Such loading is because:

that's a catamaran ferry, what else to say!
there were no available ferries at that day...
the trip was very cheap at that day.
of way too many cars than the captain expected.
the captain weren't aware of the kind of cargo at all!
they're trying to achieve the most ridiculous car loading on the ship to be in the Guinness World Records book.
of some insane...
I have no idea about this yet!
captain was very kind after the pint...

After weeks of discussing the weird car loading on a ship, now let's move to something different...

So, any thoughts about this?

It's designed for going through very small tunnels on a mountain railway

What would they have done if their tunnels had been a different shape?

Probably this is the most weird train I've ever seen - the German "Schienenzeppelin" (Kruckenberg's train).  ;D

That first picture makes it look like the Japanese Bullet Train

This is an interesting one - a some kind of electric-steam-powered-locomotive thingy.

Weird! I've seen a diesel/steam combination. It is great if you don't turn off the steam long before switching off the diesel, as it is likely to condense in the cylinder and blow your pistons out when you re-start it.

Is that an electric powered steam engine???

I actually think it is a cat testing loco- one destined for scrap being used with a dummy paperclip to test the wires.

Could be also one of the experiments to reduce the coal consumption on steam engines.

joking aside, wm- it is a testing loco for new catenary. Its West German, I think- possibly Austrian or Italian, Swiss, French, Belgian, Luxembourg, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Estonian, Bulgarian or Spanish.

Or maybe its from somewhere else  :-\

EDIT: It has DR on the cab, so its either pre-1945 or East German.

EDIT2: Did the Germans have overhead wires pre 1945- I think only a few in Euroland, so my money is 1950s East Germany

EDIT3: just had it from the horses mouth... IT IS an electric fired steam engine... See? Even I'M wrong sometimes- I hope that makes you feel better

You beat my edit3.

Yes, My Dad worked with some when on a European exchange. Remember that steam was much more efficient than early large electrickery motors, but the coal usage wasn't so efficient.

A flaming big kettle for making the coffee... needs a train to carry it around.

At least there were one good reason:

Due to war conditions coal was in short supply, but hydro-electricity remained plentiful. Therefore some of these small steam locomotives were converted to raise steam by electric heating.

Ever heard of Barnes Wallace and the Bouncing bomb?

That's true WM. But early electrickeryfication didn't work properly, which is why they didn't make 'proper' electrickery engines.

OK. I'm not sure what point you are making. Branson is rich, yes. Powerful, yes. Branson (imagine being named after a pickle!) doesn't really own it, although I doubt he is totally skint. A bloke called Brian Souter and his pals own half of Virgin trams.
