A comment for James... THIS is what makes good officers

One story from a time on Pride of Bilbao, we were half way up the Bay of Biscay when we came past the round the world tall ship race.

We came alongside- at a distance of maybe 20 yards- a Russian sailing ship, Sedov (spelling?).

Apart from the seakeeping skills of both Captains- a 1000-2000 ton ship against POBIs 37851 and manouvering so close at speed was incredible.

Obviously some will say 'reckless' but it was done with FULL co-operation. The Captain, Robert Ross, put over the PA the radio from the Sedov, and we heard a conversation with their crew etc.

The atmosphere was incredible and it really put the finish on a wonderful trip.

So anyone who asks why I go on about POBI and Captain Ross- that was the time my respect was cemented. THAT is what makes a good passenger ships officer- making the trip special (in addition to the general boat 'driving' duties.)

One final point, that night we had the worst storm I've ever seen- sea over the top of deck 11 etc... So the Capt makes a special announcement late morning "... I'm sure you all wanted to know that the Sedov and the other ships are all ok after the storm and they made X knots and are at grid ref X.X"

That is professionalism of the best kind.

Yeah, that's really cool that is. Bet that storm was a bit scary though wasn't it?

It might have been if I was in one of the sailing ships, but not in a 37,583 tonne steel box.

It really was a good trip though. Doubt 'elf 'n' safety would allow them to do that sor of trick again.

Also since  bin laden attacked the win towers, security has meant that bridge visits are imposible. (I can't quite see the connection myself, but there you go).

Wow, thanks for sharing Stu.  Having crossed the channel/Biscay several times (with no real reason other than to enjoy the crossing) I have rarely heard a Captain/Officer add anything to the voyage that he wouldn't usually do.  For example they do the usual "welcome onboard" announcements aswell as a pre-recorded safety message ,but have never to my knowledge made a trip special in the same way that you have described.  That said we were impressed with Captain McFadyen's words of comfort whilst riding out a Biscay Force 11-12.

Captain Ross sounds like the kind of person who really enjoyed what he did and wanted to make each and every passenger feel welcome - clearly something which is hard to come by these days.  Sometimes you get the impression that the officers in charge only want to do what is required of them, and when their watch is over they head back to the crew mess/cabin.  By the looks of things the "popular" Captains/officers are those who go one step further, perhaps by becoming visible figures for the onboard passengers.

As for bridge visits, it was indeed the twin tower disaster which pulled the plug on those.  However it is still possible to obtain bridge access (usually by writing to the company in advance).  Decisions are entirely at the discretion of the captain in charge and are forbidden during the night with most companies.  Cruise lines I believe have a slightly different policy and operate bridge visits (possibly for a small fee)?

Luc, trust you ;)

The dry weight of pobi is 37851 if I recall correctly.

Anyway, whatever the ratio- we were looking down some 90ft below to this 'little' ship.

Capt Ross sailed under the red ensign, and I do not know if he was a RNR or not- I know one of his chief officers was.

This wasn't the only example of excellent seamanship. The ability to dock such a big ship in the little berth at Bilbao was tricky but how slick he docked her compared to the other skippers is noticable.

I think the length is somewhere near 176. The beam sounds right. Not sure of draught, but probably right.

Yes, RN personnel are quite good. Just their equipment that's c**p

Andy,

You're in the Navy?

Is it really as bad as I'm told. It is absolutely disgusting the way this 'country' treats those who have signed up to safeguard its interests.

Still, one only needed to read a little history to predict in 1997 this would happen. Hate to say I told you all, but 'I told you....'

The RN is an joke, you get treated like a kid, actually to be honest kids can stand up to people if they feel mistreated and not get done for insubordination! I joined up at 18 (im 23 now) and really enjoyed it, first deployment was 3 months in the US which was fantastic.....since then its gone rapidly downhill and ive seen the 'senior service' for what it really is, a corrupt shadow of its former self. Our navy used to be feared and respected, now its a joke, now wonder about 40% of the UK dont actually realise we have one!. Ive made my choice anyhow and leave this December, not going to force myself to do a job which I dont enjoy for an employer I hate.
Yes im afraid it really is that bad, more people leave than join these days...out of the 30 or so lads I went through training with only 2 or 3 remain, and thats after 4 and half years!
Anyway sorry for the mank and moan but I thought I would give an honest answer.

Andy

Hi,
I was on the escort frigate for the Tall Ships race from Torbay (UK) to Lisbon. We had to check on
each of the ships frequently. The sight of all those ships with full sail on was nothing short of
magnificent.

Oh dear... I know a few ex-Navy and a few serving army soldiers (and a NCO) and they say similar. I bet the RAF isn't too pleased either. I know that each of thes chaps is a tough, intelligent and resourceful type- a credit to the country.

I think those tourists from the Navy to Iran whilst not damaging the Navy par se, have certainly brought attention to the problem (just has the sight of 3 'carriers' sitting in Portsmouth drydock month in and month out.

Ironically, I was watching 'the cruel sea' the other day (after reading the excellent book) and what a difference in image.
