Hmm...

This will probably make it easy...

The owner recently stated that ferry users were smelly lorry drivers and drunks, and didn't want his cruise passengers mixing with them...

You were right.. It was the Kogane Maru.    Company was Kansei Kisen KK.. :)

Cause:Sunk by mine four miles off the Greek island of Kea in the Kea Channel
sorry not sure if cause is true but i do know that
the sinking got something to do with world war 1

My ships answer is actually closer to today and closer in year. It was the Edmund Fitzgerald of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company and a main hatchway caved in flooding the holds and breaking the ship in half. I was saying a ship that sank around this time, meaning the date.
