SHIP SUNK 100KM OF ROTTERDAM!!
« on: December 05, 2012, 20:37:00 »

A carrier Baltic Ace is sinking on the North sea after an accident with the Coral J (probably the Coral J is the Corvus J). The accident happened 100KM away from Rotterdam.

the coastguard has setup an big rescue operation. It isnt sure if there are people in danger. (both ships dont have AIS anymore)

the sinking vessel is a car carrier that is sailing under the flag of the Bahama's. at around 19.15 hour (dutch time) a containervessel from Cyprus collided with the car carrier.

A helicopter and 7 rescue vessels are underway at this moment 4 ship are at the scene (Corvus J,Panagia,Caroline Essberger and the Kamarno) the 7 ships that are underway are the Friesland,Groningen (both dutch navy),koopmansdank,Zeemandhoop,Antoinette (both 3 KNRM),Menkar (pilot),Grande America.

there are now also 3 helicopters underway (2 from Belgium and 1 dutch one)
it looks like the ferry Pride of Bruges is also setting course to the scene.

I see it but first it was heading to the scene.

A lot of Ambulances from The haque and Rotterdam are heading to Rotterdam-The Haque airport.

the first helicopter is now going to land at Erasmus hospital in Rotterdam the other ones are heading to the airport.

May the 3 sailors rest in peace  :'(

Looking at the AIS track of both vessels, it would appear the Corvus Js' bow collided with the side of the Baltic ace at roughly 14.7(?) knots. The track also indicates that the Corvus J intended to pass astern of the Baltic ace (which was making 18.5 knots at the time of collision)... which may mean that either mechanical or human error are to blame.

The Baltic Ace also had ice-class 1A, so it must have a very substantial collision to cause her to go down.

At first my thoughts are going to the sailors who perished.

You see again that when a ro-ro vessel is hit in its side due to a collision, the car deck gets flooded and the vessel capsizes quickly. Did the Baltic Ace comply to the latest SOLAS-regulations for ro-ro passenger vessels regarding the survivability after a collision on it side?

the CG has stopped searching for survivors reason: they think nobody will be a life right now in the water and it is dark now
