A discussion about engineers and mate's, and Clanky shows up - How suprising!
The UK tried having maroffs a few years ago and most companies found that it didn't work for them although it seems to have worked quite well in Holland.
The big advantages of maroff training is that you can
1. try both deck and engine departments before you decide which route to choose for yourself and
2. whichever route you eventually choose you will have a better understanding of the operation of the ship as a whole which can only be a good thing.
There is no good or bad choice and as much as the two departments enjoy joking about one being better than the other the truth is that on modern ships with smaller crews than ever before the two departments have to work very closely together.
Which one is right for you will depend on a lot of things and it is impossible to advise which one on an internet forum, but whichever department you think you want to be in keep an open mind because when you go to sea you might find that you actually prefer the other.
