If the titanic does sink...
« on: September 09, 2007, 04:04:48 »

i hope its sinking is accurate, minus the breaking.if it does, they should make a 2-dimension model and set it in a water physics program and in it add a water pump that would fill it up to calculate the accuracy of the sinking.

a TWO dimensional model? I think a 3d version would be best...

The problem is that even using a sophisticated maths analysis of the design, we still do not know 100% what damage occured and when/how. We don't really know what speed the impact was at.

If all of that was known then a pretty accurate sinking model could be developed, but there is simply too many unknowns.

I do know one fact for certain. Before the impact it was above the water. Some time after, it was below. That's a basic, but perfectly true analysis of the sinking

there ws a rumour lately that it may have hit an iceberg and this could have been a significant cause of the sinking.

I think that misplaced water was the major factor of the sinking.

Pure conjecture :D

Can I just point out at this time that ships sinking is a bad thing, surely the idea is to keep them afloat guys :)

Oh dear..

Look. It's time for brutal honesty... They got it right at the beginning of the titanic film... someone left the bath tap running.

All this obsession with sinking takes me back a few decades to a young Woody Allen explaining how immature his wife was:
“She was so immature that she would walk right in while I was in the bathtub and sink all my boats!”

It was definitely Leo DiCaprio's bad acting that sank that ship...

Oh, I'll go there...in due time. Thou shalt not run up the Titanic's engines to full speed on a maiden voyage.

the engines would have been run in at full steam during her sea trials, before her maiden voyage, thus giving her her known maximum speed. one would think anyhow, im not a titanic buff, although i do wonder where she would be now if she never sank, probably would have been a victim of a german torpedo during the 1st world war instead  ::)

Over the course of the Titanic's maiden voyage, it was customary to slowly increase speed with each passing day. If the weather was nice for her final day, they were going to open her up and possibly would have got her up to 24 knots. The day before the incident, they were only up to 21.6 knots.

With that brittle high-sulfur steel, she probably would have made it to the bottom eventually. RMS Olympic collided with a destroyer at around 15 knots and almost sank. The resulting repairs delayed Titanic's completion and maiden voyage. Queen Mary collided with a destroyer at nearly 34 knots, sliced the destroyer in half and kept going. Oh, what a difference a few years makes in shipbuilding technology.

you learn something new every day ;), just out of interest, do know if she carried out sea trials before her maiden voyage, although she may have just ran through some testing on her way down to southampton from belfast ??

even less if you were on her during the storm, 2yrs ago i think, when she parked on the beach, have a great photo of her sitting next to the main road aground with a road sign stating that the port is 100metres ahead.  :D

i dont like water, people always used to ask why i went to sea then, had informed them that one of the first things you learn is that you never get off the boat unless you really have to, the ships your best lifeboat  :D
unless you were on the Titanic, (thought i'd better get back on topic  :D)
