It is self explanatory.
Join the petition. Or die.
This is meant as a light hearted topic to see if we can achieve the impossible and actually get anyone to pay attention to anything anyone ever says. We hope to find alliances with the "Denmark-Sweden in the same environment" campaign and the various worthwhile campaigns in other similar water channels.

A great Idea.

Ok, I'm ready! 8)

(We warned you there would be consequences...)

The consequence: When voting is over, I'm going to change the "No. And I'm prepared for the consequences..." to "Yes. Yes. Yes. I've SEEN THE LIGHT. DOVER-CALAIS, please.
Oh, AND I'll go after them with a red hot poker.

Is there an indifference button? ;D
-
Yeah, I voted "No" & I'm proud of that! I always like to be different from the crowd. :P
You are most certainly 'different'... ::)
-
Is there an indifference button? ;D
YES. It's currently being overhauled and temporarily says "Yes. I would love it"
-
I voted NO.
Why?
Biceaus I am not a freak that is going to look for a verry long time at a computerscreen at a ship wich is just following a course.
I like to enter and leave the port.
But I don't like to just sit and do nothing, biceaus that is boring.
-
Can I quote you on that WM? "Developers has (sic) their own mind & plans..."
I have a feeling that will come back to bite you...
-
I don't care about those people who use my words against me. Do your worse.
I have locked this topic, Mr WM, as it was turning into a slanging match. It was meant as a bit of a joke- as Vstep never pay any attention anyway. It wasn't really intended to be a serious debate.
-
I was just wondering if anyone has considered the idea of Dover and Calais being in the same environment?
-

I wouldn't be too sure...
I think they do...
-
In seriousness, I think they do in spirit, but there are so many disjointed 'what do you want' threads that they don't get chance to really decipher it into meaningfull sense.
Which is why any campaigns have to be bold to catch their attention. Also, there are a lot of pointless comments made in those type of topics (see above) that distract from the real objective of the respective topics.
However, I don't really think Vstep is overly interested in the wishes of the forum users; I think they have a pretty rigid plan when they start a project and keep to their plans. This is why I'm only posting this topic in a light-hearted manner. If I'm wrong, may Pjotr strike me dead (or ban me) ;D

Don't forget, us Forumers are the basis of the Game users...
-
Well we'll have to wait and see.. Not worth speculating about.
If VSTEP put's it in then great, if not, a shame.
But I'd imagine that it would be in the game (maybe or maybe not in the same enviroment as Dover :-\) As from the new trailor it seems an awful lot of content is coming from PRO, like the warship with RIB. And the two sea state (As seen in the Dover scene, I wouldn't in the slightest think VSTEP will allow 6 meter waves to be in a harbour. ;D) with a open area sea state and a sheltered sea state in the same enviroment, regardless if there is land in it.
-
Actually, I think the forum represents a VERY small percentage of the overall sales- don't quote me on figures, but I read it 'upstairs' before I rejoined the ranks of mortality ;D

This has made me think, Dover does have the Rough seas, which Of Dover is a small Harbour, seems pointles... but if we have a big Environment.. Say... 22 miles, then it makes more sense...

It was really a bit of a light hearted banter about Dover-Calais in the same environment
I don't seriously expect it to be even noticed by Vstep, nor considered by them. However, I do agree with Traddles comments and I appreciate you pointing out that thread. I suspect the good Capt. Traddles opened that thread when this one was closed, despite having the moderatorness powers to force this one back open; what a Gent.

Stu,
I have my doubts as well, about VSTEP's interest in our opinion, but we like to think so.

Can we have a no. 10 petition for Dover-Calais in the same environment

You can certainly petition #10 for that, but is there anyone there who knows where Dover and Calais are?

Obviously you've never crossed the channel on a ferry then :P
Crossing from Dover to Calais is not what you think it is - you don't sit in a straight line for 1.5hrs. English channel happens to be very busy and that means ferries have to be constantly slowing down for traffic and avoiding the busy shipping lanes...?

Membership is free. ;D All that the campaign committee (me!) asks is if you would consider a brief 98 paragraph statement in your signature, like TFM and others, to show your support.
And if you'd like to volunteer to go and kidnap Pjotr...
NB JOKE: I do not condone kidnapping Pjotr and ransoming him back for the inclusion of Dover-Calais in the same environment. We also don't want any form of aggressive or terrorist activity to support the campaign- otherwise the British Home Secretary will support it too. We will achieve Dover-Calais in the same environment. ONLY by peaceful means.

Hah, was going to put something but americans wouldnt like it. better not upset anyone!

Gentlemen,
I realise a certain amount of high spirits would ensue in our campaign for Dover-Calais in the same environment but any talk about tying vstep management to trees is bordering on the insane. And any such member committing such offences will be thrown out the campaign...
To do it PROPERLY you need a fast car, rope, axe and RAILWAY lines... ::)

You forgot the train?
-
On a serious point now chaps.
If we want to achieve our aims, we need to put together a sensible group of arguements (I like arguements) that support our case. I mean these as "It will increase sales because..." and not "Do it or we'll tie tou to a railway line and let the Dutch trains do their worst" (we'll keep that plan as a back up!)
-
Well Dover-Calais is one of the most recognised ferry routes in the world? If VSTEP put them in the same environment it may get a lot of attention and increase sales for the game?
-
Well what about if it was not included in game, but could be purchased in the Shipyard...?

Vstep arnt happy with the hull

Why???
Tell them that if they add in Dover-Calais in the same environment then it will make the hull EVEN BETTER
-
Hi Oliver,
A lot of tris are flipped so its hard to get an overall impression. The shape looks like it could be pretty good but the front of the hull needs to be a lot cleaner in terms of its triangulation - better to use quads if possible.

Perhaps we should write a pro-forma "Dear vstep" letter "i the undersigned politely request that you give serious consideration to Dover-Calais in the same environment on the basis that it will undoubtedly increase sales given the international fame of the area.

Hi Patrick
That's a side campaign and related. I honestly do think there'll be a Dover based ferry in there.
As for the 'no' option- why would you want that? you weren't thinking of using that option, were you? >:( :o ::)
TFM. Keep the faith, brother. The campaign is not over yet.
-
Let us hope so...
-
TFM... How many signatures can we count on to send a PM to pjotr?
Not enough... can we hack into peoples accounts instead?
-
I did before it got changed... that's why I'm annoyed.
I'd rather see the Humber modelled first so we can berth POR at Hull. And no not in the same environment. Dover-Calais doesn't mean anything without it's associated ferries. And thinking something doesn't mean it will be there.

That's a good aim as well... Perhaps you should start a Hull-Rotterdam in not-the-same-environment. And we can support each others campaigns.

What a stupid topic did this become?
I voted NO, and now you changed the vote into I really really want to.
That isn't funny!
Why don't you call Vstep every day and shout very loud: I want Dover and Calais in one enviroment.
That is just as effective as this topic, biceaus i shure don't take you serious anymore.
I say it once more, I think it is a stupid idea.
So please don't manipulate the votes of people who don't want it.

-
Sam,
So you're against adding more content to the game? If you think it's boring and we're "freaks" for playing it, that's your opinion, but If you don't like it, don't play it.
-
That's a good aim as well... Perhaps you should start a Hull-Rotterdam in not-the-same-environment. And we can support each others campaigns.
To be honest I'll be happy with whatever VSTEP supply - I think they know that people want the earth but they can only do so much. Just be grateful there is a ship sim (and a new one on the way) - in these uncertain economic times they could just pull the plug and concentrate on the comercial side after all.
-
NathanC,
Somebody asks my opinion so I give my opinion.
Why should I be against new content in the game???
I think that Dover and Calais in one enviroment is stupid.
Firstly, I think it is unpossible for a average computer to run it ok.
And secondly, I don't want to sit behind my pc following the same course for more then one hour.
Missions should be short, fun and challenging, like mooring a containership in Hamburg for example.
Not long and boring.
-
Like I said, you don't sit on one course for an hour. The channel is very busy!
As for a normal computer not being able to run it, well no, I think Rotterdam is way more detailed than Dover and Calais in one enviroment will ever be. Rotterdam is something like 25nm wide and and Dover-Calais are 22nm apart, so it's easily possible. And because half of the environment will be open sea, it will be easier to run?
There's nothing stopping you from creating a mission which starts outside Dover and you have to dock a containership, too....
-
Personally, I think Sam or whoever it was is MORE than welcome here. debate is good...
To reiterate, it was a light hearted joke. can't take a joke, shouldn't have browsed. vstep do not pay attention to these sorts of threads anyway so stop worrying.
Samuel, why not start a "we don't want XXX-YYY in the same environment" campaign group?
-
You all could be very surprised if you knew just how much notice the Vstep people do take of comments posted on the forum. However, it would be great if you all could exercise a little patience and see what transpires. From the posted trailers we have seen many things we were not sure about, have we not? ???
I must say Sam that I am surprised by your comments. Do you not like sailing the ships in the game? Even docking a big containership can take well over an hour in reality, as such ships do not take kindly to being moved around in confined spaces at high speed. If one of those ships were to hit a dock wall at even two knots, then the wall and the ship would be very severely damaged. Here in my home port of Liverpool, it takes about 1h30m to move a containership from the river Mersey and moor her in Seaforth container terminal. The distance in total being about half a nautical mile. The whole pleasure of this game for people like me is to manage to handle the ships with no damage and it does not matter how long it takes as long as it is done safely.
As to many computers not being able to handle an environment linking Dover and Calais, it has been pointed out already that Rotterdam is far bigger and greatly more complex than that, yet it is playable very easily.
-
WOOO! GO THE MERSEY!
Change the water please

I agree with that post 100%!
Patience is everything.....I was in Liverpool when I came back from Ireland a month or so ago, watching all the ships dock was amazing. Saw plenty of tugs as well, going about their business....

As I've said before, this is a light hearted banter and nothing serious. I don't think that vstep is going to base its plans on the many diverse, rootless requests in this forum as they aren't cohesive campaigns. Only a properly organised, VISIBLE campaign, has the chance of being noticed, regardless of whether it is even considered by them.
I think departing and arriving from harbour is the more interesting bit for sure. However, departing AND docking is far, far more interesting. And there is this sense of achievement. Looking at the original 08 mission to get the PoH out of the docks; some of the mission times were quite impressive, but not realistic. I personally would like the way you describe above, but each to their own.

The Mersey is now actually one the cleanest UK rivers which carry commercial traffic. We actually have seals in the river as far from the sea as 2 nautical miles. So be careful how you talk about one of the greatest maritime rivers Tractorman. The water is no longer brown so I would lay a bet that would suprise you. :-* The following two pictures were taken in the last week, and you can see for yourself.
-
Hi Stuart,
I know you meant it in a very lighthearted way, but even so, these things are noted by the Vstep people, I feel sure. How else would they be aware of players preferences?

Your pictures were taken at a fairly low tide level (note the sloping walkways) of the mud stirred up by the ships propellors. The water beside the port quarter of "Black Prince" shows a very different colour as can be seen quite clearly.
-
mhm i'd of said its a shadow but its still fairly brown in my eyes though I did leave at fairly low tide and arrive at low tide.. I'll post some pics of my holiday in a mo

Excellent. Look forward to seeing them

I should point out, in passing, that the Mersey goldfish is now decidedly extinct, thanks to the clean water .

I voted for the Dover-Calais in the same environment, but we need to be realistic as it might be too big to include both ports in a single environment.
The route between Dover and Calais is 22 nautical miles (26 statue miles) apart;
The route between Southampton and Cowes is 11 nautical miles (13 statue miles) apart, and it's almost at the maximum coverage for the Solent environment in SS2008.
So can you see what I mean about being realistic? I don't know if VSTEP is able to increase the size of a single environment area without causing the game to become unstable or suffer from slow loading? :-\

But Isn't Rotterdam Larger still?
-
Do you think we can start a Sister Campaign:
Bring Portsmouth into the Solent Environment...?
-
Hi Stuart,
I know you meant it in a very lighthearted way, but even so, these things are noted by the Vstep people, I feel sure. How else would they be aware of players preferences?
I will answer that. But only in a PM ;)
-
But Isn't Rotterdam Larger still?
I've worked out from the beginning of Port Rotterdam at Maasmond to the end at Brienenoordburg (near Kreekse Haven), there are approximately 22 nautical miles of navigable waters, so it's possible. (buy only just!)
However the relative location of Dover and Calais probably means the environment would have to be rotated to fit both ports, leaving little else to explore within the Dover area, i.e. Folkestone and the famous White Cliffs of Dover.
Anyway it'll be interesting to wait and see what happens.
-
So, now I'm the official campaign supporter too.
:o Welcome Mr WM
Kevin: I don't profess to know the actual inards of the SS programme, but I'm guessing that the programme, once you leave harbour, it just keeps showing water until it is told to start showing land. In which case, you could even have Southampton-New York in one environment for the Titanic fans, as an example.
As for the AI ships in the Channel, that would be similar for any other environment- with more or less ships dependant on your computer. Admitedly, one of the best aspects of the Straits is the Eastwards run along the edge of Plage de Bleriot which would be good scenery
-
So, how many ferries you think will be enough to satisfy people if Dover-Calais will be in same environment ?
One from each company? Or 1 something like the Pride of Dover, 1 ~ European Seaway, 1 Cat & 1 SR.N4 hovercraft ?
Only the full fleet will do...
-
Dont forget an incat people
-
Well, there are 9 berths in Dover (well, 8, Berth 4 is missing)
So the current choice of ferries of Dover for VSTEP to model would be
Berth 1 - European Endeavour/Norman Arrow/Cote D'Albatre
Berth 3 - Maersk Dunkerque/Delft/Dover
Berth 5 - Pride of Kent/Canterbury/Burgundy/European Seaway/Dover/Calais
Berth 6 - Seafrance Moliere/Rodin/Berlioz
Berth 7 - ???
Berth 8 - See Berth 5
Berth 9 - Seafrance Moliere
(Correct me if i'm wrong TFM :P)
Google Image these ferries and see which one you think VSTEP should add :P
-
Norman Arrow, no question about it :P
-
Dover also has a cruise terminal which could fit Ocean Star, a hoverport (Freedom 90 anyone?) a Marina (Classic Yacht and Marbella)
So actually even if Calais isn't in the same environment, we still have quite a lot of places for a wide variety of ships in Dover.
-

Berth 1 - European Endeavour/Norman Arrow/Cote D'Albatre < No longer operating from Dover
Berth 2 - Norfolk Line, sometimes P&O
Berth 3 - Maersk Dunkerque/Delft/Dover
Berth 5 - Seafrance Nord Pas-de-Calais (Only boat left small enough to fit)
Berth 6 - Seafrance Moliere/Rodin/Berlioz
Berth 7 - P&O And Rodin/Berlioz
Berth 8 - P&O
Berth 9 - Seafrance Moliere
(Correct me if i'm wrong TFM :P)

Are you sure about SF Molly? I've been catching the same crossing (nearly) every week for months now and we have always gone from the berth 2 down from Maersks- although I can't remember the number.
-

Strange, As far as I kniw, it has to berth at no. 9 due to the length, and when I saw her in Do ver, she had to wait for us to leave berth 9, but if you have seen on berth 2/3, then obivously she can use that berth as well
Also, we have the Cargo Terminal for Agile Solution, and the Tug Haven for tugs...
-
Facing out to sea, the pier was on the port side, with the POD/POC coming onto the other side of the pier... then if I remember right theres the missing berth then maersk.
Weeks running, always that berth.
EDIT: DO they have fuel bunker lines to all berths? When I used to catch the PO Picardy on the last evening crossing it used to go to the western end of the main harbour and when I asked was told it was fuelling...

Well at the moment there is a bunker craft, and I think it would be easier to use the western berth with lots of free space.
Your description sounds like Berth 6, with berth 5 next door, and then the gap of berth 4 before berth3 which is Norfolk Line...
Tough question, but did the berth have a big bulky box on top?
-
Yes, just looked at MS maps local.live.com have a look.
yes, berth 6... which means POD/POC (cant remember which) came into 5! would explain why it took him 10 minutes to park it if its a smaller than normal berth! ;D
-

I don't think most ferries can use berth 5 though, only the Renoir Manet and NPC...

It must have been. Have a look at local.live.com and tell me if the small ship tied up is on berth 5- 'cos that's the one where PO had a problem getting in. ASAIR we've always gone from the one to the left. 100% certain that we were on a pier with moorings on both sides.
EDIT: I videod the dodgy parking on my 'phone. I will look tomorrow when i get to work
-
I have the Seafrance Renoir on berth 7
-
I have the Seafrance Renoir on berth 7
Then I'm certain that we were on 6 and the pod/poc was coming in on 5... but I will check on my phone to see.
-
Oh sh...sugar,
Having reviewed my phone, it would APPEAR that you are correct about it being berth 9 as berth 6 has a gantry at the end, which wasn't in my film (if it was, the POD/POC took it out).
Sorry TFM... Even I can be wrong sometimes

Okay, lets have some of the things we can do with a Dover-Calais Environment
Dover:
Cruise Terminal for Cruise Liners, eg Ocean Star
Ferry terminal for berthing Ferries
Marina
Dover Cargo terminal - Agile Solution
Tug Haven - Useful for mooring cargo/cruise liners, and ferries in bad weather
Eastern Arm, end is used for mooring vessels
Hoverport - Freedom 90
Calais:
Ferry terminal
Hoverpad (2, if you include the one inside the port)
Large Freight Area
More tugs
Can moor Anchor Handling Tugs
Another Marina
Drydock
Dover-Calais Environment:
Ability to do cross channel services. Not just with ferries, but you could have the Agile Solution, or maybe a tug pull a barge from Dover-Calais, Personal Yachts going from one marina to another...
The possibilities are endless!
-
That will be total fun on MP!
Glad you agree

Well said TFM! :)

when i was on my work experiance at Dover port and i went up to port control and they told me that the seafrance moliere can only go on 9 berth even thought 8 berth is the same it doesn't fit.

I think that proves the are in different enivorments though :(
5. Dover, United Kingdom
6. Calais, France
and Also the English Channel
:'(

On request, customer specific environments can be created and integrated into the simulator. Contact us at info@shipsimpro.com for all your environment requirements and we will supply you with a tailored price quote.
3.
Maybe they could make one up for us......

Prepare all that you have to pay them for including Calais.
But They are already made, so shouldn't be too difficult
Put it into the Shipyard...

I think it would be great to have both ports in the game but apparently VSTEP arn't porducing any ferries that opperate from Dover into the game wjich i think spoils it a bit. >:(

That's just speculation in my mind. Something that wasn't officially announced. Just feelings from a member of what a dev has posted. ;)

It might be worth pointing out that The English Channel is included in the list of environments here. There are two sides to the Channel. :-X
Please remember that SSPro is NOT a game and never will be. It is a serious aid for the training of professional seafarers.
Whilst it is nice to speculate about this, all, except the published details by Vstep, is pure speculation and nothing more.

What do you mean by that? I think he's hinting with the "There are two sides to the channel" that the closest section of the two sides are in PRO..
But as Traddles said, it's in PRO but that isn't a game version that costs around £20...

I thought he was hinting at them being seperate, but we shall see...
I would love to see what Calais looks like in SSPro...
-
As much as I don't like speaking for others, I doubt Traddles was hinting at anything as I really doubt he knows (with great respect to him) much more than we do.
I seriously doubt vstep is overly bothered by SS as it has suffered from a lack of attention for quite a while... the regular release of ships and environments for a reasonable price... There are so many cobwebs in 'the shipyard' that I think the entire cast of arachnabphobia is living there.
Everyone makes repeated reference to the difference in price between PRO and SS; however, the number of ships and environments ISN'T what accounts for the justification of the price differential. An environment in either may LOOK superficially the same and the same for the ships, but as said already they are leagues apart in terms of the technical specification.
So if Calais was added or available as an add on, would Commodore of XYZ shipping line complain that he's been ripped off because SS has the same Calais environment as his X000 Euro version? Hardly... as the technical side of it just isn't comparable. Whatever will be with vstep will be.

Never before have I agreed with you this much. ;D

I completely agree that they should both be in the same enviroment! :2thumbs:
I was just thinking though, if a solent crossing from Cowes - Southampton on Red Eagle takes as long as it does, (which is nearly the actual crossing time in real life) how long would this route take??
-
Hi Brown,
The length of time the crossing would take depends upon which ship you are sailing on. But whichever ship it was it would be realistic in relation to the ships speed.
-

The Red Eagle is a slow ferry, only 14knots. The Dover Calais is operated at 20-24knots, and it takes 1 hour 30 minutes berth to berth ;)
Freedom 90/RJ4 should take less then 1hr
-
if it takes that long in real time, i wouldn't expect it all in one environment, as that would be alot of terrain then i'd assume. guess i die now

CT1, CT2 CT3 - Yes three of them!
Not to be confused with ECT
Eastern Cargo Terminal - yes we can accept the Agile Solution with ease...

Thanks TFM... I have an idea... What about putting them- and the rest of Port of Dover- together with Calais and have 'Dover-Calais in the same environment'. What about that?
PS I was recently looking at mooring fees in Dover for my boat- what do they think I own- the QM2? Even to float out from a trailer/ or bring a crane on site costs a small (large) fortune... :o

Have you compared prices with other places to see how it fares? I am pretty sure if you are wanting expensive, Gunwharf Quays will cost you both arms and legs...

Gunwharf? You mean at Pompey? If so, that's a bit too far from the French coast for me... this tub- fun though it is- can only make 5-6 kts ::)
I wonder if I can swap it for one of the boats on Volvo round the world race... without anyone spotting it
On a point, 5-6 kts under sail. about the same under power... 8-9 kts under both. >:(

I bet you're right on that... Considering the price for mooring at the 'less fashionable end' of the port are hideous, hate to think what GWQ is.
I'm even thinking of registering it in Calais or Boulogne where it is cheaper and where it is more fun to sail!

That's correct Calais is at the other end of the taxi way.
As you can probably tell by the fact that they are both mentioned on a ship simulator website, they are in fact towns that have airports... ;)
-
Wondered what all this was about...
about time im signed myself up too
-
Nice campaing guys!! haha :D.. would be awesome :D, all in the same map :D
That would be the nicest thing to do on multiplayer
or an inland shipping route, rotterdam to germany or something would be nice too :D
This escaped my beady eyes.... Suggesting other routes in THIS thread is like going to Mecca and proclaiming the Pope supreme ruler of the world!
(The above is NOT intended to offend any religion. Whoever is first to feign offense knows what to do...)

Welcome LV...
-
Me and Tractorman are currently modelling Dover for Virtual Sailor...and Calais is in the same environment so maybe we can model that too at some point..
If Dover and Calais aren't in the same environment in SSE, there is still hope :o
-
Well we have the ferries now... ;D
-
Well we have the ferries now... ;D
Nathan/Tractor man... This is good news... :D
TFM... Between your chunnelbeater and TMs Incat- and was it you who started the Rodin/Berlioz? Well, there's half the fleet...
I could even dig out my copy of blender and finish PoBi (wrong port I know, but we can just say the skipper was ratted that night!)
-
Haha i model Dover-Calais to
-
Haha i model Dover-Calais to
But is it in the same environment?
-
In VS the whole world is one environment ;)
-
It isn't for VS
-
One Condition:
you have one of the vessels in game as SR-N4
-
What do you mean? ???
-
SR-N4, the huge hover craft that used to go from dover to calais. without it the Dover-Calais environment is incomplete.
-
Well we already have the Freedom 90 in the game, i would imagine that all the ships from SS08 would be in SSE, so whats the point adding this one?
-

It is a lot more complicated to pilot ;)
- Variable Pitch Props
- Rudders
- Forward and Rear Propellors mounted on independently adjustable pylons
-
True....
-
Jonah, asking questions like "What's the point of adding SR.N4 in to Dover-Calais in one environment?" is a total blasphemy, because SR.N4 is one of the symbols of Dover-Calais crossings (in one environment, of course)!
-
Yes, but you can't have everything! It's not possible to have every single little thing!
-
Whatever, it doesn't matter to me, it's just my opinion, which I am entitled to, but if you must argue against me....
-
We need Dover-Calais environment becuase I have a planed mission for it already
-
Hmm send your your ideas to me so i can use them in the new version of BSS TFM. ;)
BSS is an secret projekt I working on than only a handful of peopel on this forum knows what it's one of them is TFM.
-
I think it is even cooler. when you can sail from one mp map to another.. just like single player...
only online then.. you can go anywhere then ;)
-
Jonah, asking questions like "What's the point of adding SR.N4 in to Dover-Calais in one environment?" is a total blasphemy, because SR.N4 is one of the symbols of Dover-Calais crossings (in one environment, of course)!
Well said!
SR.N4 has a good claim to be a player ship anyway, regardless of the Dover/Calais environment.
It's got great historical value
It's the largest commercial hovercraft in the world
and it's just the right kind of different, and helps to diversify Ship Simulator.
It's a shame I never got to go on SR.N4, or even see it in action. I think they should be restored into full working order and kept running, even if only by charitable donations.
-
It's a shame that someone stating his opinion has to raise controversy, you guys can wish all you want, but you will never have every little thing in SSE.
And i think it would be nice to have the Sr.N4 in SSE, but i think the Ship List has been finalized for SSE, has it not?
-

How would you know? :-\
Who knows.. They may change little things here and there.. Nothing is set in stone. ;)
Anyway, do we know that SR.N4 is definately IN SSE or not in SSE? No we don't, unless you know otherwise?
-
Well, I was thinking by now, its only about 5 months till release, so maybe they have a final ship list by now? i was just assuming, as i said "have they not?"
-
Well, I was thinking by now, its only about 5 months till release, so maybe they have a final ship list by now? i was just assuming, as i said "have they not?"
Silly to even assume when it's going to be released. They've only handed out a estimate, as with previously, VSTEP most of the time release well after the estimate.
However thats not because they're lazy, they're just making it more stable for us to run. :)
-
Well, I was thinking by now, its only about 5 months till release, so maybe they have a final ship list by now? i was just assuming, as i said "have they not?"
Who knows
But as Captain Darling said, unless you have seen the list you don't know what is on it...
-
I know that QM2 will be in SSE! :2thumbs: Why? Because Jonah said so! (Don't let me post the link to that daft topic!)
-
Oh my god really? We're going to bring that up again? It doesn't do well to dwell on the past....
I didn't say they had a final list, i was asking if they did, and as I said I assumed they did as there are only about 5 months until release.... it doesn't matter though, but I doubt that SR.N4 will be in it.
She would be a fun craft to handle especially in Phi Phi Islands.
Regards,
Jonah

We can only hope!
-
Exactly....
-
Wow! and I thought only I could start arguements over nothing.
We don't want any arguements or fighting here... We are a peaceful campaign and death to anyone who says otherwise.
For the benefit of Nations that do not understand irony, just consider it a joke. I can't be bothered to explain what irony is again.
I like that photo of the flymo lawn mower on the beach with all those people around it... I can't imagine those risk-averse people at the EU H&S teams allowing that now...
Objections
"Ooohhh... we can't allow H/C on the beach. Imagine the mess if someone ran into a propellor... We would lose our blue flag, clean beach, status."
Response
"To do that is stupid. Do we NEED stupid people on the planet?"
Objections
"The h/c is sooooo environmentally un-friendly... Think of those poor polar bears, hugging diminishing lumps of ice".
Response
"When was the last time you saw a polar bear (or ice for that matter) in Dover-Calais in the same environment anyway? ::)
Objections
"H/C are sooooo noisy"
Response
Removed before moderators see it It translated as "go forth and multiply"
Objections
"But Britain invented the H/C and we CAN'T admit that Britain is good at anything"
Response
"Ah... I didn't think of that one"
-

It's not like there aren't enough warnings already
Objections
"The h/c is sooooo environmentally un-friendly... Think of those poor polar bears, hugging diminishing lumps of ice".
Hovercraft are actually one of the best ways of getting around in environmentally sensitive, due to their lack of wake and the fact that the pressure footprint of a hovercraft is less than that of a seagull standing on one leg
Objections
"H/C are sooooo noisy"
Hovercraft generate less noise than a vessel of the same size and capable of the same speeds.
Objections

Blasphemy! yes we can! Blighty!
-
I totaly agree with McGherkin and i have finaly decided which ferrys/hovercrafts i'm going to atleast try to model for SS and those 2 ferrys is.
1.Finnlady (Hight Speed Ferry owned by Finnlines)
2.SR.N4 (Look at the topic)
I did decide for that yesterday, i make 2 models of SR.N4 one for SS and one in SU for my secret projekt ;)
-
It's not like there aren't enough warnings already
There can never be enough. People can not be allowed to think for themselves- at least not in EU anyway.

Apart from the 1.5 tonnes of fuel per hour for a relatively small passenger/cargo load... I think the polar bears of the world will be more concerned at the CO2 emmissions than a bit of wave turbulence. You must have seen some VERY heavy seagulls...

Really? Where did you get this idea from... Certainly it doesn't match up with my recollection from being in Dover and almost deafened by the Princesses. Somewhat noisier than their replacement Cats, which weren't that much bigger...

Hovercraft will always be more efficient than conventional boats because boats have to deal with water resistance, and need more power to move at speed.
Really? Where did you get this idea from... Certainly it doesn't match up with my recollection from being in Dover and almost deafened by the Princesses. Somewhat noisier than their replacement Cats, which weren't that much bigger...
SR.N4 was very noisy as it had four Rolls-Royce Proteus gas-turbine engines, and also massive unducted propellors. Modern hovercraft use quieter, more efficient high-speed diesels. Also, propellors generate most of their noise laterally, that is to say sideways from the edges of the propellor. Modern hovercraft have a casing around the propellor which captures and absorbs this sound, and also the propellors themselves have been improved in terms of their noise output.
I know too much about hovercraft for my own good.
-
I always believed that hovercraft were immensely inefficient, compared to a vessel with a standard displacement hull, travelling at standard displacement spoeeds. (Look at a horse-drawn barge. 1 horse power by definition, but travels happily for large distances at about 4 mph on a few bales of hay).
Compare the fuel consumption of a hovercraft carrying 50 passengers with a ferry carrying the same load. (I don't have time to get the figures, but I recall that the hovercraft consumes a lot more fuel due to having to thrust itself a few feet into the air, constantly).
-
Terry
The figure I recall was actually 1.27 tonnes for the Dover-Calais (in the same environment) crossing... But remember that is less than an hour (as I incorrectly quoted above).
I was told that, by volume, the big old flymos used as more fuel for the crossing than the superseacat. Consider the difference in capacity...
And the hovermower needs a higher grade of fuel, akin to jet fuel, than the eggwhisker.
-

woo go the superseacats! :D
-

The incats are more efficient than the superseacats. ;)
Hence why the IOMSPC didn't renew the charter for Superseacat 2 (viking) and bought their own incat fastcraft (Incat 050, Manannan).

yup. i prefer Viking's looks though, can't beat her
-
2nd InCat ;)
Yeah 2nd Incat in the fleet. :)
-
You must have seen some VERY heavy seagulls...
Damage to the shore environment, such as beaches, mud flats and vegetation is virtually nil because of the hovercraft’s low pressure "footprint". For example, the average human being when standing on a beach exerts a pressure of some 3lbs per square inch underfoot, rising locally to 25lbs per square inch when walking. The average hovercraft by comparison, exerts a pressure of only 0.33lb per square inch on the surface regardless of speed. This "footprint" pressure is less than that of a
seagull standing on one leg!
-
And this is more important than CO, CO2, PM, ABC, XYZ???
I don't think the sea or beach is OVERLY damaged by people standing on it.
In any case, are you sure you have your numbers right there??? Hovercrafts still have to abide by the laws of physics (and if they don't abide by those laws, a decent barrister should be able to get them off their charges)

It's been a very quiet few weeks at the campaign headquarters.
However, given that DCITSE is third in importance after 1) Marmite 2) Life. It seems that now is a good time to remind all members of the campaign that
Dover - Calais in one environment is for life (until 2011/SSME anyway) and not just for 2ndQ2010.
Go out there and pledge to adopt a copy of SSE-DCITSE. Do it now.
-
Seeings its nearing Decemeber...
I'd thought i'd bring together 2 great British emblems...Dover to Calais in the same environment, and Christmas :)
"When santa got suck up the chimney, he began to shout...Dover to Calais in the same environment!"
More to come :)

And Dover looks pretty great too :2thumbs:

And it looks like the FAIRMOUNT SHERPA has had a makeover as well.....don't know if this is for the SS Pro version only.
I have never really liked her green/blue/brown livery in SS2008 - just looking at her sometimes gave me a headache ;)

Is that really her? I was thinking wow nice new ship, looks like Fairmount Sherpa.... ;D

All i want for christmas
is ... DOVER TO CALAIS IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT

On the first day of
Christmas 2nd Quart 2010- Vstep sold to me "12 empty MP servers, 11 flying tankers, 10 weird bugs, 9 pages of EULA, 8 wind/wave settings, 7 fantastic boats, 6 great missions, 5 not-bad missions, 4 DoCa ferries, 3 Superseacats, 2 Ferry terminals in one environment, and a ferry up a pear tree"

Most likely one of these Vstep SS Pro demonstration stall at an exhibition.
Or maybe the home of a lucky Euromillions lottery jackpot winner! (which I would have done if it was me!)
Who says it's Vstep? SS Pro has much better graphics.
It's a Kongsberg simulator at the nautical college, where im currently following a radar navigator course. It was the last exercise before the exam tomorrow. We were enroute from the south east going lane in Dover strait to Calais. We had some time to kill, after picking up the pilot [as you can see on one of the pictures] we entered the channel to the port of Calais.

Nice

We are loosing the forum...
Nooooo

It will only affect those on the other side of the pond, and WM

They are only doing it so they can delete the Dover - Calais in the same environment campaign HQ rather than admit their mad policy of excluding Dover - Calais in the same environment is total insanity.
Give in you fools. You can not hide away. It is your destiny to make Dover - Calais in the same environment
-
What's after this? Solent - Cherbourg in the same environment? I think that would go nice with Titanic and Nomadic, actually :P
-
Once the DOVER TO CALAIS IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT campaign succeeds (which it will!!)....and the SOLENT TO CHERBOURG IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT also succeeds (which it might).....
We need a BELFAST TO LIVERPOOL IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT ;)
-
Hoi Lagan,
That would leave us with quite some busyness to handdle, would it not ?
then the SOLENT TO CHERBOURG IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT is also succeeds (which it might).....
And we need a BELFAST TO LIVERPOOL IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT ;)
You have the advantage with the locale knowlidge then! Good for you :2thumbs:
vr. gr. / kind regards, Erik
-
Who knows?
Someday we could maybe have Rotterdam to New York in the same environment.
But, for now the main focus is on christmas Dover to Calais in the same environment
-
Getting Portsmouth added is next priority...
Add Portsmouth to The Solent Campaign...
-
Remember that Dover - Calais in the same environment is for life and not just for Christmas/Ramadam/Diwali
-
What's next when we get Dover - Calais in the same environment, add Dunkerque and Boulogne?
-

If we are going to bring up this before we eaven know if we will get Dover - Calais in the same environment Why not bring this up.
Okay I have a nice suggestion
how about the Port of either Stockholm or Kappelskar, up in the Baltic.
these would be very different from the current environments, as you have to navigate your way up the Archipelago which is very difficult.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=59.505758,18.554535&spn=0.394435,1.454315&t=h&z=10
I think it would make a challenging environment for ShipSim
-
If we were to go Southampton-Sydney via Panama we could dodge the nasty pirates off Somalia. Nice and slow passage though loads of time to look out for whales, dolphins, Portugese men o'war and of course plastic footballs.
-
Just be very careful for big, black footballs... about 9ft in diamater, with spiky metal bits sticking out of them...
If you play football, I GUARANTEE you will get a bang out of it.
-
Hi Stuart,
There are actually hundreds of thousands of pretty coloured footballs floating around the oceans of the world. The little yellow ducks of a few years back have nothing on the number of footies. :o Those black ones with spikes do make a big noise if you hit them, don't they ???
Angus.
-
I wonder how many footballs.... competition time- anyone who can say how many footballs are floating on planet earth oceans and PROVE it, gets £1million for Christmas 2159D
I'm sure at some point in your marmite maritime career your ship must have encountered some odd stray objects- every so often you read of a ship that 'finds' a WW2 leftover shell or mine... :o

Absolutely spot on! Well done... But now you need to PROVE it to claim the prize money.

No problem:

I feel absolutely certain that nobody will be in the least interested in this post. However, bearing that in mind, I have been able to ascertain for you that the D-CISE thingy, whatever that may mean, ;) is to be included in Ship Simulator Extremes. This information comes with the blessing of Vstep, BUT PLEASE do not ask for more as I do not know any more. Just try to look on it as an early Christmas present.
Have a look at the name on the loading ramps. This is not a figment of your imagination. :-X :-X
Now, who was it who said Vstep take no notice of what players would like. ??? ???
Angus.
P.S. PLEASE do not pester VStep for more, they have more than enough on their plate as it is. Thank you. :police:

PS I vote that VSTEP are gods
Maybe/maybe not.... I think starting a campaign might just be pushing luck!!!
-
This is brilliant news. ship simming has become a lot more fun, i just wish SSE would come out for christmas. or hopefully my birthday.
However, this proves that Stu has powers which are as yet largely hidden. I think I should watch my step around him lest i turn into a frog or something.
Thanks again, Vstep!
-
Now, who was it who said Vstep take no notice of what players would like. ??? ???
Someone who issued a challenge and rallying cry, probably...
However, this proves that Stu has powers which are as yet largely hidden. I think I should watch my step around him lest i turn into a frog or something.
I did nothing. I'm sure that Vstep had the plans in progress long before this campaign was started.
One thing though, to those of us who HAVE supported the campaing, PLEASE heed Angus request to not pester Vstep for more info. This has proven Vstep has listened. Anyone who ignores Angus 'request' may well find themselves saying 'reddit'.
-
That's great news, I just hope my PC can meet the specifications for SS Extremes when it comes out. I would be gutted if this was not the case :'(
-
If mine doesn't, I too would be gutted. I'm sure there's a ton of options to optimise performance etc, and 2008 does run really smooth on my pc (with occasional massive drops in frame-rate in Marseilles, Hamburg and Rotterdam), so fingers crossed it won't be too bad in that sense. I like my games looking their best, and find it hard to accept less. :)
-
You could always re-programme your PC with a mallet and then go buy another one!

not when you don't have enough money to go out and get a new one.
-
I suspect, only suspect mind you, that if your computer runs SS 2008 well then it will run SSExtremes too. However do not take that as gospel, I only suspect this to be so. ::)
-
what about voortberand besparen? the graphics in that must be pretty similar to SSE?
-

I think the technical procedure is to kick it with large boots, hence the term "rebooting your system"... ;D

If it is that literal, I now have an image of PCs racing up and down the road, bumping into things. "Computer crash".

I have felt felt like 'rebooting' my computer...

I suspect, only suspect mind you, that if your computer runs SS 2008 well then it will run SSExtremes too. However do not take that as gospel, I only suspect this to be so. ::)
I very much suspect that some of the lower-spec PCs that currently can just about run Ship Simulator may not be able to run SS Extremes. That seems almost inevitable.
But nothing is certain yet, so don't go rushing out and upgrading your PC yet (although if it struggles with SS2008, maybe that wouldn't be a bad idea anyway?).
-
an interesting point. remember that windoze (sic) seven is less memory/processor intensive, so upgrading OS might help- cheaper than buying another pc
-
Yup guys - I will wait and see what the specifications say when SS Extremes comes out.
In my case it may involve a CPU upgrade, if my motherboard allow this. Mine is Intel Core 2 E6400 @ 2.14 Ghz, which just barely meet the 2.4Ghz minimum requirement to run SS2008. (it is my understanding that Questviewer can only 'see' one processor, is this right?)
It it comes to a point where I will have to upgrade my CPU, I wouldn't be put off by this; not since we now have a Dover to Calais enviroment in SS Extremes! ;D
-
When do you think the specs for SSE will come out? Could we know before the game comes out?
-
A *guess* here is a few weeks, maybe a month before... I KNOW that normally my guesses are nearly always 100% perfect, but on this occasion I don't know for certain.
-
What is the change to that will be rearly, I hope they will be. And if they came cound they be nice if they also give us a ferry, they sail that i route in the real world

Go for that, Stu!

Perhaps for "Free SR.N4 hovercraft (for Dover-Calais in the same environment) in the Shipyard campaign" ?
Go for that, Stu!
I don't think they will go with the free idea, but certainly SR-N4 is suitable for SSE
1. It adds diversity: SR-N4s are the largest surviving commercial hovercraft in the world, and they have been an icon for many years
2. There is a cause to support: The Hovercraft Museum has the last two SR-N4s in the world, and they are at risk of being bought out by private owners
3. They promote the Hovercraft Museum: That can be no bad thing, especially as at the Hovershow there will probably be lots of potential Vstep customers...
4. it does go nicely with the Dover-Calais environment...

1. Sort-of surviving...
2. Or scrapped by this 'museum'
3. This 'museum' actually opens, does it? Potential for SSE sales, I think maybe yes.
4. Absolutely.
Personally, I do think this is a good idea. But I dont' agree with the 'free' bit... (as said by McG). The key to any campaign succeeding is to demonstrate that it will increase sales, either total new sales of SSE or (in this case I think more likely) add ons... We all know the effort that goes into making a model; they need to earn money out of it (either through sales, or sponsorship (unlikely from this 'museum').

The Hovercraft Museum doesn't own them
They are owned by someone who is either a millionaire, unless you are the Hovercraft Museums Landlord when asking for rent...
-

Actually it'd be better as a "SR.N4 hovercraft in SSE for Dover-Calais in the same environment".
Meaning like having it as a ship that comes together with SSE installation, but not as a separate add-on.

Well this museum hosts the popular 'Hovershow' where hovercraft from around the world congregate. Needless to say, there are a lot of people there to see those hovercraft and what if there were copies of ssE available in the shop stands?

A little less beer. Try again? WHO is the landlord? Not me... You?

But to make it worth while this would put up the price of SSE to a higher figure, making it un-affordable to some people. If they charged, say £5-£10, would they sell enough to make it worthwhile? Perhaps.
-

I am nto sure who the Landlord is. I think it is either SEEDA or MoD
either way they have asked for rent for having the craft stored on their pland
The Owner, when he can be found, says he doesn't own them...
-
I'll buy them then... How much?
-
Face it Stu, I have had a reasonably (uncharacteristic) good idea. I'm gonna steal your throne, God!

Who knows
The Museum had to pay something like £5000 just to open Anne up this year
it is a real shame

Answer me this:
The Freedom 90 has 2 thrust fans. If you press the up arrow what happens?
Then what happens when you drag one of the throttle levers up on the screen?
I'm sure Vstep will find a way of controlling them in a way that can be done with the normal controls
Anyway, Voortberand Besparen and SSPro both can have keys assigned for four independant engines.

now sssh!

Sorry
Anyway to the question:
Firstly SSPRo costs a lot more then SS does
It is merely a question of 4 throttles and 3 different rudders
I could well be wrong.
If I am that is great I would love to play a SR.N4
And since Hoverspeed doesn;t exist, i am not sure who they would need to ask for the colours
Hopefully they would use these colours - they are my favourite

YES!!!!!!!!

oh, ive found a few errors in the enviroments. As me living in dover i know the port well and hve found a few errors such as the no7berth being on the quey insted of in the water like the rest and the lack of the calais port controll tower
-
How exactly, considering it hasn't been released yet?
-
This poll sucks.
It should be "No, I want a port somewhere besides europe in the game"
-
agreed, there is no "no" choice in the pole :(
-
Yea I honestly would like the new york environment extended and somewhere as Keane said besides Europe...cant wait for sydney
-

Sucks? In what way does it use negative pressure to attract a gas, liquid or metaloid?
As for your point. Agreed. Perhaps New York and San Fransisco bay should be in it?
agreed, there is no "no" choice in the pole :(
Tough. It made it into the game.

Sydney isn't in Europe.
For that matter, neither is Dover... >:(

Don't forget plasma, everyone forgets plasma!
And i think you'll find that Calais is in the EU
-
Don't forget plasma, everyone forgets plasma!
Are you referring to a component of blood or to warp core fuel?
And i think you'll find that Calais is in the EU
How very nice for the French then.
-
Plasma is when atoms are stripped of all their electrons, forming a 'gas' of electrons and positive nucleii
-
Plasma is when atoms are stripped of all their electrons, forming a 'gas' of electrons and positive nucleii
What has this got to do with Dover/Calais?
-
Apparently the poll sucks, in that it sucks in solids/liquids/gases/plasma by using lower pressure than the environment around it...
-
Plasma is when atoms are stripped of all their electrons, forming a 'gas' of electrons and positive nucleii
Summarised: When they have an IMBALANCE of electrons/protons. There is no reason why it should be a +ve charge.
What has this got to do with Dover/Calais?
I don't know. Someone said this 'sucked' so I enquired what the connection was between the movement of a gas, liquid or metaloid by the application of negative pressure. Then TFM quite rightly pointed out the 4th state of matter (there is debate as to whether this is a 4th state or whether it is a state 3b).
I have since looked up on google and found that 'sucks' is a derogatory word used by people of poor language skills to deride something they don't like. Instead of directly and objectively explaining why.
-
For that matter, neither is Dover... >:(
I think that was at the expense of including Calais in the same enviroment with Dover.
If it had been just Dover then I'm sure we would have been able to see more of the coastline
-
I doubt that. Dover was, as a guess, made primarily for PRO... They don't need miles of coast looking pretty, then need real, accurate ports.
So, in my opinion (which is normally 100% accurate) if Calais wasn't in then you wouldn't have got any more of the White Cliffs
-

-
Thanks to you I've now got my post count up by 2 as well. Thanks McG... and a jar of Marmite to you too... If I could upload one that is :-\
(you could always explain how and increase your post by 1... I can ask a question and increase by 1 too...)
-
You need:
a Lightscribe DVD-RW drive (a DVD-RW drive is not enough)
a butterknife
Marmite
A blank Lightscribe disc
Instructions:
1. open the disc drive
2. using the butterknife, smear marmite liberally on both sides of the disc
3. insert the disc and close the disc tray.
4. open my computer
5. the DVD drive icon will be replaced with a picture of a jar of marmite, and the text alongside reads; MARMITE!
6. select the MARMITE! and press CTRL+C
7. Open up Email, Press CTRL+V to insert the MARMITE! into the email and send it
8. The person at the other end needs a lightscribe drive and disc, too
9. They should put the disc in the drive and drag the email attachment into its write folder
10. Write the disc
11. When they open the tray, the disc will be identical to yours, i.e. it has Marmite smeared all over it.
This operation may void your warranty.
-
I have a small suspicion that you are joking. :-\
Seriously though; what IS the best way to upload a pic?

Yeah, it says right in the topic title Capt Cadet, its already been "announced" by Traddles...
Thank you. :police:

Now it becomes apparent why so many of us actively dislike our government. They put us into serious debt, and then try to sell off the Country bit by bit to get themselves out of trouble. Politicians, UGH. >:(
-
:o i think that i should be worried. they might try and sell of the isle of wight off. does that mean i will become french? and to cross the solent in our rib we need our passport? lol
-
Wow now thats strange, walking to France for the first time ever
But this is definately an outrage, maybe its time for a new campaign? I cant help but think that Gordon Brown and his bananas were backing the dover to calais in the same environment campaign! To please us English and French so we could unite in real life
But very sad :'( Im off to Facebook to see if theres a group called "Hands off our Dover Gordon" :2thumbs:
Kind Regards
Matthew.
Yes there is a petition! http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=319735745038&ref=search&sid=1039196530.2940155770..1&v=info

I would be inclined to say (and I better be careful, since I'm in France at the moment and they have no sense of humour)
"Join the G. Brown and G.Browns head (NOT) in the same environment... But under the ridiculous laws set down by comrade brown-stalin, I could be locked up in a ghullag for even thinking anything other than good thoughts about him.
Anyway, WHY shouldn't the French get a bit (more) of Britain? We British have been told by our own government for years that we must be slaves to the world...
Role on 6th June...
And at £££££££ per MB roaming BT wireless flaming broadband (that works better here than at home) I am going offline now before I get myself arrested (and without trial) for inciting revolution, comrades.

Amazingly the principal and some citizens of Calais are going the other way round, proclaiming Calais as a part of England/London, looking forward to the Olympic Games in 2012..

Great..... ::)

I am glad you approve Stu...
She is to be named the Cap Finistere
-
It will be the "Cap Finisterre" then - a nice ship in Brittany colours! :2thumbs:
Beats me, The Ferry Man...
-
That was sarcasm, TFM... I personally think that they must have worked hard to find a ship so unsuitable.
BTW... Interesting point. PandO or Pretty Orrible as I prefer to name them say that they were searching for years for a ship to replace the POBI... Well, one wonders if they even bothered to look at the superfast v?
No, I suspect...
-
As you said, the Superfast V isn't the best ship for the route, neither is it a replacement for the Bilbao - there are no where near as many cabins on the Finistere as either the Biklbao or Pont-Aven; It looks doubtful wether she will even make any Mini-Cruises...
-
Seems to be always hard for second hand tonnage to meet everyones expectations, eh?
-
Depends on how high the expectations are - some companies seem to do well with second-hand tonnage (LD, TEF, Fastnet (at least theortically, seeing as they haven't started yet)), others don't, and it depends on the route as well I suppose, the Biscay needs a tough ship, with cabins for all passengers, good freight carrying...
-
Well DFDS have always had a good eye for spotting used ships- even buying way in advance knowing that they would need it in X years time...
In days gone by, shipping companies would cascade stuff down to the lesser routes, with the important routes getting new builds... but now most companies are so short-sighted; I suspect there are few companies in Europe and none in Britain that can boast that... The best example that I can think of is Stena... A company like that with their dynamic approach... :(
Yes, we need to get Stena back to Britain.
-
Another problem is the timing - there are probably plenty of ships that could be used, but they have to be available at the right time...
-
I hate to go back to the same old topic, but when does a ship get called too old for XYZ? Is a mid life refurbishment a better bet than a new build?
Instead of PO policy of 1-3 million per year (average last 4 years) a PROPER mid life rebuild, like the chunnel beaters had at Dover (look at their service record compared to design life).
Sorry, but I think with a new ship costing 100s millions it NEEDS a lifespan of at LEAST 30 years, with a major rebuild at 15 to keep up with new legislation...
I realise I don't operate marine equipment, so I can't apply my own industry model too far onto it
EDIT: TFM, see my comment about DFDS..
-
Well, Stena often has luck to order ships from scruffy yards - so they get them quite cheaper than estimated. Okay, and later.. ;)
-
Stena are a smart bunch... Look how quickly they progressed.

Dover and Calais in the same environment would look something like this!!
"target 29" is the Maersk Dunkerque!
-
See Dover-Calais in the Same Environment looks great... :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:
We just need to convince VSTEP and Maersk DFDS to get Target 29 into SSE...
-
Do you get irritated by that irritating advert on TV
"Join the DFDS sale cos DFDS has the perfect sofa ferry for you.... That's just what we've always wannn-ted."
-
Scary ghosts in the environment...
Luc
-
That looks scary :o
-
If you look carefully, you can clearly see the eypiece of a DALEK.
EXTREMINATE (as in extremes...)
-
do any of you think that in SSE in the DCISE should include one or two of the local ferries plus the new berths for Dover?
-
Personally I would prefer to have the old port, with the hoverport still there...
(which it appears is what is happening)
But I agree, we need some DCITS ferries
-
so a SNR4 hovercraft, European seaway, Pride of Dover, Pride of Canterbury and a incat like Hoverspeed rapide?
-
Sounds good to me...
maybe with a Seafrance or two... Renoir... Rodin...
And a Maersk as well...
Maybe the Dawn Merchant or European Endeavour as well to use Berth 1
hehe so it isn't going to happen...
I can dream...
-
well at last in the next 2 months there will be two racehorses operating from dover! the European Endevour and the yet to be name Chartered ship for LD (ex brave merchant and Ave liepaja).
-

You mean the Norman Bridge...
-
Who knows...
They could have chosen a better name...
Norman Spirit
Norman Arrow
Norman Voyager
...
Norman Bridge
-
WOW! the ave liepaja! That was a really nice ferry, used to operate out of the port of palma here on the island of MAjorca (Malorca). Under the brand of Iscomar.
Here is a photo I took of it
Used to be called "Blanca del mar" But im sure you all knew that!
-
Nice shot
She is the only racehorse that I haven't... yet... ;D
-
hehe sorry
Nice vessels the Racehorses
-
lol
Then again sometimes the best things are done by accident...
I saw the Condor Vitesse in Portsmouth by Accident...
And the Maersk Dovers maiden arrival...
And the Seafrance Belrioz Fog Entrance...
-
hehe sorry
Nice vessels the Racehorses
Agreed ;D Been on the Brave a few times from Birkenhead. Best livery for them was the Norse Merchant, with the black around the front windows
-
The Endeavour doesn't look too bad, pity shes not taken care of :-\ Any pics i have seen of her she is looking as rough as a badgers a..... ::)
-
Well the Endeavour has blown a boiler and is out of service... :-\
-
Yeah she always seems to look rather battered, compared to the rest of the fleet
-
COMON NORMAN ARROW!
Sorry for the caps, but I was sorta shouting it :P
(http://www.dover-film.com/Norman_Arrow__TN.jpg)
-
What I don't understand is in almost every picture of the Endeavour she seems to have scraped down the side of something ???
Not as bad as the Transmanche Twins
-
They had that same livery when they worked for Norfolkline on the channel too. The Endeavour looks quite smart but I don't like the Ave Liepaja livery..
Those are Epic Ferry's colours (her owners).
She sailed under those colours for her recent charter to Ave Lines, as did her sister ship T REX (lol) on her recent charter to T Link in Italy.
She will probably be repainted into LD colours for her forthcoming charter.
As much as you may not like the Epic livery, it has to be better than the Iscomar Yellow!
As an aside, the Pilar del mar, which was previously on an Iscomar charter is soon to take over the T REX's charter for T link.
-
The yellow isn;t too bad, reminds me of Transmanche Ferries
-

That's what fenders are for - to protect the hull steelwork! ;) :)
The fenders does all the cushioning when the vessel is coming up against a pier, thereby absorbing the shock.
-
Ship list for Douvres-Calais?
LD Dover
LD Calais
Seachance Canterbury
Seachance Burgundy
Brittany Ferries Kent
Brittany Ferries Endeavour
Pee and ohno SS Rustytub
As for racehorses- will someone PLEASE tell me why yu have named them that? They aren't exactly fast, graceful, or likely to win the Derby...
-
Don't ask me, that is just what the clas are known as...
WHich is odd as most ships aren't made as a 'class' anymore, which is a shame
-

The decor onboard is racehorse themed, The restaurant is known as the winning post, the drivers resaurant is the enclosure, the bar is something race horsey and the lounge upstairs is the grandstand.
There are also pictures of racehorses everywhere.
And anyway, they are fast and graceful! erm... oh wait.
-
THanks Clanky
-
Forgot to mention, they are great over fences as well.
-
How about over the top of the Dover Breakwater... there have been a few DCITSE ferries that have tried it!
-
Would love to be there with a video camera if that ever happened.
I think it would probably be safer to stick to ship sim for that sort of thing :-\
-

You DO realise how many posts are going to be on this forum from 6/6/10 about this don't you?
;D
-
Lol, set the wave height to max and surf into Dover, could be interesting!
-
Well once this white global warming melts from the pavement (!) then perhaps surfing up the high street in Douvres will be possible...
God help the relatively flat Calais...
-
Don't ask me, that is just what the clas are known as...

They are so called because they were named after famous Irish Racehorses Dancing Brave and Dawn Run, hence the 'Racehorses' name. As Clanky said, yep decor is also Irish Racehorse themed ;) Always thought they were quite elegant vessels, all in proportion and whatnot....
(maybe the cold of Icelands Freezers is starting to take its toll - maybe i need a holiday on the Norman Bridge)
-
i remember sitting on dover beach and seeing the seafrance molly enter for the first time. it was SO big at first.

Unlike certain Italian built vessels! :P

Unlike certain Italian built vessels! :P
Hopefully your on about the newer italian built vessels :P
Agreed, the new Vikings are a bit of a - well when designing them they must have used a comments and suggestions box so someone wanted an 'extended accommodation block' whilst someone wanted 'to be kept the same dimentions as their older sisters' as well as 'having more car deck space' coupled with 'not where you would expect to find a car deck'.
They are alright at a push, but the older generation are much more sleek with their pointy front end and AMPLE outside deck space (especially out the front) ;D
I know the older Vikings inside and out ::)
-
Never actually been on the older ships, but their little sisters are a bit of a horror story.
-
The older ones are similar to the newer ones, only with a simplier layout and a bit less space, seeing their accommodation block is half that of the new ones.
Granted the newer ones are a bit brighter and modern looking inside, with a bit more space to swing 2 cats as opposed to 1 in the older ones.
BUT
The older Vikings have so much outside deck space that is lacking from todays vessels. They have bow, back of the accommodation block (i'll not call it stern) and 2 levels on the port and starboard sides...probably more than most Irish Sea vessels put together!
-
Wow, how is it possible that this topic is on page #5 :o
(http://i40.tinypic.com/2n6rs6s.png)
Ha! ;D
-
We lost Stu...
I agree though this topic should always be on top ;D
Was that a recent Dover Passage?
-
It was last friday. We were underway to Lillebonne at the river Seine in France. We are now at the anchorage at Rotterdam, awaiting a free berth. Next trip Antwerp-Hamburg-West Thurrock. The latter would be very nice for some sight seeing in London :2thumbs:
-
Wow, how is it possible that this topic is on page #5 :o
Ha! ;D
I agree, and it is even more pointless now as all relevant decisions will have been made!!

Well, now that this campaign is successful, I propose a new one!
Scroll through this 2007 topic on the TRMA forum (http://www.titanic-model.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=123&topic_id=564&mode=full) (announcing that the poopdeck of the Titanic will be walkable in Ship Simulator 2008) and you should come across Jason DeDonno, the man who models Titanic for the Ship Simulator series, saying this:
One way or another yes, I want the whole interior. Whether this happens in Ship Simulator or not depends how VSTEP want the Ship Simulator concept to develop.
Technically, it is possible to do the whole of the interior in Ship SImulator, and VSTEP have expressed an interest in this. There has been talk of an add-on pack, just on Titanic.
I hereby propose the "VSTEP, Please Allow Jason DeDonno to Eventually Fully Model the Interior of the Titanic" Campaign
(Chances are good that if you don't like the idea of the campaign, you probably rarely use the Titanic to begin with ;))
Even if it's an add-on, it would be impressive, at some point years in the future. It would also certainly attract a fair-sized audience :D
-
Be a bit... heavy for the average computer though...?
-
Be a bit... heavy for the average computer though...?
Computers are continually increasing in computing ability, no? ;)
-
True... but still how many years would we need to wait though... :-\
-
Computers are continually increasing in computing ability, no? ;)
But unfortunately people pockets aren't increasing with Computers Capability...
Can you imagine the problems online with something like that?? She's already a problem already on MP Servers - and with a full interior?? Take a look at Hudizzles Titanic Model and see how heavy that is - it is an amazing model, but common, it's just not viable to have a full interior for a game, in which V-STEP want to make profit on....you have to bear in mind that V-STEP would actually like people to be able to play the game...
You also need to bear in mind the fact that few people use Titanic, and hardly online at all. Why should V-STEP be spending their time (And money) on a model which probably won't produce anything extra for them? Ie money, for their time and work?
Also - this isn't some "walk around" Simulator, it's Ship Simulator - stuff happens in the engine room and on the bridge, not in the dining room or the 3rd class cabins...Whilst it's alright to have a nice interior to walk around in, i'm sure Captain Smith didn't leave everything unattended to have a nosey around the ship...
If you want to compare it - look at Elbe. How often do you see pictures on this Forum of Elbe's interior? not often...although a Titanic interior may make some Titanic enthusiasts go "wow", it'll make the majority of people go "wow" because of how slow their Computers will be by the time they've finised with it...
Kind Regards,
Jack.
-
That is true!
When I play, I only care for other interior in the bridge and the places, where I go to manoeuvre the ship.
All others are only gimmicks, which reduce the computing power which is left for the game itself.
-
Can we at least have a mildly realistic campaign? Something that Vstep can actually do?
SR-N4
-
Can we at least have a mildly realistic campaign? Something that Vstep can actually do?
SR-N4
Pride of Dover in DCitSE in SSE
-
A little less realistic...
SR-N4
-
Stena Fantasia...? (In Sealink Colours)
-
SR-N4?
-
SR-N4?
Well...
Of course an SR-N4 would always be welcome ;D
What mark?
-
Well it's SS Extremes so why not a Super N4?
-
Great Idea :2thumbs:
-
Okay, now that I've just woken up for the day, I will admit that full interior would be a problem with MP ::)
Perhaps they can have it be in an add-on and revert back to the non-interior version when the player goes online?
Either way, I was thinking about what Jason DeDonno had said:
One way or another yes, I want the whole interior. Whether this happens in Ship Simulator or not depends how VSTEP want the Ship Simulator concept to develop.
That sounds to me like he's going to model a complete interior to his Titanic model, whether it gets in the game or not.
-
I doubt it would work, with miles of lag. I think the whole game would have to be devoted to walking around her, let alone sail her...
Please, pretty please, can the next campaign be SR-N4? ;D
-
I doubt it would work, with miles of lag. I think the whole game would have to be devoted to walking around her, let alone sail her...
You make it sound like it could happen in the near future
-
Can't wait to see something like this on MP! ;D
(http://i27.tinypic.com/10hsu10.jpg)
-
Nice...
*assuming my PC will handle SSE...
-
Look at the top-left corner. Ballast's playing in MP mode.
Spot the rammer!
-
It's always interesting to see how different people set up radars, I once sailed with a captain who threatened to sack a second mate because he used true vectors and relative trails.
-
So? As long as you are aware of the advantages and disadvantages of the radar settings you're comfortable with. They should sack the master for forcing his way of radar settings to others.
I used to sail on barges, the radars there arent so fancy as on sea. No ARPA, some weird kind of true motion, the only presentation is head up which results in spread out echos if you make large course alterations. Maybe the biggest difference, is in range - 800 metres is the most common...
Here i sailed in SP mode McG.. :P
-
They should sack the master for forcing his way of radar settings to others.
He was invited to resign in the end, but not over that incident. He was one of these guys who knew everything there was to know about everything so anyone who disagreed with him must be wrong.
When he launched the rescue boat with the ship still doing 5 knots through the water someone realised that it was time for him to go.
-
I generally find that if you're considering sacking the captain when the rescue boats are going out, it's probably a bit late.
-
late is not a word McG.
-
Eh?
-
late is not a word McG.
Perhaps you are confused by McG’s use of the adjective laat without an obvious object (it), but it is a common construct in English.
