Title: Screen recorders
Post by: Shipaddict on May 11, 2007, 17:56:15
Hey everyone,
On the old forum, I did a post asking what was the best screen recorder. I tried alot of them but the graphics in shipsim were really bad. Someone said they think it's lack of Ram. Is it this? please help!

Not really, its the software. I usually use fraps. I have used it and have recorded a high quality video. I reccomend uploading the video file to a website and have people download it instead of posting it on youtube or google video(the video turns into bad quality) and that might be your problem. So yeah, fraps is the way to go. 8)

Oh. I was recommended by Pjotr to get Camtasia because they use it but the graphics are bad on that aswell. :-[

I use Hypercam 2. On a scale of 1-5, 5 being the best, i rate the quality about a 4. Go to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfufZNb4kNM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfufZNb4kNM) to see a video in Virtual Sailor using Hypercam 2, the video was taped by me. KM

Really good! Do you have a high amount of RAM or not? I've got 768 MB. What's the website for hypercam please?

Thanks!

Nice vid! :)

I know fraps and Camtasia. Both can do the job very well. The problem is perhaps you have a too slow PC or your settings are not good enough.

ok here is the link for Hypercam 2 http://esd.element5.com/product.html?productid=530690&affiliateid=72782 (http://esd.element5.com/product.html?productid=530690&affiliateid=72782) just look for the download demo icon, or you can buy it too. The Demo version, which i have is just like the normal one except it has a little unregistered hypercam 2 in the upper left corner. My Ram i'm not sure of i have to look, I have 1.5 gb memory and 300 gb hard drive, 920 Intel dual core processor, and a NVIDIA GeForce 6200SE Graphics card. KM

I didn't notice the small icom on the left in your vid.

I've tried to do  a video in shipsim with hypercam but it only recorded the menu and not the boat. >:(

Can you record shipsim with hypercam?
Title: Re: Screen recorders
Post by: Master Captain on May 15, 2007, 20:34:43
i just tried recording in ship sim with the hypercam too, it recorded the ship for me but it was choppy and things kept popping up. So i don't know what i will do, it works in Virtual sailor. KM
Title: Re: Screen recorders
Post by: cargohauler on May 15, 2007, 21:42:36
Shipsim is newer than virtual sailor...so there could be somewhat different technology. I reccomend fraps. Like I said, any video on youtube or google is a little distorted. Just upload it to a filehost and offer the link to ppl. It works much better 8)

Hiya :)

I agree totally Cargohauler, Fraps is indeed the best package I've used for capturing footage :)

I would suggest 'buying' a good editor for post-production though, free ones are ok, but as the old saying goes.....'you get what you pay for'  ;)

I agree to I would not use any other screen recorder.  :D
The only thing that gets on my nerves with fraps is when you play it it always has www.fraps.com at the top. ;D

Master Captain...lets keep in mind you were using a demo. I do not think they will put all their efforts and features in the demo as the payware version.

I dont have a fraps thingy at the top of my movies, so I think you can turn it off.
Title: Re: Screen recorders

Full fraps: No logo, full quality and a really long time for records.
Title: Re: Screen recorders
Post by: [RWP]DJM on May 16, 2007, 22:14:25
Hiya :)

For those that don't already know, Fraps uses uncompressed video for it's captures.  This can put a strain on system performance, when I was capturing my last movie footage (Battlefield 2), I had over 100gb of captures.......my final movie was 4m 50s long.

Expect big files if you use the full version of Fraps guys ;)

There are other capture programs out there that compress the video files, like Growler Guncam (http://www.growlersoftware.com/) for example.  I have only ever used Fraps, so I have no idea what the other programs are like, may be worth a try though ;)

Hiya :)

There seem to be 2 different versions of this software, I downloaded and tested the wrong one at first ::)

This one only captures images, not video:

Easy Screen Capture 2 (http://www.longfine.com/)

This one captures Video:

Easy Screen Capture Video 2 (http://www.easyscreencapturevideo.com/)

I did download this one also and tested it, seems a little awkward.  I still prefer Fraps ;)

All the games ive ever had Ive used hypercam 1-did me fine. havnt actually tried hypercam 2 but sure its just as good if not better. Fraps and camtasia are good, but again suck up the MB like u wouldnt believe. i have macthware screencorder-does anyone know how i can get that to work with SS?

Thanks, Britannic.

I've been using Fraps very successfully for several years.  It provides excellent quality video capture of games with anywhere from 25 to 60 Frames Per Second.  Granted, the files can get rather large but I use Windows Movie Maker to condense the file size considerably without any appreciable loss of quality.  I've successfully uploaded condensed Fraps movies of Ship Sim and other games to Youtube and Photobucket.  Just checked their website fraps.com and it currently is selling the program for $37 USD, with free updates.

Well, I was lucky enough to know someone who had a copy, so I just installed then gave it back, but how much is it anyway?

Is fraps paypal? As I'm only using the demo version but really want it and if its PP, then I'm 100% for it!

Thanks, sky.

Not sure about the trial, it is limited I believe.  On the full version, you press F9 to recotd whilst in-game ;)

Make sure you choose a location for your captures too :)

Nothing at all?    Try this, click the FPS settings in Fraps and choose a corner to display the FPS number.  When capturing is working, this number will change colour (not sure what colour as I'm colourblind).

This should give you an indication as to whether everything is working correctly ;)

Hmm.....let me think......

Can't be a codec issue because Fraps uses it's own .dll for uncompressed video.  Just in case though, you could try this if you haven't already ;)

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

Have you tried the Tech support pages on the Fraps site:

Eelkon

Lag whilst recording is caused by a lack of system resources (RAM, graphics, etc.)

If your system is on the minimum spec, you will have problems, I also get a little lag whilst recording, but if you play about with the settings, you can reduce this to a barely noticable glitch ;)

For example, I don't record the sound, only video as I make all my videos to look like Music videos (Except the container loading one I did) :D

Hi,

i have Fraps one week. my Anti-Virus(Kaspersky anti-virus personal) reports that FRAPS is a backdoor.

A backdoor in a computer system (or cryptosystem or algorithm) is a method of bypassing normal authentication or securing remote access to a computer, while attempting to remain hidden from casual inspection. The backdoor may take the form of an installed program (e.g., Back Orifice), or could be a modification to a legitimate program.
i hope that i warn you enough.

Hiya :)

That would depend on where you got it from, the official site is always the best place to get software ;)

www.fraps.com

I have never heard of Fraps causing an issue with ANY Virus Checker before, so I can only assume it's the Virus Checker at fault to be honest or the version you got is infected (if you didn't get it from the official site) :-\

I dont have a fraps thingy at the top of my movies, so I think you can turn it off.

Sorry to bring up an old topic but I too have tried using Fraps but the graphics are very slow on it. I was unable to record anything using Fraps and it was fairly ****. I thought fraps would have been good.

I've used hypercam2 but it's extremely slow. Anyone know why it record so slow??

Edited for language, DJM.

EDIT: Sorry, did not think when I wrote that  :(

Usually, I would say 'settings'.  I use Fraps and don't record sound, except on my 'Container Loading' movie that I did.  I do create music videos though, so I don't need sound.

My settings for Fraps are 25fps (30 on some games), full size, no cursor.  If you want to speed things up, try the 'no sync' option, but I would advise having a slow-motion function in your editing package, because this can produce footage that is a little faster than it should be ;)

Also, try authoring the video to a separate drive by altering Fraps folder setting, this is what I do ;)

Hi DJM,

I cannot find the 'sync option' you mentioned. I have adjusted all the settings to reflect yours but am still unable to record any movies. I have moved the source folder to my slave HDD and set a HotKey of F5 but still no luck.

Any Ideas??

The 'No Sync' option should be on the Movies tab, bottom-right corner, just underneath 'no cursor'.

When you say "still unable to record any movies". what do you mean exactly, you can't record any movies at all?  Officially, you should be getting some kind of result, Fraps uses uncompressed video and only requires it's own plugin for capturing.  Have you tried setting screen to 'Half Size' in Fraps options?

There is another program called Growler Gun Cam that allows capturing, but I personally didn't like it.  That one uses plugins that you have installed, but may put more of a strain on your PC because it compresses video whilst capturing.

Regards.

I've also had great success with Fraps in recording videos of games and simulations, some of which I've posted here in the Media section.  You can download it from fraps.com for $37 USD, and it's very powerful, versatile, and easy-to-use software.  After capturing a video, I then use Windows Movie Maker (free from Microsoft) to condense the file (without a loss of quality) so that it's easily uploadable to Youtube or Photobucket.
