I was talking about P&O, the company, not Pride of Dover/Calais.
But it also applies to GB's hopes of winning the World Cup.

Brand new and it's already covered in rust. You don't get this with hovercraft...
Mostly because they're either made of wood, aluminium or fibreglass.

And the fact that she was subject to snow for the past 12 months

it does seem a little bare
but its their choice and they prefer a dover-calis ferry that looks familiar to hull ferries

Bye Bye Pride of Dover :'(
Pride of Dover Bows Out
09/12/2010
The Pride of Dover bows out of service in mid-December after more than twenty years on the Dover-Calais route for P&O Ferries.
Staff at the company will mark the end of an era when the ship makes its final return sailing from Dover at 23.55hrs on 14 December. Among the crew will be members of staff who collected the ship from Bremerhaven, Germany, when it was launched in 1986. They include Nigel Davies, Operations Manager and Simon Johnston, Customer Services Manager. Nigel said: “The Pride of Dover is one of the most successful cross-Channel ferries ever and has carried getting on for 35 million passengers in her time. We’ve all got some great memories of working on her but now we’re looking to the future and the exciting arrival of our new ships next year.â€
The Pride of Dover was launched on 20 September 1986 and entered service from Dover under the command of Captain John Martin, now retired, on 2 June 1987. She was followed into service shortly after by sister ship the Pride of Calais. The pair cost £85 million to build and they were the largest ferries to operate on the Dover Strait up to that time. On arrival they were described by onlookers (lining the cliffs above the Eastern Docks) and staff alike as ‘jaw-droppingly big’.
Since then, she has completed more than 2,000,000 miles during her 24yrs of service on the Dover-Calais route – the equivalent of travelling to the moon and back five times!
In January 2011 the Spirit of Britain will enter service on the Dover-Calais route, replacing the Pride of Dover. It is the first of two huge new ferries being delivered to P&O Ferries at a cost of €360 million and will offer double the carrying capacity of its predecessor.
The introduction of the Pride of Dover and her sister ship the Pride of Calais marked a new era of ferry travel and that is why they have served the company so well. Judging by the reaction of everybody who has visited the Spirit of Britain in Finland, our two new ships are set to take expectations to a new level just as their predecessors had 24yrs

Pride of Dover's final crossings
-
Final Crossing (the last crossing)
will be sailing from Dover at 23.55hrs on 14 December
the last time we will be seeing her in Dover :(
Great times she had at dover but times have past and now its time for rest.
-
Will the old ferries by scrapped or taken over by an other ferry line?
-
Its not known at the moment
-
Floating boxes. Prefer the look of Rodin and Berlioz. Still, I'll never travel on them. Not unless they're taken over by another ferry company.
-
lol
They are closely related to the Rodin/Berlioz though..
Maybe half sisters or cousins...

Update:
Photo Update – December 2010
23/12/2010
STX Europe, Finland. Normally I’d look to amaze you with stories of how temperatures in the yard have plumeted to -25, but with the artic weather we are currently experiencing here in the UK, there will be a few of you who currently have very little sympathy for our Finnish friends!
So instead, lets focus on the ships. The Spirit of France continues to amaze me with the speed of construction, it is now pretty much complete in terms of superstructure. And as for the Spirit of Britain, she is making the final preperations for her early January departure to Dover.

What does she have such very unusual bow doors. Not the usual type of clamdoors. Why does she have a very unusual bow?
-
The bow door has specially been designed for Calais berths as their different from the normal ferry berths.. The Ships bow doors open and close when unloading the vehicles onboard. Its like a Dover thing that is mostly common for most ferries. ;)

Nah I think he means the complete lack of streamlining - the hull stops and the bow doors are "inside" slightly, looks odd
-
But why do Calais and Dover have such unusual ferry berths? Ferries which berth and unberth at normal ferry berths mostly have loading ramps at the bow and stern, normal clamdoors at the bow and even a collision bulkhead door after the loading ramp at the bow. And such ferries don't have any ugly cowcatchers.
-
Not Funny >:(
but anyway..
lets stay to Spirit Of Britain inside this topic and leave the questions in Cookiebox please.
-
most ferries useualy berth on a pontoon or a small linkspan or even sometimes a quey side......
where as Dover the linkspans have been around for a while and the ferries are made to fit the linkspans so that there arent any arrguments of berth usage if a berth gets modified to suit another ship and another company cant pay to have the modifications

She is finally on her way :2thumbs:

Spirit Of Britain Sails For Dover
05/01/2011
P&O Ferries took delivery of its new €180 million ship Spirit of Britain today (5 January) during a handover ceremony at the stxeurope shipyard in Rauma, Finland.
The ship then followed a route cleared by icebreakers to commence its delivery voyage to Dover. The estimated time of arrival at Dover is Sunday 9 January at 11.00hrs if sea ice conditions in the Baltic are as anticipated.
Upon arrival the ship will undergo final preparations for entry into service on the Dover – Calais route from 21 January.
At 49,000 gross registered tonnes and 213 metres in length, Spirit of Britain is by far the largest ferry ever designed for service on the Dover Strait. The new ship is the first of a pair coming into service for P&O Ferries between Dover and Calais this year, with sister ship Spirit of France to follow in September. Each has capacity for up to 2,000 passengers and vehicle deck space for a line of traffic almost four kilometres long.
Helen Deeble, chief executive, said: “These are exciting times for P&O Ferries. We start the New Year with a magnificent new ship and will take delivery of a second before the year is out. The combined cost of €360 million for the two ships represents the largest investment ever made by P&O Ferries as we continue to strive to set new standards for our customers.â€
and yes she is on her way for 8 or 9 January
-
gess what guys?
I am gona be there when she arrives!!!!!!!!!!!! :o
she arrives at about 11 on sunday morning so as the docks are only 2 mins away, I'm going to go down and watch her arrive, dont worry, i'll take pictures for all of you :2thumbs:
-
when i usually go to Dover i sometimes go up the cliffs (not the castle) but a car park area that some people also call Love-cliff you know... but i go there because the view is amazing and you will see the whole port and if the weather is clear you could be able to see calais and some cliffs in calais too!
But this is where she is right now!:
http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/default.aspx?mmsi=235082716¢erx=21.44232¢ery=61.12498&zoom=10&type_color=6
and there is a chance that she might go under the E20 bridge but looking at the website there is a chance she might go a different direction but thats all we can hope for
did it say 9 Jan? Please let it be on January and no ice please!!!!!
My Birthday is on 9 January and it would be great if the ship arrived on the same day of my birthday :)
-
hey TFK, she is deffinatly due on the 9th :2thumbs: happy birthday for then  hope you have a ferry nice day ;D
-

Thanks,
i really hope i can go on her in February for holiday and see the interior but nice to hear that we have a friend who lives close to Dover just 2 mins away!
-
What will happen to the Pride of Dover and Pride of Calais? Will they be chartered, be sold or go to the scrapeyard?
-
Not sure - at the moment the Dover is laid up at Tilbury
-
I think i might go and visit her before the plan of what will happen to her is finished
she is currently (as the website says) laid up in Tilbury Docks (that near river thames)
-
Did she arrive at dover today?
-
She did indeed :)
-
Look here...

Hopefully I didn't miss that link before, so it was double posted now...
-
How comes only the p&O website has videos and pictures?
where's our pic taker who promised us for some of his own pics (Pride Of Dover) :'(
-
What are the safety features oh this new ferry? I saw in the above-mentioned youtube video that she has two bow doors, the outer one as a kind of a clam door and the inner one acting as the collision bulkhead door.
Does the Spirit of Britain also have flood control doors at her main cardeck and doe she have a double hull (built in sponson), like the Dutch L.P.D. Hr. Ms. Rotterdam does?
-
sorry this should have been posted earlier but some bugg didnt let me but here it is:
9/1/11
Having negotiated over 100 miles of ice flow (the worst seen in 30 years), 40mph snow storms and some very testing sea conditions in the North Sea, the Spirit of Britain finally entered Dover harbour shortly after 11am on Sunday 9th January.
Greeted by glorious sunshine and hundreds of onlookers lining the cliffs and seafront, the vessel made a trip across the harbour prior to berthing in the Eastern Docks for the very first time. In fact the sense of the occasion was wonderfully captured by a welcoming salute from rival SeaFrance’s Berlioz as the Spirit of Britain entered the harbour.
Upon arrival Captain David Miller enthused about the vessel’s exquisite sea-keeping qualities even in some pretty unsavory conditions. He noted that this bodes well for the smoothness of the journey it should be able to deliver on her new Dover-Calais service.
Included below are a couple of pictures of the Spirit of Britain arriving on Sunday together with a hint of what you can expect to find onboard when she enters service at the end of next week.

They will need quite a big space on the beach at Alang in 2036...
-
A Question:
Why does every ferry have a fender along her hull near the waterline, I see it also on the Spirit of Britain and the other vessel of Norfolk Line. ;D
-
In case they have a Spambot captain trying to park it?
-
They will need quite a big space on the beach at Alang in 2036...
that wont happen...

how did you win a trip onboard her bridge?
-
I’ve heard a few people mutter that the Spirit of Britain didn’t look ‘that big’ when she entered the Port of Dover last Sunday. Perhaps from up on the cliffs her size was not immediately apparent.
Thanks then to the Senior Master of the Pride of Canterbury Captain Steve Johnson (who incidentally will also be Senior Master of the Spirit of France) who from his unique vantage point was able to perfectly capture the size of the new ship in comparison to the Pride of Calais

i agree, she didnt look that big as she came in, but when she got in the size difference was rather noticable.
The POC looks like she is ready to be laid up to, apparently she's in just as bad state onboard :-\
you dont win a bridge visit, i know someone who works onboard who can get us on and knows Captian David Miller who is senior master on the SOB
-
Pride of Calais will be here till August or September and after that it will be replaced by SOF
oh your pretty lucky to have such friends..
-
that wont happen...
I don't know. There's a lot of metal to be recycled there.
-
true but i dont think i would be given to local snip-snap pickers
maybe a different place that recycles ships the proper way with machines and stuff
not a indian group of poor people selling a finnjet- carpet for 1 ruppees or something at their local markets
-
pee and ohno, back in the days when it was P&O "Peninsular and Orient Steam Navigation Co" and not dwp and carnival ripping the guts out of the company, the old PO used to make it legally binding that when their more famous ships were chopped, that only artefacts approved by PO could be sold on.
Indeed, the Great White Whale, the former flagship of PO cruises, SS Canberra, the ownership of the wreck didn't pass until the keel had been cut X times and the steam drive had been removed.
In other words, po wanted to make sure no smaller rival sprung up against them using their cast offs... Oh, sorry- I meant they "wanted to preserve their image"
When the sob/f time comes you'll be using them as a razor blade. Though I hope they start looking after them a bit better than their current fleet or they'll not last a full lifetime.
NOTE The above comment about their current fleet standards is my opinion only and is not necessarily the opinion of the forum 'management'. It is based solely on the fact that it's true.

The Spirit of Britain enters service with P&O tomorrow :)
Should be the 09:20 from Dover
