Which ship was it? It has to be night before the lights are lit.

The lights will better with the new patch - I hope!  ;) We are working on it but I am not sure if it all can be fixed before the release.

I thought all the ships had lights at night. At least all the ones I've seen.

PoR and the smaller ones have, Eagle and Jet have. Don't know about the others.

The Titanic does have lights...

Take a look at the Titanic screenshots topic:

There is one shot show the sternlight and here is another one showing the masthead lights and a sidelight.

No, they've just got their curtains closed.

Last time I was in a cabin at the front (3 decks below bridge) we were instructed to keep curtains closed at night- whether to avoid reflection and upset the watchman or to avoid giving off the appearance of confusing navigational lights to oncoming ships, I don't know.

Mr Groeenegaard- is this normal procedure?

Are you kidding? At night, cruise ships are lit up like Christmas trees.

Well, there was a great big notice about 12" wide.

Queried it and got told it was correct. I can only think that it is because of reflections on the forecastle that upest the bridge.

Maybe at the front, but the side cabins and public areas are very bright indeed.

Yeah, and all the passengers can see in the dark...

All your passenger lights!!  :P  :D

Have you ever read the THE INTERNATIONAL REGULATIONS FOR PREVENTING
COLLISIONS AT SEA? You should do that...  ;)

PART C. LIGHTS AND SHAPES
Rule 20
Application
(a) Rules in this Part shall be complied with in all weathers.
(b) The rules concerning lights shall be complied with from sunset to sunrise, and during such
times no other lights shall be exhibited, except such lights as cannot be mistaken for the lights
specified in these Rules or do not impair their visibility or distinctive character, or interfere with
the keeping of a proper look-out.

From a distance, most lights can be mistaken for the lights in the rules, and without radar and AIS the visual look-out was of even more importance than today. Even though films show lots of lights on the Titanic, I do not think that the crew would have blend themselves in such a large scale...

if there is land behind a ship with lots of lights and if it is far away you can easily think that those lights is actually a small city

Funny enough... No. ;)

Did do a RYA course for sailing yachts years back and it was pointed out that a large ship at distance with lots of lights can look similar to a small light on a much nearer ship. Having read the marine accident report into the sining of 'ouzo' ( a small sailing vessel) by P&O Pride of Bilbao I can see why so many regs appear to have little importance until one sees the real thechnical reason for it.

I think they were more worried about those right at the bow, under the bridge.

Maybe if they catch you, they keel-haul you? That will stop repeat offenders :)

In practice we switch off the deck lights and black out the front window below the bridge. Stu, we don't keel-haul passengers anymore even though some of them certainly deserve such a ride...  ;D

In the past, it was not unusual that the captain gave the order to kill all the lights at the front and front quoaters of the ship.
It was indeed done for navigational reasons not to be mistaken for anything els but a ship, the officers on board kept a good watch inside the ship to be sure the curtans or blinds were closed, and stayed that way until the captain desided otherwise.
The more traffic they encountered the more these procedures were issued.
These days there is still a regulation about these procedures, although with modern navigational instruments you have a better view of whats around you (radar+ais+vhf) nevertheless, i still hear occasionally of Captains to order a "lights out"

If I'm annoyed by lights from a window I simply grab the phone and call the room directly or get a stewardess to kindly ask the passengers to draw the curtains.  :)

I don't think that will be a good idea since the windows often are used as secondary escape routes...  ::) and people will feel locked up. But of course, my job will be easier as I would be able to skip all the related phone calls...  ;)
