actually.
With these new nvidia cards, even though the card has its own physical memory, it will still get a share from the main RAM.
My 8800GTS has 256MB on it's own, but it also lists 1GB as total graphics memory... It just grabs a bit from my total RAM.

Show me the page that list a GeForce 8600 GT 1024MB card for sale??? :P :P :P

That means that my 8800 Ultra got 7 GB at least :D :D

You are linking to a 8800 GT not 8600 GT...  :-X

Lol.. I still think I'll have a point here.

Check out this site: http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce8.html

Still... what is the table saying for 8600 GT. It says 256 MB!
And please don't mix shared memory and all other nonsense into this. He wrote 8600 GT 1024 MB and not 8600 GT 256 MB. And I did get currious. Now we all know that what he did specify was something totally else than the memory the GPU actually got when you buy it.

This thread gave turned into a really interesting discussion anyway...it's based on misunderstandings  :D :D

God, the fact that you guys don't believe me, winds me up. I know what video card I have and what it can do. Why should I "lie" about it? This wasn't my question either, I asked if my PC was good enough to handle ShipSim, and not discuss about my graphics card! Look at the photo and STOP this discussion, thank you.

Edited for language, DJM.

Hi Nub Cake.

If it's any consolation, I believe you!  ;D

I don't think it was you they were questioning, but whether TJK had provided a llink to the wrong card's specifications.

Actually, it makes no difference, so who cares? 8600 and 8800 are fine. Ship Sim is not very demanding of the video card. It does need a fast processor though. 1.6GHz was the sticky bit.

I agree, getting a bit off topic here..
Another thing to consider is perhaps if you use xp or vista, regarding the 2 Gb RAM..
For xp it's fine, for vista it's minimum...

Hello JHB,
http://uk.shoppydoo.com/price-video_cards-gainward_bliss_8600gt_pcx_tv_dual_dvi_1024_mb_ddr_ii_pci_ex.html
http://www.ciao.co.uk/Gainward_BLISS_8600GT_PCX_TV_Dual_DVI__6755212
Also Sparkle has the same configuration with 1024Mb GDDR2.
A Google search with the keywords "Gainward 8600GT 1024" could have given the answer

I have dual core 2 processors running @ 2.13Ghz, so if Questviewer can only see one processor, then my PC is just  scraping the barrel.

I think it is unbelievable that Questviewer can only see one processor - I wonder if that causes the random Questviewer crashes that I suffer from time to time?

Also, what about those with Quad-processors? Does it mean Questviewer can only see one processor and not the other 3?

No doubt future Ship Sim release would require more CPU power, so if the issue with Questviewer [only seeing one processor] is not resolved, then I foresee a lot of heartaches and frustrations...........

You have to bear in mind that there are two parts to Ship Simulator. While Ship Sim can see two processors (don't know about quad, though), Questviewer apparently can only see one.

Now, Ship Simulator needs 2.4 GHz (single processor) or 2.0 GHz (Dual). But Questviewer only sees one processor, irrespective. However, my understanding is that it doesn't need 2.4GHz. (It's difficult getting to the figures for this, so this may not be correct. It's my best guess, having looked at 3DQuest technical data and so on).

Best option is a single processor 152GHz with 18TB of RAM. Or as close as you can get.

Ultimately, despite the hype multiple processors are not properly implemented (if at all) by most software packages. Windows itself is less than good and lots of the core functions within the Windows Kernel don't see multiple processors. So all in all, the extra speed is largely an illusion (or marketing deception, the choice is yours)

I must go and lay down now. My brain hurts.

No, we all get that. It's by no means uncommon with highly specialised Games Engines. I don't think Questviewer is substantially worse or better than most of the others around.

My wife play Morrowind and similar games. She has the same sort of random crashes and lock ups.

My son plays all sorts of action games and they also do similar things from time to time. None of them are frequent enough to cause us to do anything but sigh and reboot.
