Hi

Many of the modern ships are controlled with joysticks today , If you like realism you should go for the joystick ;) and not the keyboard , at least that's what I think  ;D

cheers

In SS08 I am using my Logitech G25 steering wheel for Rudder with the paddle shifters for thrusters.  I also have my CH throttle Quadrant hooked up and have 2 axis dedicated to Engine 1 and engine 2.  the Crane is also controlled with my throttle quadrant which is far better than a keyboard/mouse.
I can now use multiple controllers for multiple functions controlling each engine independently and never have to touch the keyboard.

The controls in SS08 are light years beyond the controls in SS06...

It isn't a waste if you do a lot of flight simulation... Everyone has their opinions though.  Besides, what is $150 in a setup like this...

The cooling blocks for my video cards alone were $300 LOL

Really the only thing I know of that fits your requirements with multiple throttles is the Av8tr that Rocking Mad Dog posted.  Dollar for Dollar it is definitely your best bet,

is the red switch on the front of the base a switch that can be used for bow thrusters? what about the 4 other black switches? do they go up and down or what can they be used for?

Also, would this be good if I could get it for a better price?

i think i would like to keep it simple and have realistic throttles for ships like the one i suggested

Well I followed RockingMadDog’s lead on this & got myself a Saitek AV8R Retro Joystick (PC) -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Saitek-AV8R-Retro-Joystick-PC/dp/B000I62PEK/ref=pd_bbs_1/202-4408955-3871060?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1184855258&sr=8-1

â€“ now for a senior sim player my boat handling skills with keyboard & mouse were erratic to say the least but with the AV8R, after only a couple hours use, I am quite pleased with myself…

    Loading containers!!
« on: July 16, 2007, 18:04:26 » Quote

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  Hello there,
I am enjoying Ship Sim 2008, but have found a problem with the first container activity in the missions. I successfully can load on the first, third and fourth containers, but when I try to place the second container, the program doesn't record that I have placed it, even though it is where the arrow points. If I carry on playing, when I clear the last container, it still says that there is one more to move.
Is this a bug in that mission, or am I doing something wrong? Incidentally, I've tried placing the container on either side of where the arrow points, but that doesn't work either.
Any help regarding this would be very much appreciated.
Stuart.

This was always happening to me with the keyboard & mouse but the first time I tried it with the AV8R I cracked it & completed the mission…

For £20 the AV8R has improved my enjoyment of SS08 immensely and until a purpose built Ship Control Unit at a sensible price comes on the market then I will continue using it…

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction  RockingMadDog

I might go for this aswell, cost quite a bit more here in Sweden but it still seems to be good value! :)

My steering wheel and pedals are good but it's hard to sit there holding the throttle for more then 20 minutes without having to amputate your feets  :D

They are unbeatable in car games though  ;D

if any of you are really super keen about these controllers or joysticks... have you seen this?

http://raildriver.com/products/shipdriver.php

i imagine it will cost quite alot based on the controller they sell for train sims.

Abaut the Saitek X-52. If you have the money, it's a very good investement!
I had a X-45 first, that whent well, but the X-52 works much smoother and has more control-options and a nice display for several functions. My mate has the X-52 Pro with the Saitek Flight-pedals, and that just works amazing!

But my geuss is, if you wan't to keep it low-budget, the AV8R will do just fine. ;)
