American Tug - WIP
« on: November 28, 2008, 22:58:43 »

hi guys,

I have been experimenting lately with 3D modelling and I'm now getting the basics sorted. I have been working on this boat for a while now, based (not acturately) on an american tug which was kindly suggested by Master Captain.

Link here (http://www.americantugs.com/at49.htm).

I intend to get this model completed, and as soon as I have enough detail in the model, I might do some quick renderings.

Hope you like the model everyone, and please positive cristism please, people work hard on these models as I've found out!!

Thanks!

By the way if anyone has any ideas on how to improve the model, PLEASE let me know. I'm new at this kind of stuff and need help along the way :)

Hi CS,

Very good start! Good job.  ;D

I'm not the one to give you tips on modeling really, since I only made a few things with Sketchup.. heh.. But I could give you the guidelines that VSTEP has set for possible SS addons. Perhaps these guidelines are a good help, this early in the proces. Hope it proves helpful!

Regards,
Fred

Hi guys,

Thanks for the comments. I've reworked the hull somewhat now, so you will see a slight change in appearence in the next screen (following shortly).

Minime, I'm using Hexagon 2 by Daz 3D. It's a professional program, so I may even be able to contact VSTEP at some advanced step in the build.

At the moment, I'm just learning at I'm going and hopefully I can get this model to a decent stage. Once I have a few things in place (such as windows and a couple of doors) I'll do some renderings :)

Edit: Sorry didn't give my thanks to Fred for finding the guidelines for me. I'd already searched the guidelines and have read most of that PDF. It makes sense though even with a basic knowledge of 3D design.

Here's a preview of the new hull. It's been slightely re-shaped, not sure if anyone can tell though  ;D

Hello CaptainSpencer,
Looking at http://www.americantugs.com/at49/profile.htm , it seems that American Tug 49' has a hard chine and a different hull form, with transom and a skeg/keel.
Also, the hull sides seem to be more vertical, and a V bottom almost flat at the stern.
Good luck,  :)
Luc

Edit: Have a look at this model, although smaller, but a hull form perhaps closer to the ATug 49'

Thanks for that information LucAtC, like I said I'm still new to this and now I look at the model you are indeed correct.

Infact, the example you shared with me has made me think perhaps I should start on boats on a similar size /style.

Do you have any tips on the best way to acheive the results on your example? I have trouble getting the hull exactly how I like it :(

Thanks,

Although there could exist differences in concept for hull design between your CAD program and Delftship, the techniques are enough similar for you to use Delftship 3.20 free version easily. You can download Delftship and one of the many example design files, and use them as a base for your own design.
It will be of course fair to give credit to the author of the design if you use it (e.g. based on Delftship Design 249). You will first need to register yourself to get access to the download sections and the forum.
There is also a manual as helpfile, a tutorial, a forum and enough resources to finally export the design to your 3D program. If you cannot import DXF 3D meshes, you will have to resort to unhandy offsets and textfiles, but it will not be the end of the world, and you will have a nice hullform, with correct hydrostatics and realistic water resistance values, anyway in a correct order of magnitude.
Optimizing the underwater part will not be necessary, but try to look at photographs of similar hulls and to keep your design as close as possible to the model you have chosen, the size being less important than the proportions.
Good luck,
Luc

Not only do I love the looks of American and Nordic Tugs I think this model is heading in a great direction.  Take it from another expert modeler and fellow American Tug lover. ;)

Thanks for your replies!

I'm no great modeller for sure, but I am trying my best with the semi-pro programs I have. The problem I'm facing is the model complexity. If you look at the screenshot above, you will see they VERY basic net for the hull.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks I can adapt into my model to help me get a better shape?

Many thanks,

Thank you  ;D

I wouldn't go as far as saying I'm a great modeller, as there are far more people that do a job 100 times better than I. However, I do try my hardest and have developed a new technique for building hulls.

Watch this space!  :)

Thanks J3nsen!! I'm hoping to start on the deck soon, although having being so close to the big day, I've not got much time to sit around having a play  :-\

Any suggestions?
