Title: Project: "Iron Flounder" - Trailing Suction Dredger
Post by: llamalord on July 23, 2008, 15:43:47
"A trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) trails its suction pipe when working, and loads the dredge spoil into one or more hoppers in the vessel. When the hoppers are full the TSHD sails to a disposal area and either dumps the material through doors in the hull or pumps the material out of the hoppers. Some dredges also self-offload using drag buckets and conveyors. The largest trailing suction hopper dredger in the world is currently Vasco da Gama (Jan De Nul) with its 33,000 cu.m. hopper and a maximum dredging depth of 135m."

All updates on the project:
"Iron Flounder"
 will be posted here.

This project being developed by Llamalord.

Work In Progress Status:

Project Iron Flounder is currently at a total completion of 55%. I am looking for committed Beta testers for the "Iron Flounder Virtual Sailor Edition" If you are interested you can post at the bottom of this topic and let me know.

A long time ago some one told me that I should work with a more complex modeling system than Sketch Up.  At that time I didn't care much but now that I've had all the problems with conversions I've seen the light.  This project will be made in "True Space" which is almost a complete copy of 3DMax so it is completely compatible with all other 3D programs.

The "Iron Flounder" is Trailing Suction Dredger, This is explained above.  This is a fictional ship modeled after two real Trailing Suction Dredgers,

The "Cornelia"-Rotterdam,

And the "Marieke"-Unknown

The name "Iron Flounder" comes from a component that the ship is made of and the type of ship.  A Trailing Suction Dredger pulls sediment off of the floor of a canal or river, a Flounder is a type of fish that is known as a bottom feeder meaning that is pulls it's food off the floor too.

Pictures of the project will be in the post following this one.

I was planning on it but I've had some problems with some of the pilot house nodes when exported into DirectX format.  It's kinda hard to explain  but I'm trying Really, Really hard to fix this couple of nodes in ascii format.

So over all, I think so. :-\

Actually I've decides that I didn't like the windows color I changed it to this darker glass.
Title: Re: Project: "Iron Flounder" - Trailing Suction Dredger
Post by: Mad_Fred on July 29, 2008, 00:30:54
Hiya lord of the llamas

I think you should go for the clearer glass to be honest.

Dark might look good, but you have to think about being in there and looking out.. in, say VS.. or possibly SS..  ;D

That dark glass would not be really nice to look out of. In game that doesn't reallt work out like real tinted glass.

But for looks, I do agree.

You do have a point,

How about we break some where in the middle and I'll leave their base color black instead of the light blue and just make it slightly more transparent.

Although I wouldn't ask the designers of the QM2 though. ;)

Title: Re: Project: "Iron Flounder" - Trailing Suction Dredger
Post by: Mad_Fred on July 29, 2008, 03:54:43
Well, you can of course have it anyway you like, it is your project, but I was just thinking out loud, from an ingame point of view.  :)

I'm not keen on dark windows in games, because it's just not that goodlooking when you're actually playing from the wheelhouse/bridge. I prefer no glass at all, because a game just cannot give you clear glass like the real world has. It's always a sort of haze, that you look through, if you know what I mean..  ;D

Your picture is dead for me btw....  :-\

Fred.

Good job! I admire all you guys that construct these ships. The only thing that I see that you might change is the pipe at the bow. It would look better and more realistic if the elbows were 2 45 degree instead of 90 degree.
But like I said, GOOD JOB.

I need your guys help with something.

I'm going to start the really detailed modeling seen and I need to know what you want the real name of the ship to be:

AGD Iron Flounder  -Sea Going Dredger

YM Iron Flounder  -Powered Dredger

The name you chose will define what equipment is on board and what kind of missions it will have in the game. ;)

Title: Re: Project: "Iron Flounder" - Trailing Suction Dredger
Post by: llamalord on August 07, 2008, 16:02:57
An "Ocean going" dredger does exactly that, It goes in the ocean. ;)

The difference is where will this vessel stay: In a canal or harbor, or at the rotterdam entrance. :-\

Hiya Llamalord,

I'd say the Powered Dredger would be more usefull.

Suppose this vessel could be included in SS08 when it's done, then the most interesting environments to sail in are the ports, really. Then you'd have more things to make missions about, so to speak. More possible interaction with the environment... more than just the open sea maps, I think.

Certainly can - either of the two dredgers photgraphed in the first post can do both roles.

There Will Be All New Full Screen Renders In A Few Hours Time, So stay posted.

Also to answer your question about Logos, I'd rather not have a logo on this ship because it is after all a partially fictional ship.  Almost none of V-STEP's fictional ships have Logos. So I just thought it was fitting. :-\

Well, that looks great.

But I have one comment.

The ship is much to short, wich makes it look unrealistic.
Try to find some information about real dredgers and look at their sizes.

Beceaus you keep saying, a dredger is allready in development, I think a more realistic model is needed.

Try to find some information about real dredgers and look at their sizes.

Beceaus you keep saying, a dredger is allready in development, I think a more realistic model is needed.

Thank you Sam for saying exactly what I said a few pages back, glad it's not just me that thinks it is too short.

I'm really getting annoyed with that statement. :(

I have done weeks of research before I even made this hull.  This Dredger is close to a real dredger that works around Cape Cod MA.  The kind of dredgers you are thinking of are used in large comercial shipping ports like Rotterdam.  The size of a dredger is proportional to the amount of sand and water it needs to carry.  In smaller canals and rivers like around Cape Cod ships don't need any more than about 10 feet max to move around.  Also I agree that in those renders the Iron Flounder does look a little bit short but that is all about perspective.  Below there will be three images.
1:  Large Dredger
2:  Small Dredger
3:  A non-Perspectively influanced render of the Iron Flounder

I don't want to upset you, you are doing something I never could and it is impressive (and I assume time consuming). However, you have chosen to design the vessel with a very disproportional 'earning space' compared to the 'living space', and for that reason alone I would expect it wouldn't get into the game. Double the length of the 'earning space' and it would look better.

As an aside, the second photo "Cardium II" is a fishing vessel :)

I guess I just saw the hoses and the pipe and the storage tank and the suction arm and the... and I guess my not so guess was wrong.

I will stand by my model even after your hefty put-down.  This is a highly realistic model and I also will stand by that. :(

Also I just did the math my dredger has 2.5 feet less of living space in length than a proportioned larger dredger has. That's close to 1/5 of the vessels length.

Very nice Model Llamalord.

Why be negative.

Its nice. and i dont see any problems with it.

And he's not finish Yet.

So maybe he could have changed the lenght without you noticed that.

Its not finish.

So i dont see that you are negative.

But i love the model ;)

Ahoy Llamalord,
Those who can build better models have the right to speak. But I haven't seen any work (except for a few lightpatches and re-paints of just 1 vessel, the P6) that even can compare with your work in the slightest way. Keep up the good work, and don't let it spoil by some people who can only give comments.

Hi Supreme Emperor of the camel-like beasts.

Can I say "looks pretty good to me"?

Is the head-count enough now? (I have a block-vote of 50,000).

I note that often when people say "it's wrong", those people have no facts to back up what they're saying. Whether its "The PoR turns wrong", or "Latitude turns too fast" or "Latitude turns too slow", it often seems to be based on.... well, nothing at all.

If either of the adverse commentators above have some data to back up their claims of wrongness, let them speak now or forever hold their (cod) piece.

Looking good Llamalord!!  ;D

I also think it looks too short, but maybe that's because we are not used to see ships with this proportionals.

Look at this photo;

I don't know the English name for this type of vessel. It goes alongside dredgers and the dredger loads her with sand and water and then barge pumps the water out of the hold. If you look at the proportionals, it also looks bad with the "living area" and the "earning money area". But the "living area" also serve the purpose of buoyancy. Im having a hard time to write this down in English, so i hope you get my point.  ;D

Pls finish her, she looks great!

Maybe you want to change this though,

The connection for the dreding arms. At your renders its fitting directly to the hull. Most (maybe all?) trailing suction hoppers have it like on the pic, the dreding arm slides up and down.

Llamalord, I am not trying to insult you, but I only want to help you make your model better.

If you can show me one picture of the same size of ship wich is similar to that one, then you convinced me that your model is realistic.

But this just looks like a small dredger with big dredger equipment on it, and that isn't realistic.

Mostly, small dredgers have a bucket hoe.
Like this one: http://www.deme.be/equipment/Durme_GB.pdf
Some have a crane with a bucket.

But, there allso are small dredgers wich are more like a barge with a suction head.
Like these: http://www.damen.nl/PRODUCTS/CUTTER_SUCTION_DREDGERS.aspx?mId=8613
And these: http://www.damen.nl/PRODUCTS/PLAIN_SUCTION_DREDGERS.aspx?mId=8617

How long is your ship?

Well, I don't know a lot of dredgers, maybe someone else on the forum who works on a dredger can convince me.

Your modelling skills are great, I would never be able to do that good in gmax.
But I think your weeks of research weren't well spent.

Well you sure have done a fine job of insulting my work and my intelligence.

Here is said dredger that is just as small as mine;

And here is another trailing suction dredger that is only a few feet longer than The Iron Flounder.

I completely agree that most small dredgers have large buckets or scoops but some dredgers that have to handle small areas with a greater rate of speed are trailing suction dredgers.  I hope those pictures prove my point to all of you non-believers.

To settle everyones stomachs the Iron Flounder is ~112.76 Feet Long and ~31.65 Feet Wide.  I've never lost my temper on this forum, or any other for that matter, and I'm not about to lose it now.
Title: Re: Project: "Iron Flounder" - Trailing Suction Dredger

The Severn dredger (http://www.vesseltracker.com/en/Ships/Wd-Severn-7430931.html?show=photos) (IMO 7430931) seems to be 230ft long and has a beam of 46 ft.
But there are indeed dredgers of all kinds and sizes, as many as there are waterways having various bottoms, sand, gravel, mud, cars, anything.

Did you already know how much materials "Iron Flounder" will load? It is indeed at this stage of the design that you can best check the underwater volumes: unloaded, with the propellers just near to the surface, and loaded at maximum draught, water almost at the main deck. It is of course that volume that will define the kind of dredging work, and I am convinced there are more small dredgers than big ones.

Regards,
Luc

Hi llamalord,
Your Iron Flounder is a great ship and think must go into the shipyard as a lot of people would like to put in into there game,

Your dredger looks great, but not like the ones on those pictures.
There are a 100 things different.

To me, it just looks like a large trailing suction hopper dredger where they toulk a 100m out.

Those ships on those pictures are very different!
I am talking about breadth, details, position of wheelhouse, shape of the hull.

She currently lives at the Mystic Seaport in Mystic Connecticut.  This is the 100th year of the Sabino.  She still has the same engine that she was built with and has possibly the coolest history of any ship other than the Titanic.  For example most ships on get to sink once but the Sabino has sank Twice already.

I want to get the Sabino out as a 3D model for Ship Simulator for her 100th birthday.  And show America's Pride for the Last American Coal fired Steamer.

Yes I'm not quite done yet with the base model but I have done alot in the last few days sense that last render.  All I have calculated that I have left to do is,

I've left these details for the last because I have no resources that show me for instance, Which way the last railing support on the rear stairs go, Lucky for me I'm going to visit the Sabino again this week end. :)

Well, Hi fellas

If you take a look at my progress post (First Post) you will notice that I have updated my progress.  In other words new renders and possibly some virtual sailor screen shots will be coming soon.

For fans of my other models be sure to take a look at the SS Sabino topic for another update.

Any Virtual Sailor Beta Testers out there?

The Iron flounder is almost ready for it's first virtual Sailor appearance.  I only have a few more bugs to work out of the system and then it's off to you guys to find the rest.

Moderators Please Note:  Although this ship may be connected with Virtual Sailor in post of late I still consider this an active Ship Simulator project and would prefer it to stay located in the Active Projects Board.

Thanks for your support,
   The Lord of the Llamas

(http://Iron Flounder Ready for Virtual Sailor!!!)

The Iron Flounder Virtual Sailor Edition v1.1 (VSE) is ready for any follower to sail.

Right now the only way to receive Iron Flounder VSE v1.1 is by Personal messaging me.  You must agree to a standard licence agreement and then I will E-Mail you a self-installer.

In under a month www.llamalord.-org"-" in place to prevent from linking to root provider site. will be up and running with all sorts of downloads, videos, screenshots, and tutorials for True Space among others.  I will be hosting many boats such as the Iron Flounder, The Imperio, The SS Sabino, The Privateer, and several yet unnamed vessels.  Also a selection from my buoy project will be there along with the long awaited "Light Ship".

I will post some pictures of the Iron Flounder VSE v1.1 as soon as my computer with VS is done with my 12 hour video render of the SS Sabino which will also be available on request and on llamalord.org.

Thanks for your support,
  Nick

Looking nice Llamalord! You may want to change the lights on top of the wheelhouse, it's now a pilot boat  :P Vessels with restricted manoeuvrability (which includes dredgers) have red-white-red lights (from all directions visible).

Cant wait to sail with it on VS  ;D

WOW!!!

Just because you put such an effort in to your pictorials I will most certainly address them!!! ;D
I have to do this little by little because they are so complicated and well thought out.

First the positions of the arms in that render are a bit "Old" or out of date so I have included an up to date render with the current positions and connection to the hull.

<Edit:  True Space is giving me a hard time rendering at the moment for some unknown reason so I will upload and then host the said render in few minutes depending on how truespace cooperates. :-\>
