What is unusual for a regular Sailing ship like Flying Cloud?
Not the two steering wheels (Original model and cockpit view)
Not the no bow wakes or splash.

I think it is having bare yards - i.e. no sails. I would expect to see sails fully furled and lashed when not in use and probably only bare-rigged when in for a refit ??

Hi Steve,

Flying Cloud has a strange history in SS. I think that perhaps she was not originally intended to be even a static vessel.

She appears as only scenery in the New York environment, on the East River south of Pier 17.

When she was made a static and an AI ship, she was initially backwards in her bounding box, causing her to sail stern first as an AI ship.

When she was rotated to sail bow first in an update, her mooring points were not rotated. Her forward points hung in mid air near the tip of her bowsprit.

Being equipped with a diesel engine eight years before Rudy was a glimmer in his mother’s eye was just the last indignity that grand lady suffered.

Regards,
Marty

She looks like the Deespona model from Turbosquid, but with fewer details on deck and hull.
Her spars are quite detailed and accurate, and the rigging is also accurate. For the purpose of study, reefed sails would have been a distraction.
Making her drivable under full sail would not be feasible in a simulator with limited wind effect. It is only a slight exaggeration to say that there are not enough keys on the keyboard to fully control her.

Possibly what matt5674 is alluding to is the absence of a radar image of Flying Cloud on the chart. However I note that where she lies in Aquatic Park, San Francisco, she not only has a radar image but it shows all her yards and bowsprit too. See attached Pictures.

Well, it would make sense that she can't be seen on radar.

Biceaus it is a wooden ship  ;D

(And wood doesn't reflect high frequency waves verry well.

Hi Angus,

I think what you see is the Flying Cloud that is a permanent part of the scenery.
She does not even have a silhouette in the compass rose on the chart. As a static ship, she never needed one.

Regards,
Marty

The FC in New York has no silhouette. I think the one in SF was made by hand for that environment.

Flying Cloud in Traddles' image at the top left show her icon, a Player ship. and all of the answers are correct. No sails, diesel engine, mysterious chart silhouette, her early times as static and a.i. reverse while placed. Flying Cloud is one of Ship Sim '08's mysterious ships. All of you can go if you want.

Veeery interesting all of this - especially the post from MV Smith. (that maybe explains why I crashed into it whilst still several yards ahead of it the other day).
OK - a question:
I have a motor yacht like the Portferrio Angel (I wish) and it is being refitted. I notice that the propeller is all pitted and nasty. What causes this? (answer carefully)

Not the anode - but a more propeller related problem. The boatyard people are now sucking air through their teeth and pointing and calling Bert over to have a look and complaining about how difficult it is to get spares for this thing and mentioning large sums of money (just like in your local friendly garage).

Please don't tell me it's something like Megamindy on the Pioneer that I can barely see.
