The forum environment project - Project stopped
« on: February 11, 2011, 15:01:17 »

Today I had the idea of creating a “forum environment” this would be an environment created by the shipsim community for SSE. Every modeller on the forum could do some parts of it and these parts would come together in a big environment.

This idea came because there are only two environments in the winners of the CCC.

First we have to decide which environment we want to build. And Please don’t say I want this environment because it’s cool, but offer how it would improve SSE. After that I would create a poll and you, the community can decide which one we should build.

I hope you like the idea and if you have any idea how to improve this, feel free to say it.

More information will follow, if I see that you are interested.

Kind Regards,

Joey1

This I think would be a great idea - I am up for it

get a environment, and divide it up into tiny chunks, a lot easier then being thrown into the deep end

Time for your opinion

In Step 1 you can suggest your favourite environment for the Forum environment project.

If you want to suggest your favourite environment here please describe the Port, Island...(etc.) by

  • Name
  • Location
  • Facilities
  • Describe what makes this port different from the others
  • Post some Pictures (please not more than 3 per environment)

I hope we get a lot of suggestion.

Kind Regards

ok here is my favorite that i think might suit allot of ships in SSE

Name: Dubai Harbour
Location: Dubai (UAE)
Facilities: Skyscrapers, Large Cargo Terminal, Cruise Terminal, leisure centres ;D
: This harbour is different from the other SSE harbours is because it is in a total different location.. Its in the Desert shaped area and one of the hottest places. It has the highest Skyscrapers and the 7star hotel of Dubai. The Beach stretches all across going passed many palm tree'd areas and the best time is at sunset when all the skyscrapers are just turning on the lights  ;D

Mine would be Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor is a marine naval base located on the Hawaiian island Oahu. Pearl Harbor mostly known by it's attack on 7th of December, the USS Arizona and USS Missouri which still remains there.
The name Pearl Harbor was because the seafloor was overpopulated with pearls.
This enviroment should have clear water.  :)

im happy to help make 1 ...

    * Name : port of felixstowe (Harwich Haven)
    * Location: Essex , England
    * Facilities : Cruise terminal - Ferry terminal - container terminal(s)over 3 miles long! - pilot / tug bassin - marina - small oil terminal - pier - trinity house pier (Could be fun for fairmont sherpa) - ex stena hss terminal

 * Describe what makes this port different from the others: this port has everything from small mariners to the biggist ferrys in the world (Stena Hollandica & Stena Britannica) and across the small river is the port of felixstowe capable of handling emma maersk and other Ulta large container vessels and i also think it will be fun because you could make missions with a ferry from harwich - Hoek Van Holland like in real life ...so pleace vote harwich it is a very interesting port and in the old days train ferrys came her and navy ships!

OK, so firstly, I thought, what about somewhere with a shipyard

So I thought about:

Turku

Location: Turku, Finland
Facilities: Ferry Terminals, Freight areas, Shipyard for Ship construction
Describe what makes this port different from the others: Well, The environment also ices up, not sure if that is a facility we could incorporate onto SS. Also it has a shipyard where ships are built, so would be interesting to get ships to start from there on a maiden voyage, and for their sea trials etc.
Post some Pictures (please not more than 3 per environment):

Um... might have to Google that one - not been there personally...

Helsinki

Location: Helsimnki, Finland
Facilities: Ferry Terminals, Freight areas, Cruise Terminals, Shipyard for Ship construction
Describe what makes this port different from the others: Similar ytto Turku; The environment ices up, has a shipyard where ships are built, so would be interesting to get ships to start from there on a maiden voyage, and for their sea trials etc.
Post some Pictures (please not more than 3 per environment):

Hmm... Google again

Another area which would be interesting could be:

St Malo and the Channel Islands

Location: Channel islands and France
Facilities: Ferry Terminals, Freight areas, Drydock, Marinas, Cruise areas/ at anchor
Describe what makes this port different from the others: This would be interesting I feel, and with the new InCat coming would be really nice - you can have smaller freight vessels as well.M Also you can do little freight runs between the islands. and St Malo is not a easy place to go to requires skill to get past rocks and islands, and the port itself features  areas of very low depth, some quite close to the ferry terminal. St Malo itself is very pretty. And, as like DCitSE, you can do full runs from St Malo to Jersey/Guernsey without changing environments

Post some Pictures (please not more than 3 per environment):

Are... something different...

Kiel Canal

Location: Germany
Facilities: Um... Canal... bits at either end
Describe what makes this port different from the others: Not really a port, but I thought its something different - Kiel Canal connects the North Sea with the Baltic. I think there have been many request tfor this, as it really is something different...

Post some Pictures (please not more than 3 per environment):

Um... Google time...

OK there are four ideas  :)

Here is one of my favourite ports

Venice

Location: Venice, Italy

Facilities: Docks for smaller and large ferries, docks for cruise ships, oil and container terminal, shipyard, lots of
small canals and yacht marinas.

Describe what makes this port different from the others: Venice is an Old Italian city which is simply magic. It has hundreds of small canals and bridges. Surrounded by very nice old buildings – It’s a floating city. But there are not only old buildings Venice is one of the largest Ports in the Adriatic Sea.

Pictures:

To see how nice Venice is go to Google Earth – there the whole city is modelled in 3D. It could look like this in ShipSim.

Here are some impressions:

I would have thought more people would have been interested...

Hi,

sounds like a good idea.

Just a thought of mine: I think ports are great where you can sail with small boats and also larger vessels because I guess that people like to sail with private yachts, some with cruise ships and some (like me) prefer to sail with cargo vessels.

For my point of view a harbour like venice would be great because it offers all possibilities.
Other ideas could be Bergen (Norway) or Stockholm. Just to mention two of them...as I like Scandinavia I just mentioned them...knowing that there are 1000 others (e.g. Wellington, New Zealand).

cheers

Thanks for all your suggestions they are all great.

So I think we should start the poll now.

But I don't want to miss any of you suggestions. So I do this list first

*Dubai
*Pearl Harbor
*port of felixstowe (Harwich Haven)
*Turku
*Helsinki
*St Malo and the Channel Islands
*Kiel Canal
*Venice
*Manchester ship canal
*suez canal
*panama canal
*street of gibraltar
*monaco
*river moesel n germany
*sicily
*adriatic sea
*shanghai
*tokio
*Antwerp
*noordzee kanaal (IJmuiden and Amsterdam)
*Hobart
*river themes in london

I think that are enough for the moment - but we still need people to help us!
And some locations like sicily, adriatic sea, panama canal and other very large locations are too big for the first forum environment, I think.
But please post your opinion too.

Kind Regards,

Joey1

EDIT: Oops alex 3d you were faster than me, added your locations to list
