Which is the most absurd film about a ship?
« on: June 17, 2007, 11:44:17 »

It's Sunday. I'm bored and someone is about to overtake me in postings...

So plenty of ship experts here. Which film is worst from a technical point?

My vote Poseidon 2006, reasons why:
-Bow thrusters still running hours after capsize- wheres the power from?
-Bow thrusters both running opposite directions
-Ship turning right way up before sinking
-Radar not good enough to spot the wave coming
-Any reason you want. It's rubbish

See? to avoid any more embaressment to the Titanic 1997 fans, I found a film which was worse. :P

Good one. I never thought of that as it always struck me as a silly film (yet I find it enjoyable). Are you referring to the way they didn't think of cutting the fuel off or the way that the bow thrusters suddenly stopped working after the freighter collision or the way that they seemed to be flooding operational decks for ballast water... the list could go on.

The whole film was dire in my opinion, especially after the enjoyable original which actually kept to the title!
Defoe and Bullock had no reason to accept this film, they have done far better in the past, and thankfully since then. The cop bloke was forgetable hence why I cant remember who played him, the script was poor, some of the acting was overacted especially when they ran aground and they were blatently making an OTT effort to shake themselves instead of using a moving set....I could go but its not really worth the effort for a pants film.

Ive never seen the new Posiedon, I enjoyed the original and cant face spoiling it with the modern reimaging.
As for Titanic, well sorry here mate but I actually enjoy it, DiCaprios mis-casting aside.

Andy

You can't remake a classic in my opinion, like Assault On Precinct 13.....love the original, don't even want to watch some tacky remake ;)

As for Titanic movie, good on ya ;D

Posiden 2006 was crap, the original was alot better, also, Stuart, the reason the radar couldn't detect the wave was, it was a rogue wave, even if it had detected it, there would have been little chance of avoiding serious damage. They would have just turned around (to my memory they did) and tried to 'surf' the wave.

Thanks!

Posiden, its not even worth typing about .It was just plain rubbish :D
I tuned in and saw its poor special effects on HBO a few months back. Very very unreal and it wasnt even enjoyable. I have Speed 2 Cruise Control on video, its enjoyable with action and thats about it. a big boat with a head on collision to an oil tanker and a mad man on board just makes good tv
Titanic was actually pretty good in term of the effects with water raging through the halls and spitting through everywhere.

Speed 2; Did you ever see a ship turning that fast only on its bow truster while going 20knots? ??? :-X

I think Poseidon2006 is a fine movie, it has a lot of action and it is possible!!!

Only the bowtrustersis poseidon aren't realistic. ;)

Theres loads that is ridiculous in poseidon.

Even down to the way the oil is alight in the upside down atrium... look at an oil slick on water.

Isn't it normal that oil(or fuel) can burn on the water?

On my opinnion the latest Poseiden movie is great but the older Poseidon movies are bad.

But the MS. Poseidon is such an ugly ship! :-X

Yes, but the oil sits ON the water and SPREADS out. In Poseidon it was in a small, rigidly defined area. The bloke jumped into it, swam round it and ballet danced out the other side. Totally ridiculous.

I find that the original Poseidon adventure was more realistic and had better acting.

The ship was the Queen Mary for most of the external shots and many internal. Hardly an ugly ship...

BTW. There is a myth that the Poseidon Adventure was a true story. It wasn't. At all. Never.

PS. Most absurd ship film... BEYOND Poseidon!

Beyond Poseidon? Do tell.

And I have to say that I do not honestly think Titanic belongs in this selection . . . But that is just me.

Beyond Poseidon was a 'wow weve made money here... how can we make some more.' Basically a salvage crew go to Poseidon to recover the many valuable artefacts onboard (the ship was on is way to the breakers in the first film!)

Unfortunately, a group of mercenaries are trying to recover smuggled nuclear material and it turns into a gun fight mostly. I mean... for heaven sake. Trust me, not worth watching.

(having said that there apprears to be subtantiated rumours that mv estonia was carying high grade weaponry and that is the reason it is encased in concrete and strictly off limits-so maybe not such a far fetched story...)

MV Estonia, eh? Where is she located?

All I know is she was in the Baltic. Her passengers and crew were aided by Viking Lines lovely MV Mariella, the elder sister of the Pride of Bilbao.

I don't know what route Mariella was on, as that would narrow down the location a bit. I do know the Baltic is fun in winter. Part of the reason for Mariella and POBI (ex Olympia) being so successful is that they were built with very tough visors to allow higher speeds even in rough weather. They are about the fastest in winter over the Baltic.

But at the time of the film being produced, there were few facts to be oblivious to though.

Not sure exactly when the film was released, but Titanic wasn't actually discovered until 1st September 1985.  That may have been after the release of the movie ;)

Regards.

DJM.

EDIT: Just checked the date....1980, so it was released before they found Titanic ;)

It was filmed in about 1974-75. There was no certainty that the ship has split in half, but I would concede that it takes a strong sense of poetic licence to raise a ship after submered 60+ years and to lift it up 4 miles.

I've just read the plot in wikipedia (details supplied by sureshot) and I think this wins the award for stupidity. Far fetched. Ridiculous. I've ammended the poll to allow this vote.

Yes, I'd go along with Titanic (97) but SOS Titanic is a much older film. Limited special effects, but more convincing acting.....z....z.z.z.z.z..z.zzzz...

Sorry, I dozed off there... Titanic was on in the background  ;)

Posiedon is OK, provided you don't look at it too seriously.
