Missing smoke from 4th chimney of Titanic
« on: January 26, 2010, 01:15:45 »

Hi all :)

While I was sailing the Titanic at full speed doing a good 22.54 knots jkust around them Thai islands, I saw that there was no smoke coming out of the 4rth chimney is this normal?

Because I am quite sure that the real R.M.S. Titanic did have smoke coming out of this last chimney, unless it has a different purpose?

anyways some details about this would be nice :)

Peace.

The only time there would be smoke from the fourth funnel would be if the deck chairs stored inside caught fire.

The game is accurate as the 4th funnel was used for ventilation and was a "dummy" to improve looks

Royal Mail Steamer Titanic was built with three ventilating smokestacks and WSL (White Star Line) decided to build a fourth dummy smokestack to make her look very beautiful and the fourth stack was for storage (Reason for structure below the 4th stack) for the deck chairs and to used for oxygen to the engines (Men who work there) to help keep the ship move with healthy men and turbines. So the 4th Stack was for decoration.

Mkay that sounded rather odd, never knew it would be a dummy pipe rofl, well that explains it then :)

Thx for the info people.

Hi there Gold Leader,

It isn't unusual to hear about dummy funnels...They were mainly added on Ocean Liners to help balance out their 'profile'.

For example, the SS Normandie:

They later removed the stack nearest the stern, there are a couple of photo's lying around somewhere...I'll try find them.

(apologies in advance for going slightly off-topic!)

Nice to see there's still a pair of compass binnacles on top of ST CLARE's wheelhouse.

I thought compass binnacles were made redundant due to advances made in marine technology, i.e. GPS system, digital compass etc.

Slighty Off Topic remarks after the topic is pretty much resolved, are fine, mate!  :)

My guess would be that, in the event of possible faillure of the modern equipment, some good old backup wouldn't go amiss.

Or maybe they were just to lazy to take 'em down, or it was too costly, since they are not really in the way or anything.  :)

It's still mandatory to have a magnetic compass under the SOLAS law  :)

After the collision, as Titanic sank, a number of men from the boiler room were able to escape through the fourth funnel..

Ah okay that's cool then haha cool to know people :)
The P&O ferry is my fav , it's manoeuvrable and easy to turn in tight places for such a large vessel :)

No so long ago I was on the Bergens Fjord from bergen to Hirtshals, this was a same type of Ferry class as the P&O version in Ship Sim 2K8 :)

here a pic of it which I made, I also have more pics of the bridge, but I'll post these in a new topic :)

That pic was taken the day before dparture  8) The trip took 22 hurs it was the best ferry experience in my entrie life it was truely awesome, we hit a nice speed of 21,5 knots :D

Apologies for being another person to go offtopic

Gold Leader, any more details about this trip? I assume it is Fjord Line? Sounds an interesting point for future holidays (due to the total incompetence of a large 'British' ferry company, I am reviewing my travel plans...

A Q for anyone else- with the ending of the POBI service is this, together with the Ireland-France and Britain- Santander about the longest crossing for a ferry service?

Yeah that's Fjord Line indeed a norwegian company only our ship was registred in Hirtshal, Danmark, Danish ship Norwegian company that was funny though.

The service was very good, we also had a tour of the ship also went to the bridge and had a chap with the Co-Pilot , dunno the real name of this person, in dutch it's eerste stuurman, he's just under the Captain.

I have to admit there was alot of computers on that bridge, it's not like them old bridges you'd see  as back in the end 70's to mid 80's heh.

time has changed alot and even them big ships have been digitalized alot, the Bergensjord did not even need a tug boat, it coud do everything by it's self, this was an interesting event and experience.

The Crow's Nest was possioned behind the bridge instead of in front of it, that mast with the bell in it, the flags attatched to it and them radar devices and such.
