A comment for James... THIS is what makes good officers
One story from a time on Pride of Bilbao, we were half way up the Bay of Biscay when we came past the round the world tall ship race.
We came alongside- at a distance of maybe 20 yards- a Russian sailing ship, Sedov (spelling?).
Apart from the seakeeping skills of both Captains- a 1000-2000 ton ship against POBIs 37851 and manouvering so close at speed was incredible.
Obviously some will say 'reckless' but it was done with FULL co-operation. The Captain, Robert Ross, put over the PA the radio from the Sedov, and we heard a conversation with their crew etc.
The atmosphere was incredible and it really put the finish on a wonderful trip.
So anyone who asks why I go on about POBI and Captain Ross- that was the time my respect was cemented. THAT is what makes a good passenger ships officer- making the trip special (in addition to the general boat 'driving' duties.)
One final point, that night we had the worst storm I've ever seen- sea over the top of deck 11 etc... So the Capt makes a special announcement late morning "... I'm sure you all wanted to know that the Sedov and the other ships are all ok after the storm and they made X knots and are at grid ref X.X"
That is professionalism of the best kind.
