What in the blazes are the controls for?

I've downloaded and installed Jumbo Javelin but there are these controls (not the engine controls, steering, or bow thursters) that rotate and such but what are they for, anyway?    Are they for the cranes or something else?

That other control is an Azi Pod. It basically works on the same principal as it does on the Bugsier (Correct me if i'm wrong). And allows you to face what direction you would like to face before you start to go ahead, or astern.

Well, I suppose, in a way, yes. But the Azi Pod is different, an Azi looks like this:



It just means that the prop can turn all the way around, allowing for more delicate manouvering.

On JJ it is not an Azipod, but a retractable, low power, azimuthing screw that is used for low speed maneuvering and dynamic positioning. It is located aft of amidships, near the after crane.
It is used in conjunction with the bow thruster to move crab-wise.

The azimuth control is indeed part of the DP2 system the ship is equipped with altough this is only used for offshore installation jobs and NOT during normal sailing and cargo operations. Therfore to get the best sailing experience don't use it !

What he means (I believe) is that it isn't used while the vessel is in motion. You use it for manouvering purposes. A bit like not using a bow thruster above a few knots.

As it is a device that lowers beneath the vessel, to have it lowered while the vessel is "steaming ahead" would just waste fuel and risk damaging the unit, would it not?

It can be used in missions to bring JJ alongside the pontoon or dock to move cargo, although it might not be used in real because of depth limitations in harbors. But, because we don’t have dynamic positioning, it’s the only excuse we have to play with it.
