Actually, 4B pencil works best. I used to open up the pot, then gently run a the 4B pencil round the track. Worked perfectly!

I still do that for the few things that use a carbon potentiometer. (Told you I'm a Geek!).

Actually Terry, I never thought of that, nice tip, thanks ;)

You are never over-helpfull.. ;)

;D Thanks ;D

Goes back to my days as an 8 year-old learning about electronics (EF50 pentode was the thing!). I could only get old junk (jumble sales, the TV and Radio shop's trade-ins that they couldn't fix and so on), so I learned how to make as-new.

I still recycle things endlessly.

Terry probably has a supply of, or knows where to find, Lubriplate.

Sounds obscene, or very interesting. I'll have to ask the missus. She's the American around here. Amongst other things, she's run an electronics production line or two in her time. I expect I know it under another name.

It was/is a product of General Cement. I haven’t seen any in years. It’s a cream colored grease that was used for lubricating rotary switch contacts and TV turret tuners, among other things. As vital in those dear, dead days as your pencil.

Now you've really upset my wife. Fancy claiming my pencil is redundant...  ;) (Benny Hill lives on).

Regarding the Lubriplate, I used to melt vaseline (using a soldering iron) and that would run into the bits that needed it. From what my wife has told me, it looks like Vaseline is very similar.

Lol... "Kid that uses the toilet alot" I think a better username would be ideal. People cant really address you can they? And its a bit disgusting.
The phaise "WTF" is the shortend version of "What the ****" (You know what I mean...  :P ;)

Its not a very polite phares to use.

Edited to remove the quite obvious word, DJM.

So don't use it then!  ::)

Why are you stirring things up again, after so long?

Kid,

Your name was changed because it contained bad langauge.

If you want to have a decent name, you could possible politely ask the admin to change it to someting of your choosing. I'm sure he'll help you out. But your original name just was a bad choice.  ;)

Regards,
Fred

Im using Vista... IT was the admin that changed my nick. my real nick is ****kid.

I only asked you what O/S you were using. Why did you feel it important to try to tell me some stupid nickname? It's not like I care.

I was going to see if there was any useful information I could point you at, so that you could get the best from your new PC. But if all you want to do is try to shock people, I sort of loose interest. And there's absolutely no way you could shock me or even get me to raise an eyebrow, so don't even try, kid.

It hardly matters which os he is running, 4 Gb should cover it..
Seems to me a name change is in order to "calm the waters.."   :)

Does matter, only 64 bit operating systems can correctly address 4GB of RAM or higher. Thats WindowsXP x64, and Windows Vista 64bit flavours. (As well as Windows Server products, and 99% of *nix operating systems).
No point in getting 4GB if the OS will not be able to utilise it all. 32bit OS's can address 3GB. Using PAE or the /3GB switch, you can address around 3.25GB.

Hi Saltydog.

I didn't ask about his memory specifically. I asked about the O/S. If he's running Vista, there are dozens of aspects that can adversely affect his experience. There are a different set with XP, and yet another with 2000. I was just asking so that I could point him to the relevant guide or thread.

If memory was the only thing that affected how people's PCs work with ShipSim, there wouldn't be much going on in the Support Side of the forums!  ::)

I think a name change has been offered to him already. Probably a good idea to take advantage of that. However, as I've said, I don't find the current nickname of any note at all. The previous one was a problem though. Repeating it here even after his name had been changed by the High Cheeses was rather daft.
