GTX 470
« on: August 29, 2010, 05:06:50 »

im trying to decide on a card to upgrade to that will run SSE because my current 9800GTX+ isnt gonna cut it at 17-20 fps.

im fixing to get a little bit of money for my birthday and im thinking about this bad boy..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=14-130-549&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Page=6#scrollFullInfo

would this be able to handle SSE nicely?

Well, there's more to it than just a graphics card..

But this card should be able to handle everything SSE can throw at it.

But I can't say how it will do for you specifically, it also depends on the rest of your hardware and in how you run your machine. (sofware use.. keeping drivers up to date.. keeping it 'clean' )

yea. i need more ram i only have 2gb xp. but my cpu is a core 2 duo e8400 3.0ghz and can handle most newer games well. but i realize that SSE is  very demanding of a good card

Yep a little more ram might not hurt, even though you do have the minimum required ammount..  If you can double that, you can run it perfectly... But even like this, it should be fine too, since you already get reasonable performance.

Again, it's always a bit 'theorethical' untill you actual try, ofcourse. It might well perform better than expected with 2GB of RAM. The graphics card is more important.

Ah yeah, I see.

Well it's still quite an increase, compared to 2. It might just make the difference between almost full-out and full-out.  ;D

Yup.. maybe you'll find out that you dont need ram yet, and that it will do enough good on it's own.

That's quite weird. Because when it actually worked for me I got more then 17-20 fps. I got 25-30 on a standard 9800 GT with a Intel Core Duo 2 3.30 GHZ and 3 GB DDR3 Ram.

Wouldnt really expect to much , going by the core/memory speed its lower then my Ati 5770 and my ATI 5770 runs around 15-20fps on medium/high settings.
Then again it could be my cpu which is a dualcore 3.16ghz.

A gtx 460 is almost as good as the 470, and it has a huge overclocking potentional, from 700 stock to 800+ mHz easy! :)

Like overclocking 100mhz on your memory or gpu is going to make such a difference.
You probably gain 5 or 10 fps at best at the cost of artifacts and a burned out vid card.

It wont burnout if your box has enough fans and overall has an ok temperature, if that's not the case, you may not overclock more than 50 mHz, if overclock at all.

And 10 fps for free is not bad ;)

Buying a vid card for a game which is still is in his beta state is pretty stupid.
There are plenty of problem with performance which can be either the bad support for vid card or perhapse something different.
So would be best to wait a bit before upgrading something in your system just for this awfull release of a game.

A 9800gtx for example should be more then able to run this game.

Daisai what are you talking about?

The game is now released, there is no BETA version now. There will undoubtably be more patches for the game, but the game is in the final release.

Besides, Austin has already reported that he gets about 17 frames per second, which is more than what I can say! :)

No it doesn't, it's a very bad card, the gtx 460 is better than the 465 and cheaper, and the 470 is better than the 460.

The most important when buying a new video card is to make sure it has plenty of memory for the graphics. F.ex 1Gb may not be the truth, look at it's specs and make sure it's dedicated memory.

My card is far from top end but I always have 30-40 fps in SSE, and the game runs very well because it has 1,5Gb of dedicated display memory. So keep this in mind.

465 is the "worst"
460 gives you lot of power for a modest sum
470 is better than the previous ones but also more expensive
480 is the best but also most expensive

I have the 470 and it's a beast when it comes to games, if you gonna SLI I would recommend two 460's thou
