Projects: Exploration Yacht - Tanker - SS UNITED STATES
« on: April 17, 2010, 14:03:11 »

Hello everbody,

A few weeks ago, after a long break as far as an entirely new project is concerned, I've finally started a new one of an "exploration" yacht. That vessel is meant for long navigation periods, for reaching remote areas of our planet. The hull is ice certified (but not NOT ice breaker so the bulbous bow can be kept for the various benefits it provides) but can be used in any type of places, hot or cold, for quiet luxury sailings or for more adventurous "explorations", as well as in moderately rough seas.

Although she is primarily intented to be for another sim, I post it in this section of the forum since I'd really like to see her in Ship Sim one day. But moderators will of course be free to place it in another section if needed.

Still a lot of things and details to add but I'm begining to see the completion of the modelling job itself. Mapping, texturing and conversion will come immediately after, hopefully very soon.

(Please note, the helicopter Bell Ranger is not mine but just here for presntation purpose).

Best regards,

DVOMarineDesign (Dom).

Hi Dom,

Great to see this new project from you. It looks absolutely stunning. I like this vessel very much already. Excellent stuff, as always.  :2thumbs:

I take it you are aware of, and following, the guidelines to get a ship into ship simulator. So you've placed it in the right board, no worries.  :)

I'm keen to see more of this.

Regards,
Fred

Thank you all for your comments! I'm glad you like her and that's encouraging.

Fred, sure I'd like to see that yacht in Ship Sim some day. I'm of course perfectly aware of the requirements and guidelines for that. I've read them in depth for my previous models, but so far, I lack of the right software for really making that model fully ready for implementation into SS. However, I'm trying to build her with that (and commercial quality) in mind and once I can purchase that (expensive) software, I'll have some additional work to do before sending it to VStep team. So not yet in the current situation, but who knows?... some day...

Here are the latest update with most of he work done on the stern. Except for a very few details there to add, nothing will dramatically change or be added there. No texturing and mapping yet, that work should begin very soon, after the modeling job completion itself, hopefully in a few days.

And the inflatable "zodiac" (my own design) that I will make separately sailable:

Wow, just wow.

Absolutely amazing, both in terms of the design itself and the model.  The only thing that you might want to try is extending the bilge keels aft a little and maybe making them a little less "wide" if they stick out that much in real life they would be very vulnerable to getting ripped off.  But mostly just wow!

What program do you use Dom?

I'd guess 3D Studio Max ?

Thanks a lot to all for your comments.

Clanky, I've seen bilge keels much more proeminents and shorter (longidudinal wise) in other exploration yacht project than the ones above. However, you've pointed out a very valid observation and I was questioning them myself. So I've finally decided to make them less wide and longer. Thank you for the constructive observation then.

VirtualSkypper, I use Rhinoceros 3D for modeling (the above basic renderings are from Rhino) and then Gmax (a 3dsmax lite) for texturing and mapping.

Here's the most recent update with some basic renderings from Rhinoceros 3D, still without textures.
The texturing, mapping and bump-mapping job will begin very soon.

(Please note again the Bell Ranger helicopter is not mine and won't be included in the final package, but just here for representation purpose in these renderings. The small platform will be usable with the default Jet ranger in the other sim).

The inflatable will be separately sailable as well. Bump-mapping has been implemented for reproducing water droplets, chambers, rubbers look, metal and aluminium sufaces, with a touch of wood.

And here's a small rough video of it in operation:

(Select 480p for better quality).

Fantastic job, definitely looks better with the longer bilge keels.

I love how the last shot of the rib actually looks like there are drops of water sitting on it.

Thanks a lot guys for your comments.

I was not able to work on that model during about two weeks but work has resumed 3 or 4 days ago.
I can now say, exterior wise and except for a few details like mainly some domestic objects on tables (crockery, vases, books...) and some purely ornemental ones that I will add at the end of the building and testing in VSF, the model is now completed. Next step is (at last!) the long and tedious NURBS to polygon conversion, then the texturing/mapping process, then followed by the bump-mapping implementation. Then, as far as interiors are concerned, the bridge and main lounge will come. I hope I'll be able to complete all of that, I'm working on it.
Here are the most recent screenshots with several things done since my last post like ceilings, lamps, large canvas-covered RIBs, 2 doors, anchors and a few details and corrections.

Best regards,

ALL WHAT I CAN SAY IS:WELL DONE!! BRILIANT, WONDERFUL, EXCELENT!!!!!!!!

THESE YACHT IS THE GREATEST THING I EVER SEEN!!

That yacht would be the greatest thing in the SSE description "sailing from cold seas, to tropic places" That yacht is the main word for Ship Simulator Extremes.

-That yacht is great for all envirorments in the Ship Simulator!
-That yacht it's very nice & luxury!
-That's the only vessel type what Ship Simulator does not have!
-That yacht is perfect for sailing in all weather conditions, from calm seas to perfect storms!
-That yacht is exotic and it is the right way to make the game EXTREME!
-That yacht is just THE RIGHT thing what Ship Simulator NEEDS THE MOST!

That yacht is great, it's just great, and i can't wait the moment when i'm going to sail that yacht, because i bellive that VSTEP is smart and that thay wile include that yacht in the game if you let them!

Ohh, it looks so great!

I'm expecting some pictures when you create the interior and the bridge, it sounds great, and very luxury as you are saying, hope it will be wonderful and luxury as the exterier is!

One more time WELL DONE!

Kind regards.
Captain. Mitch
