One scenario I have tried with a turntable took an absolute age to get it to line up so I could get the loco on to it and then steadfastly refused to move after that... I gave up as I wasn't sure how to move it in the first place.

You need to pull out the menu on the right edge of the screen to enable seeing the new content in the object menu on the left edge.
If you have trouble, holler and I’ll make a screenshot for you tomorrow.

Pull out the Browser—on the left, and click the small blue thingy below the large blue thingy.
Then you can select the source of the DL item from the properties panel on the right; in this case, HH.
Put green checks opposite the item you want to make available in the browser.

...i seriously hav no XXX idea wat to do.

I gather from that remark that you have not used the Scenario Editor. The bad news is that there is somewhat more work involved in getting a new loco operational in RW than in Trainz. You also need to set up a Driver—even in free roam.

As in Extremes, using the Editors is what separates the men from the boys. The good news is that RW is not nearly so secretive about such details of the game. There is much information available from within the game and on the various forums.

Begin by studying the Creator Manual that you can find on the first Train Simulator 2012 screen:
From the top menu, select Tools & Docs. Under Documents on the left, click the link to Creator Manual.
Sections 4.3 “Placing a Player Train” & 4.4 “Adding a Driver” are what answer your immediate question, but you will need to study other sections to learn the basic moves.
If you ask specific, detailed, questions about anything that gives you trouble, I’ll clarify.

About your language: Using asterisks while leaving your meaning clear will not save you from getting your butt kicked off of the forum.

Yes please don't use language like that Rbsanford, we all know what it means. I have edited your post for you.

I have rain simulator 3 and I can honestly say it's the best train simulator out there. Of course there are still some problems, and what feels like hundreds of expansions can get VERY costly.
