Hmm ... is that not the famous shark jaws? What is the use of it? And behind it, chain stops?
We listen...

It's ok for the sharkjaws that is made to block a cable while connecting or disconnecting an anchor on it (for the rigs).
Behind are the towing pins that are used to maintain a cable in the axe of the deck during some short towing or anchor handling. Your turn.

What is (approximately) the maximum power of a ship diesel, and explain what is the limiting factor...
No trick, but no tip yet

Do you mean the max power we have reached on one engine today?
If yes, I would say around 110 000 hps on 2-stroke diesel engine on container ships. To get more power, we can either increase the number of cylinders or the bore or increase the rpm of the engine.
Increasing both first factors mean increase the size of the engine.
The third factor is not possible nowadays because of the propeller. Making large propellers to turn faster would increase the cavitation.
Am I right or am I completely off course?

Hello budbud,
Well you win, the value is correct, and indeed getting propellers of greater size is now not considered practical because of cavitation. That is why installation of two engines is being envisaged on twin skegged future container ships.
To you, budbud,

Perhaps, there are so many Dutch names there, so that it is quite possible. Did I win?

There has been no activity here for more than 2 hours, so I can pose the next question.. :)

How many winches are there on the lower-rear deck of the Vermaas?
Please take a picture and post it, to show you were there.. ;)
If you do so, you have answered correctly, and can pose a new question.. :)

There was a Nieuw Amsterdam, but she was bigger. :)
That Grande Dame from the 1930s was berthed down the street from my college in Hoboken.

Her seamen often walked up to the campus looking for a soccer match, and consistently kicked our butts. Those guys must have practiced at sea; if so, they probably sent many balls over the side. That led to the conjecture that one could navigate across the Atlantic by following the trail of floating Dutch soccer balls. :)

Hi sorry for the late.
I agree with the new rule about the two hours. The game can go on even if the one who must ask a question is not there like me... :D
The show must go on!

That's the idea, budbud.. Keep things moving.. ;)

Here's a new question:

You are at the helm of the Red Eagle, and you have just made changes to the controls.
Which manoevre is the ship about to make? (see photo)

Full turn to portside, I guess.
(if I'm right I won't be able to ask a new question before 7 p.m. this evening, so maybe someone else will ask...)

I'll count that as a correct. The ship will do an anti-clockwise turn on its own axis, but I think that's what you meant... ;)

How many Marmite-sandwiches does DJM usually enjoy on a Sunday morning..?   ;)
