Computer Issue
« on: July 11, 2008, 20:44:39 »

Hello there,
I know this isn't a computer help forum and it's only my 2nd post, but I have a prob. w/ my computer (not this one).
Alright here it goes, about 2 months ago I went to turn on my old Dell Dimension 2400 computer that I use for Photoshop and photo storage, and it wouldn't turn on. So, I brought it up to my schools IT dept. (I coach a hockey team) and they said it was the motherboard (Ouch, I know :-[). But, when I slide the cover of the side of the tower w/ it plugged in, there is a little LED light on the motherboard that is glowing brightly. So, then I called somebody I know who fixes computers and described my Issue to him and he told me it was the power supply inside the computer. Does anybody have any thoughts?
                                                                                                                     Thanks

Hi.

It could be the PSU.

But it could be the processor, the RAM or almost any component. That red light can mean different things in different makes of PC.

In many cases it means that processor isn't running properly or perhaps not all. That may not be the processor itself (but it might). It could be some other component is causing the problem.

It needs a PC repair shop, really. I doubt it is possible to do anything except guess from this distance!

Sorry.

A few more details,
The green LED has always been going since I got the PC. And, we had some major Lightning storms in weeks prior to me turning it on ( I don't use it that often, only for photos). Also, it runs Windows XP.
                                                                                           Thanks

P.S. This computer is a Mac using Boot Camp to run that stupid no good piece of junk Windows Vista

I think that confirms it. It really needs to be in the hands of computer tecchie. There is no certain way to diagnose the problem from here.  ;)

Thanks Terry :), I thought I'd try to get somebody else's opinion on it before I went and fixed it.

P.S. If the system board is fried, I still get files (3,000+ pictures) off the hard drive without fixing the system board, right?

Yes, you should be able to use it as the second drive in a newer PC. But, your drive may have an IDE or a newer SATA connector.

New PCs generally have SATA connectors. Older hard drives are usually IDE.

Check your drive to see which it is, and make sure that the new PC/Motherboard can access it. The image below shows IDE cable on the left and SATA on the right.

I'll move this tppic to Technical Support now, as other members may find it of use.

Here is something to try, after an electrical storm, sometimes the bios get messed up, there is a little battery inside the puter on the motherboard, take it out, wait a minute and put it back in, now youre bios is reset, try to turn it on.
Most of the time that little light is weak or blinkin, its or the bios, or a memory problem.
So if the battery thing dont work, try to take out one of the memory cards and try again.

Hope this will help ya

Best regards, Frank

Hi Frank.

Almost certainly it won't be that, although its worth trying. However:

Unless you know exactly what you are doing, DO NOT open the case of your PC. A little knowledge can be enough to get you killed!

Seriously!

I just fixed one with the same problem, did open surgery flipped his pacemaker (battery)  patient came back to life again.
If its the power supply, it dont do anything at all, they cant be half broken, there's almost nothing in them....hahahahah
But it was just a wild guess, i hope he can fix it, i know i can...just take another motherboard from the pile.

Best regards, frank
