Thanks both for you comments.

Great work..  (in some shots the funnels seem a bit orange)

I suppose you're speaking about the screenshots taken at night when the ship is all enlighted? Then that's normal the funnels look orange. If you project a yellow/white light on a red surface, then the resulting color will most likely be orangish, like on this picture:
http://www.coastalshipping.co.uk/207-259-large/ss-united-states.jpg

Of course the ideal would be that the simulator program actually projects lights on objects for a more life like result, but I afraid it's not untill computers are more powerful in order to keep playability ok.

Thank you again for your posts.

Here's an hydrofoils-shuttle, perhaps I may use the hull and foils for a gunship version in the future.
The design is a fictional one, slightly inspired by all these ones sailing in the ex-soviet republics, mainly in the 70s and 80s, plus a dose of modernism, plus a dose of my own design, which is interesting to work out from a pure engineering point of view. She's 35 meters long and can carry about 120 passengers for inter island or short maritime traffic. Max speed will be about 38/40kts.
I've always been interested in these hydrofoil-boats since my childhood, especially when there were more numerous than nowadays and I wanted to build something rather unusual. Also, the sea trials and the dynamic behaviour will be interesting to work out.

I've started about 8 days ago and I've still to complete the pilot house and funnels, to add the masts, and add or modify a few details here and there. There will be a fonctional bridge as well.

Here are some basic renderings, directly from Rhino3D:

No textures or materials yet, just plain colors.
All in all, still a significant way to go before the release.

Thanks all for your comments.

It's up to VSTEP to show an active and concrete interest or not and to value a commercial potential or not of the models presented here in this active projects section of the forum. On top of the models themselves, that interest or lack of from VSTEP is also in relation with the reactions (or lack of) from the members here. We can only suggest our work, do as better as we can, and wait.

Back to this hydrofoils EXPRESS SHUTTLE I: The modelling itself is now completed, at least for the exteriors. Bridge will come later. Texturing and first dynamic testing process will be started shortly, probably next week.

Once again Dom a beautiful looking model.

Just a quick question, are the bollards shown on the side taken from a real life design or from your imagination?  I ask because from an engineering perspective the structure they are sitting on does not look strong enough to take the vertical forces which would be genrated by the boat rolling alongside, you may want to add some extra stiffening.

On the other hand if this is taken from an existing design then someone cleverer than me may have already calculated the stresses involved and I might just be being an old Spambot about it :)

Either way a fantastic looking vessel.

Thanks for the comments Clanky. Now that's a constructive feedback!

I had thought about that as well, but finally didn't bother to make a deeper engineering analysis for that very point. hese structures are mainly there for protecting the foils when manoeuvring or moored alongside a quay. On existng vessels of that kind, they're about like the ones I did, in short, they're not heavy strucutres but rather light ones. In some cases I've seen, the slanted supports under the horizontal platforms have a more open angle (they're more vertical), in some other cases no. But the difference with my design is that, afterward, I've finally decided to put the mooring bollards there for more practicality (but I'm not sure it is thecase or not on some real vessels of that kind). Perhaps I should have not because of the vertical constraints generated by the boat rolling alongside as you've pointed out indeed and I should have leave them on the main body. So the option I have is to either remove them and put them on the deck instead (but the access to the bow is not easy like on several of these real crafts) or to open the angle of metallic supports under these lateral platform structures. I think I'm going to choose the later, or perhaps add another row of supports with open angles there, under the already existing ones for correcting the problem and add some extra stiffening.

So NO... you're NOT being an old Spambot about it!

Thank you for the feedback Clanky. I've examinated a lot of things for this design but obviously I cannot spend to much time and thoughts on everything and some points would need more, what I should have done anyway.
Your observation is a very valid one and I'll add the correction in the final design before the addon release. thank you.

Cheers Dom, I was once on a nw build project were a 40 ton crane was welded directly to the deck with no extra stiffening, I questioned this and was told that the designers had calculated the stresses involved and it was acceptable, I asked what percentage of steel wastage they had allowed for when making the calculations and there was a stony silence, the next day extra stiffening was added below the deck.

They all had fancy computers, I had stood under a few cranes when they were lifting heavy loads!

Ha ha, that's rather funny Clanky! And they were designers...
Fortunately, they've finally decided to quickly listen to you befor a potential serious problem arises.

I've started the first sea trials a few days ago. As you can see, some parts are still missing and there's absolutely no graphic optimization yet, like for instance materials/textures optimization (some will probably be enhanced a bit), neither bump mapping, neither reflections and no smoke or lights. The purpose was just to set the first in-game file structure and dynamic parameters right.

Very slight lift at 12/13kts:

Full planing above 28/29kts, here at max speed of 38/40kts:

Still quite some work to achieve as you can see.
(And as you can see Clanky, the angle of the supports under the mooring plateforms have been opened (+15°) for extra vertical stiffening).

Rbsanford: Thank you for your comments. To answer your question, let say a rather small vessel like this above one would take less than a month (mainly spare time, not full time every day) to be completed, but considering I had to stop it for a while, it now takes far longer than that. To give you a better and more reliable idea, the SS UNITED STATES I had modeled 2 years ago took me about 3 months 2 weeks of often full-time work about 4 or 5 days a week to be completed (it was about a 300-350hrs job I think).

Clanky: Again, thank you very much for your comments and feedback.

After a nearly 2-month long break due to other non-simulator related 3D work to achieve (but still ship related) + a few other reasons, work on this hydrofoils vessel has resumed last week.
Except perhaps for very minor things or textures improvements, I think the exteriors are now completed with the bump-mapping and all the moving parts done as well. Here are the most recent screenshots taken today (details on bomp-mapping are more visible by clicking on the original size screenshots links):
