I have yet to see ANY film about a ship which is not incorrect in some way. However "Das Boot" by Wolfgang Peterson is probably about the most accurate film about the sea in war time or even "The Cruel Sea". Both of these have a great deal of truth involved.

The cruel sea is the epitome of naval warfare films. Horrific story lines, fantastic acting... Remember that some of thos involved in Cruel Sea (film) had real naval experience. Mr Monserat was a Corvette commander and wrote the book loosely based on his experiences.

You are so right, what a great film, I see that the most famous scene from the movie is up on youTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OMcV3qgI08)

A great companion piece to the Cruel Sea (http://www.britmovie.co.uk/studios/ealing/filmography/72.html) has just been released on DVD for the first time in the UK the lesser known film "San Demetrio, London".

The film charts the story of a crippled world war II oil tanker's crew trying to get there ship home after an attack on the Convoy HX84 by the "Admiral Scheer" famously known as the "Jervis Bay" incident

If you liked "The Cruel Sea" and " In Which We Serve" this lesser known film is a perfect companion piece and is no less a classic than it's better known counterparts. Britmovie.co.uk (http://www.britmovie.co.uk/studios/ealing/filmography/30.html) has some information on the production of the film.

Sea a great painting of "Jervis Bay" (http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.maritimequest.com/daily_event_archive/2005/nov/05_hms_jervis_bay.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.maritimequest.com/daily_event_archive/2005/nov/05_hms_jervis_bay.htm&h=401&w=744&sz=65&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=onjB9oOeGmH7cM:&tbnh=76&tbnw=141&prev=/images%3Fq%3Djervis%2Bbay%2Bhms%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den) and read about the story's connection to the real U96 (of Das Boot fame) at Maritime Quest

I got interested in WW2 battle of the atlantic by following a wikipedia link.

Jervis Bay, for all those who don't know, was an armed merchant cruiser. Basically a civilian ship, with a pea shooter on the bow.

Their job was primarily a lookout/ morale thing- no one ever expected them to seriously engage the enemy. However, the enemy did not reckon on Captain Edward Fegen, who engaged the German Battleship, Admiral Scheer (as sonarman says above).

Although the German ship easily sank Jervis Bay- Capt Fegen and his crew- in their sacrifice of their lives- allowed the convoy enough time to scatter and run.

How sad that 60+ years on, we have HMS Cornwall in the same service.  :-[

Talking of films such as "Das Boot", "San Demetrio, London" and "The Cruel Sea" I should perhaps point out that the story of San Demetrio is true, she belonged to the Eagle Oil company and as all British merchant ships were at the time, was operated by the company for the British Ministry of War Transport.
The following excerpt which I take from a recollection of my own father which I wrote some time ago, may be of interest in this field. I quote:- " I would only be six years old at the time Pa was Mate on the "Magician" so this is from what I have learned later. "Magician" sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia, as Commodore ship of Convoy SC26 homeward bound for the U.K.. The convoy was attacked by a U-boat wolf pack in mid Atlantic about 307 miles south west of Iceland, when beyond reach of any escort vessels other than an armed Merchant Cruiser H.M.S. "Worcestershire". Of the original 22 ships in the convoy only 11 survived the attack and on dispersal in the North Channel "Magician" and (I think) three other ships made it safely to Liverpool on 9th April, 1941.  The ships were visited by King George the Sixth, who came on board each ship to personally thank the Officers and crews for their efforts on behalf of the Country and Their Government."
In those days a huge proportion of the male population of Liverpool were involved in some way with merchant shipping. My own family being a part of that group of men.

Angus.

I accidently voted for Titanic 1997 but i think The Poseidon Adventure is the most absurde bucause there is no way an upside down ship could stay afloat for that long, there are probably countless numbers of windows open, and doors leading onto the promenade and the numerous balconys, ventilation shafts, the funnel. Its a ridiculous film! i still enjoy it though ;)

Firstly, Paddy, you forget that the air trapped in the hull would form what amounts to a floatation device which would help to keep bouyancy for a bit.

Hi Angus. Some of the stories you read about the WW2 battle of the atlantic are really incredible. At least RN sailors had some armour/ weapons to help them stay alive. Merchant sailors- they were a different breed really. If you think what they achieved... and many of them DIDN'T achieve...

A (ex) neighbour was a sailor on Destroyer on russian convoys... when he could be persuaded to talk, his stories were of a breed of people which are sadly gone forever. I doubt the people of today would be quite so heroic... Actually, I change that. Not 'heroic' but 'ordinary'. Ordinary people doing heroic things.

Whilst it was technically extremely unlikely at the time of the film, do remember that Titanic was not even re-discovered at that time (1984 I believe).

Therefore it may well have been in one piece for all they knew. Also it was above the grand banks that it sank and the water is only about 15-60 fathoms deep.

Therefore it wouldn't have been impossible to raise it... Flaming unlikely, but possible. (If you ignore that 72 years of barnacles, rust etc means it probably would have broken up when being raised).

But your point is noted, and I don't think you are wrong to be surprised.
