Remote Controlled Steam Powered Ship
« on: August 29, 2008, 22:16:18 »

As many of you have seen ever since my recent trip to mystic Seaport and on the Sabino Seam Ship I have become more of a steam lover.  So what I'm trying to get to is that I'm going to build my own steam powered Remote Controlled Ship.  I just bought this Light Weight Oscillating Steam Engine Kit  I also have a whistle on the way and I'm machining a boiler.  All gauges will also be hand made.  This should be a slightly easier and more entertaining project than my last thoughts of an RC zeppelin. ;D

This isn't the actual one I bought but it is very close, mine is bigger. ;)

I would love some extra help with techniques on how to design and construct a good water tight hull that will hold up to 10-20 pounds of equipment on board.  I have a feeling that there are a few people on this forum that can lend me a hand. :)

Thanks for the future help,
   The Lord of The Steam Locomotion.

Hi Llamalord,

I can help you on this one, i'm into RC boating, although my tugs run under electric engines (12V) i do know a bit about steam.

You ask about the hull? well, if your a beginner, its probably best just to get a hull thats already made (factory molded). Or if you really want it to be hand made, i'll show you what you need to do :)

I'll send you a PM on what you need to do Llamalord, as it will be quite long! ;)

I owe you one anyway for answering my question about Deadliest Catch Alaskan Storm :D ;D

Llama Lord, You gotta be carful with those, They are veary easy to distroy, Too much boiler pressure can make it explode and if you let it run out of water you can burn it up. also you have to clean out the ash from inside the boiler. ;)

Boiler = $120+

Engine = $80

Gauges = ~$50

Piping = ~$20

Boat hull = ?

Other estetics = ~$100

Total = ~470$ :-\

I think it will be worth it. ;D

I'm going to build a bell bottom hull and I hope to make it out of wood but more likely light weight metal frame and a wood shell.

I'm hoping this will turn out to be something like the Sabino in the way of a 1910 passenger steam ship.

Hey, I was working some more on the boiler today and I now have a sufficaint steam source, But until I get the boiler and piping all put together I'm going to test the system with a large compressor (0-350 PSI) I can't wait for my engine to arrive. According to the estimate it should be here tomarrow, but it's a holiday so hopefully Tuesday. I'll send in some pictures of the set up and engine later then. ;)

Nope I'm in it for the steam. ;)

I've been thinking and there is one other thing I cant figure out about this design. Maybe you guys have some ideas.

The speed of the boat will be controlled by a valve between the boiler steam pipe and the engine input. When the valve is open all the way all steam will be thrust into the engine and out the euxaust. When it's closed the pressure will build up until the pressure release valve is triggered and it will slowly release the steam and keep it controlled.  What I can't figure out is what kind of actuator to use to open and close the 'Throttle valve'. :-\

Hay guys I fund a picture of almost the exact steam engine I bought.
The only differences are that mine is blue and the fly wheel is at the bottom.

Because it's some where near my Lake's boat ramp at the Quinsigamond US postal service center...  ...or it's about 20 feet from me out side my garage but I haven't looked yet because if it's not there I have to walk all the way down my driveway to the mail box. :P

I'm gunna' go looky. ;)
