Here's one: Britannic was designed to stay afloat with 6 compartments flooded, so what caused the flooding of the 7th?

Hi RMS Gigantic, I don't want to be really unpleasant, but maybe you should read the last post...  :-\

Did you read the discussion of yesterday night about Titanic ? I think we can leave aside the way she sunk in this topic, and focus on other subjects. Just a thought.  ::)

Arg, I have been living for 8 years in Marseille and I must confess I don't know. Maybe, "La bonne mère" nickname for the cathedrale "Notre Dame de la Garde" ?

I was lucky, Luc.

Ok this is a question which I don't have the answer (!) : The add-on to ship simulator 2006 brought a fishing boat to the game : Which kind of fishing boat is it ?

Hello trains,
What are you telling? There is no ramp, no deck, nothing to handle fishing gear at the rear of the North Star, to the contrary of the stern trawler of your picture!?  I can make an error about the English name, surely, but your answer is inconsistent, not better than mine, sorry. Search further...
Luc
I found a picture (http://www.rossrevenge.co.uk/trawl/trawling.htm) of a side trawler
Another one is my own boat...

i don't think so. this is a trawler.

Yes that is a trawler..

But Luc said Side-Trawler... wich is what the Northern Star is, a trawler that hauls the trawl gear from the side.

Not all trawlers are the same..  You got side trawlers, stern trawlers, factory trawlers, wet trawlers, sailing trawlers..

Hmm Eric, not quite, Boomkorren are those gigantic chain-nets being slept on the seabottom, hanging at the extremities of the ...booms (?). My English is not up to the task.
Here (http://www.noordzee.nl/visserij/boomkor.html) a good explanation (in Dutch, as I dont know how it is called in English).
Luc

Errare humanum est... My question was:
The name of both bridges leading to the outer pier of the harbor of Marseille...

Thank you Luc,

I was not really answering, just quessing the way that it was done by the "Northern Star", NOT the way the new ships have a go at it. My Engilsh knowlegde let me down,  on that one.  :(

We need a real fisherman to help us out.  :)

Thank you for commenting / de voorlichting sofar,  ;)

Hello Eric,
That is the difficulty, vocabulary about older fishing methods. Boomkorvisserij is beam trawling in English (thank you Google), and in Dutch, the name for side trawling is "Enkelvoudige trawlvisserij",  and there is a good synthetic explanation on the same site, with a picture of Z41.
It was the most common method until beam trawling was introduced, so as to destroy the seabottom.
Side trawling was a pelagic or a bottom fishing method, depending on the season, place, fish and of course the gear used. Boards kept the net open, like minesweepers do, and the "mouth" was kept open by small spherical "floats" at the top side, and weights beneath, made of a mix of chains and rubber (cut out from tires..) so that they could (more or less) roll on the bottom.
But North Star has "galgen" (gallows?) only on one side, although it is a North Sea trawler, so that it could be a seine trawler, with an encircling net.
We look for a Fisherman's friend...
Regards,
Luc
Edit: I found a good site (http://www.mi.mun.ca/mi-net/fishdeve/methods.htm) in English

Hi,
I like this game on the forum we always learn some new things. Thanks for the explanation!  :D

And Luc, (for joking) why are you trying to underline my lack of knowledge of Marseille each time?  ;D

Ok this time no chance to guess the answer, I don't know.

What is the origin of the terms "port" and "starboard"..?   ;)

The origin of the term comes from old boating practices. Before ships had rudders on their centerline, they were steered by use of a specialized oar. This oar was held by a cocksman located towards the stern (back) of the ship. However, like most of the rest of society, there were many more right-handed sailors than left-handed sailors. This meant that the right-handed sailors holding the steering oar (which had been broadened to provide better control) used to stand on the right side of the ship. The word starboard comes from Old English steorbord, literally meaning the side on which the ship is steered. The old English term steorbord descends from the Old Norse words stýri meaning “rudder” and borð meaning “side of a ship”. The modern term "steering wheel" comes from the same language root as "starboard" or "steer board".

The term for port, is derived from the practice of sailors mooring on the left side to prevent the steering boards from being crushed. Because the words larboard and starboard sounded too similar to be easily distinguished, larboard was changed to port.
