Orient-Star steering issues in SSE v1.2.2 update
« on: October 09, 2010, 07:53:43 »

With the current SSE v1.2.2, how come the Azipod system on the Orient-Star is reversed?

Before, when you turn the steering to the right, it would angle the pull-pods to the right causing the ship to turn left, which is how I understand the Azipod is suppose to work.

Now with the new  update, the controls are the complete opposite.   Is this suppose to be a bug?

I must admit I had a heck of a hard time trying to manuever this bad boy with "reversed" controls.

I had just gotten used to the Ocean Star in SS08, now the azipod steering of the Orient Star is opposite..

No real problems with "Orient Star" azipods. If you want to turn to port move the mouse to port (left) and vice versa. The azipod will turn correctly to bring about the desired result. The system is not reversed, it is just the manner in which it is operated that is different and, in my opinion, a more logical operation. See picture below. It is perhaps worth mentioning that the same principle applies to "Bugsier 2" but as her drives are for'd of midships they turn the opposite way to "Orient Star". The correct turning effect still happens. Move mouse left to turn to port. Seemples  Possibly only British players will see the feeble joke as I suck my teeth. ::)

Oh dear Salty. ??? Now I am baffled, It could be that as a tester I have somehow got a part of a future update. To be honest I did not think so. I do hope that I have not confused others too. What you show in your picture is very obviously completely wrong, it is no wonder you find it odd. ::)

You certainly got me a bit confused.. ;)
With the Bugsier, as she has her azi-thrusters mounted in front, steering to port and going to port is to be expected..

Hello Salty,
Traddles is quite right, and the controls should have been like he explained and showed in the pictures. If I understood what you meant, you also agree? The possibility to adapt the parameters of the controls was so near to the release of the patch that there has been almost no time to check. You certainly know that in order to change such things, the program must be modified and tested before the remarks of the testers and of the players can be fixed, and after the fix everything should be checked by the testers. But even if it seems relatively simple, it is also not necessarily a quick process.
Mouse controls, keyboard default assignments, graphical indications must match the virtual pivots, foils and forces for each ship, each with its own parameters. Finally, the difference is just about 2 missing check marks.

To solve the question, a steering wheel will be -if things turn well- placed at the steering console, turning as required by international standards since some time, and already discussed in the forum. The 360° azimuth controls will be used for manoeuvring, and the wheel for steering up to an angle of 35°.
It should simulate (parts of the operation of) the steering system of such ships.
Regards,
Luc

Yes, using the azimuth controls à la ABB controls. Note that Orient Star Azipods have fixed pitch reversing propellers.
The steering wheel should be, turning CW lets the ship ahead turning CW.

I'm experiencing the same issue as illustrated by Salty.

With the original release of SSE v1.0 and the Prior SS-2008, the Orient and Ocean Star operates has how Traddle indicates it should.

However, with SSE v1.2.2, it is the complete OPPOSITE as shown by Salty.

So which way is it suppose to be?  Hard to imagine that the programmers decided to change something so major around in a relatively modest improvement update from v1.0 to v1.2.2 !?

This is so disappointing!   How can the guys at SS make such a big boo-boo with an "update??"

Traddles,

I'm assuming the Orient-Star screen captures you attached are from SSE v1.0, and NOT v1.2.2.

Orient Star steers easily in 1.2.2 with the L/R arrow keys.
If “precision steering” is not enabled, hold either Shift key down as you tap the L/R key.
To return to dead ahead, release the Shift key and tap either L/R arrow key.

Only the displayed orientation of the drives is screwed up. Don’t try to steer with the mouse unless you understand the problem.

That’s because you are not a registered SSE user.

I must admit that the PDF about the azipods sort of foxed me.

To figure out how to operate them, I chose the "Orient Star" in a "free roaming" mission in the Atlantic in clear weather and played around with the azipods to my heart's content to gain confidence. Observing the wakes of the pod thrusts will give you a fair idea as to which direction the ship will move when using them in a berthing situation and also how to use the keyboard mouse combination when using one pod as a stern thruster and one for an ahead and astern movement.

The SSE notes on using azimuth drives were adapted from my notes for SS 2008 to give SSE users a start in using the newer controls.
The latest patch has screwed up the relationship between the graphic indications of the azipod azimuth and reality, making the directions for controlling with the mouse incorrect or confusing.

However, steering with the L/R arrow keys is still intuitive as described.

Until SSE becomes stabilized—everyone agreeing on how things should work—attempting to provide instructions involves shooting at a moving target.
Vin_sun provides the best interim solution. Take her out where you are not likely to hit anything, and then experiment and observe.
