Trying to find an HP laptop in the 95** range. With an AMD Turion processor. Tried all the usual retailers but they have discontinued in favour of intel chip.

Anyone know of a good HP retailer? Must upgrade this old calculator of mine.

Or can anyone make a good recommendation.

Must have:
dedicated graphics memory but still able to borrow main memory as needed.
must be AMD processor
Must err... be able to decode RF signals for when bored

Anyone have any good recommendations...

Dell has some nice computers. But I dont think they have AMD processors. To be honist with you I cant find and places that sell computers with AMD processors.

I've found a few but they seem to be confined to lower spec machines. There was a nice model available bt was too slow to go get one and they sold out; the replacement is an intel version.

Joking aside, I am on a P4 laptop and find it far slower than the athlon equivelent clock speed.

Sorry Stu, but the Core 2 Duo changed everything. I'd rather have a Core 2 Duo than my AMD Athlon X2 64 4600+.

I was never an Intel fan...until the Core 2 Duo. Especially now the 45nm versions are coming out!

I had a P4 2ghz (my first PC - 2002) and it was slower than a 900mhz AMD equivalent

That was a P4. I can assure you that the equivalent (and even a 'worse' model) Core 2 Duo would wipe the floor with my Athlon X2, not to mention the reduced power requirements.

I have an Athlon 64 (not X2) now, I just can't get past that initial Intel hiccup

intel is OK, but LIKE FOR LIKE CLOCKSPEED the AMD will, IMHO, run rings around the intel. but there will be fans of both.

So, Mr Orinoco, do you know where I can get an AMD HP 95** series laptop?

Don't have a clue Stu, sorry. I'd agree with you about clock speeds on every Intel processor except the Core 2 Duo - it literally is the best on the market.

That annoying jingle that they play on every tv/radio advert with their stuff in it. Get rid of that advert and I MIGHT think aout DOWNgrading to an intel box.

Incidentally, ever gone into pcworld to speak to their 'resident expert' and explained that to the little kid behind 'technical support desk' and he has explained that he IS the expert...

Then you have to explain to him the basic, fundamental operation of a particular piece of hardware before he suggests 'trying this phone line, sir. Or if you speak to gavin on friday, he might have an idea.'

LOL, that jingle reminds me of an '80's doorbell with 50 billion in-built tunes

I love confusing those Tech 'experts', it's funny to watch them squirm as you take them on a merry stroll down 'confusion lane'

When I first got a laptop (after the Amiga RIP) It totally died 8 days after I bought it. Their policy is if that happens in the first week, they swap it immediately- if not... goes away for repair...

After explaining the meaning of 'not fit for purpose' to both the assistant, the manager and on the phone to head office, and getting nowhere... I headed east for a mile and went to the county court. filled the paperwork for a summons... went back to the retailer and said 'a replacement please. now... or I shall lodge this with the court in precisely... 8 seconds

so I walked out with my new replacement laptop... and a £20 voucher for my trouble.

The moral of this story: Never give your enemy a chance.

I haven't used an Intel since the Pentium I (it ran at 133Mhz...). Since then I've always used AMD. I had an AMD XP Athlon (then another), then an AMD Athlon 64, now I run an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+.

To give you some idea, my processor took 3 times longer to calculate 1 million iterations of PI than my friend's Core 2 Duo. Not only are they faster, they use less power and are more efficient. Especially now the 45nm series are coming out!

I'd LOVE to get a Core 2 Duo, but being stuck on a 939 motherboard, I've literally got the best processor I can have. If you want to stick with AMD, fine, but make sure you wait until the AM3 socket and associated processors are out.

I had a similar argument in 'Next' once. They insisted they could only issue a 'credit note'. I soon reminded them that under Consumer Protection legislation, we're more than entitled to a cash refund for faulty merchandise.

Well, according to the Sale Of Goods Act 1979, which you are obviously referring to

If you can prove that there was a fault with an item when you first purchased it, you have a legal right to a FULL refund or replacement (no questions asked).  This statement is apparently valid for an 'unspecified' period of time, so it is a case of check the retailers policies and the law regarding this kind of situation

As for your issue, you were obviously right in this case, as was proven by the retailers reaction

Absolutely, no-one is ever legally required to accept a credit note, most retailers do this to 'make sure' that you continue to shop at their stores.  IF you do accept a credit note, always make sure it's NOT dated (expiry)
