Queen Victoria bow markings?
« on: July 27, 2009, 18:05:36 »

Hi guys, while looking at this picture of the Queen Victoria, I noticed a marking on her bow in the bottom right corner of the screen.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/01/IMG_4119.JPG
It looks like it represents the fact that she has a bulbous bow, is that what it means? I have never noticed it on any other ship before. If someone could answer that, please tell me. I also have ruled out the fact that it could mean bow thrusters, because the bow thruster markings are totally different. If anyone could tell me, that would be great.

Yup, you and SA are right, that's the symbol for the bulbous bow. A couple more examples:

On the subject of symbols, I have a question about one. I've noticed this on a few larger ships, does anybody know what this one means?

It's a good guess Fred, but POH has 1 on either side (only 1 per side, unlike that QM2 picture above) and they are forward of the lifeboats  :-\

Maybe where tugs should go, but don't they normally say "Tug" with an arrow pointing down for that?

I could be mistaken, but it looks like a stabiliser. Could it be an indicator for marking the position of the stabilisers?

As a place on hull where the tug can push there're signs like  TUG , T  or  "TUG" with an arrow (like those you see on Latitude).

Yep TFM those markings on QM2 are stabilisers.

I have a poster of her on my wall which is a side view of her, these two marking are directly above the stabilisers. :)

Obviously Cunard are preparing her for war...

Man the torpedoes...

Sorry, can't help you much, the circle looks a bit like a bow thruster or maybe a rotatable azimuth pod, and at a guess the torpedo represents the static azimuth pod?

I'm sure that means that Fred and his buddys were out having a little fun, or maybe, it might mean that they are azipods. What one seems more logical though?

I think the top symbol represents her aft revolving azipod..
The other is her fixed bow azipod..

Now I'm confused, just checked out Nathan's pictures, and there are clearly three symbols on the bow..
So I guess you're right WM..But the azipods are for propulsion of course

If I may help...

QM2 has 3 bow thrusters,

and hasd four azipods,. The azipods are all located on the stern, in a square formation. Two will be revolving, the other two fixed

I thought they all were revolving.  ???  Sorry, I'm not very educated in QM2, so I could sound a bit weird at times. :P

The fixed azipod can't be an azipod then.

Funny, the picture you show has them as all rotating azipods, and not any non rotating pods...

I'm not so convinced about that picture's accuracy.
A) I am positive that QM2 has sheer
B) I think that bulb is not shaped correctly
I know they are small things but if they are wrong, so could other things?
