A whale the world largest ship??
« on: July 28, 2010, 23:51:40 »

Hii everybody.
I believe we heard on the news that the "A Whale" is now the worlds largest ship..
She is 340 meters long and has e bean of 60 meters.
I went back too look and saw with my own eyes that berge stahl has a lenght of 342 meters and has a beam of 63 meters..

Now if i hear that A whale is the worlds largest ship that is 340 meters long and berge stahl is 342 meters.
I say that that cannot be right
I say Berge Stahl is now the biggest one, and not a whale.

If theres something that is not right not in the info here please tell me asap..

Kind Regards

It's not really the dimensions of a ship that makes it the largest.
It's all about the space within the ship. Length is thereby very different from space.

And maybe the Berge Stahl has greater dimension than A Whale but maybe is that tanker higher than the Berge Stahl  :)

i see...a whale is an oil tanker but also a bulk carrier..
lets say she is 50/50.
Alto i still prefer berge stahl, cause she has a bigger draft

I thought "A Whale" was the ship used for cleaning up the oil mess in the Gulf..

Hi Ocean Dream,

A ship with the longest length doens't necessary has to be the largest ship. A vessel might be smaller in length, but can have a larger gross tonnage (GT). Technically she would still be the largest ship.

Hi all,

if we talk just about length, the Berge Stahl (nor the A whale) aren't the biggest.

The container ship Emma Maerk is 397m long, and the longest (sold for demolition at this time) was the Knock Nevis (458,45m after modifications). Even the Queen Mary 2 is a bit longer (345m) !

And the biggest ship ever build (The Knock Nevis has become bigger only after modifications) was The Pierre Guillaumat : http://www.aukevisser.nl/supertankers/id38.htm , 414m length.

A "fun" fact is when you read the Pierre Guillaumat was build in 1977 ... And scrapped in 1983 !

a few comparisons : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bateaux_comparaison2.svg

The Pierre Guillaumat was largest for six years?! Why did they scrap a ship that wasn't in service very long? I mean, that ain't right.

Tankers tend not to last all that long. Mainly because they pay for themselves very quickly (Particularly a few years ago, looking back there were so many huge tankers built that were scrapped a few years later). Although now I think the way the economy is; tankers might have slightly longer lives...as companies won't be able to afford new builds like they used to.

I think there are other reasons involved to scrap a vessel so relative shortly after the vessel got in service. Afterall the owner can really start to make money once the mortgage is paid off. I'm not sure about the regulations abroad, but here owners have to pay less tax if they invest their profit in their company (with others words; the company has to pay more tax if they keep the profit at their bank account). I'm not sure of the reasons in case of the Pierre Guillaumat, but the owner might bought her to ditch some money.

The Pierre Guillaumat had been ordered by SHELL France with 3 sisterships just before the petrol crisis. Shell even thought about cancelling the order due to the crisis. Finally, the 4 ships had been delivered, but only one had a decent life (the 3 others were scrapped beetween 1983 and 1986). The fourth, named Prairial, Hellas Fos, Sea Giant, was scrapped in 2005.

Several pictures of the Batilus (one of the 4 sisters), including bridge and engine control room, can be seen here :

Your correct on that there is no more oil coming out of the gulf  :2thumbs:  now they just have to clean it all up but the problem is some of the oil has avaporated which is bad and if it stays in the water to long it will sink to the ocean floor killing all sea life down there  :(

so they need to clean it up faster
