Are the Shipyard ships fairly priced?

One of the two ships only available in the Netherlands... until now!... is among the first to be in the new shipyard, along with the Ocean Star, and the Elbe is sure follow, but comparing the amount of content with the games, it seems like the price of a single boat there seems a little out of whack. what do you think of the price of the Furie and Ocean Star being at 5 euro?

I think its fair. I mean If we were to buy them in a add on together they would cost 10 or more dollars. The ships had to be maid that cost money, and the ships had to be properly programed and animated and that cost money, and finaly Vstep has to make at least a small profit to pay the workers pay check and utility bills to stay in buisness. ;) Trust me the ships cost Vstep to way more to put it in the game than what we paid to get them.

I think it is on the low side, considering the amount of work involved. Remember that, in the case of F&E, some of that money is probably going to maintenance of those vessels.
Some ship models are submitted to VSTEP from outside modelers who are reimbursed.
I’ve paid more than that for a well constructed, highly detailed, locomotive from a third party.

I think that price is very cheap, i mean the amount of work that goes into these ships/boats is unreal, especially the Furie, i think its a very reasonable price and it does go to a good cause (the money), it goes to the upkeeping of that fine ship. So i'm more than willing to pay good money for it, and i've already got it hehe. Take a look at the Multiplayer section, i have a topic about my server for the furie.

Why does everyone have some kind of complaint. It is what it is, VSTEP is not changing their price. If you don't want to pay it, then don't buy it.

But I agree with EVERYONE except the topic starter that the price of creating it is immense.

Frankly I don't really think us Americans have it fair because of our currant (Really bad) exchange rate but, ::)

Personally for the quality of the model and the time that went into making it I think it is reasonably priced. :-\

Just curious.

I was doing the math with the game+expansion versus the model

So the Furie and the Elbe get more real world attention than the ships already in the game?

Seems an excellent price to me. Let's hope that they bring out lots of new vessels in this way. A regular input of new vessels would be marvellous, wouldn't it? And at these low, low prices (about the same as a Big Muck), it is not going to break the bank,

Sterling is very low against the Euro and has been for some time, 3 years ago is was .69p now .79p

I've a Query though. If these same ships (the one's on the Shipyard, and those included with New Horizons) are going to be in Shipsim 2009, will we get them for free because we've purchased them in 2008 (along the lines of 2006 ships in 2008)?

If we take everything into account I think it's a fair price, but I also think they made a huge mistake.
Think of any hugely successful game that exists today.
Got one?  Now think of the community behind it.  Why do you think it is so strong?
Because the developers release tools and SDK packs that help the community make the game better, by adding new items, objects, vehicles and environments.  Think of Microsoft Flight Simulator, the secret to its success is the enormous community behind it, a community that started for the development of mods or addons to the game.  Even games in the first person genre function much the same way.  Think counter strike or battlefield, both have huge communities behind them that exist in the creation of mods, maps, weapons, items or vehicles.  This is something I have noticed about ship simulator, without a modding community the game will be nowhere near as successful as it could be.  Right now the developers are trying to make money off of new ships, but they don't realize how many new ships could be added for free by all the people that want to make ships for it.  They can still continue to sell their ships, and they will do just as well as before, with flight simulator there is payware, and that's a booming market.  In flight simulator there are also literally tens of thousands of aircraft that have been created for free by dedicated community members.  And with more and more websites devoted to the development community so many new people will learn about the game and buy it.

well people can think of it both way as each ship is 4.99 or £4 each where as the addon is £14 and has 8 ships and a port so in terms of addon it is alot

We have definitely taken all these things into consideration, but for the moment it is still way too complex to get the dynamics for a ship right without professional programming skills. We are however looking into the possibility of making ship model and dynamics creation easier for our users, but it takes time. There are some users out there that can make very nice 3D models, but without their realistic dynamic behaviour they cannot be used in a realistic Sim as ours, simply because our users expect realistic dynamics.
 
That's also the reason why we don't use a generic dynamic model. First of all because our users expect realism, and a generic model for all ships would be very unrealistic indeed (there are plenty of other games with ships out there that prove our point - and we do not want to go that way and neither do our fans expect us to sacrifice realism - and we won't). Another point to take into consideration is the fact that all the ships in the game are REAL ships from REAL companies, and these companies - when they give approval to use their ships - want their ships to behave like the real thing. And right they are.

Your comparison with the action games is irrelevant when considering a simulator in which absolute realism is one of the key selling points. The Flight Sim community and FS series has a legacy of over 20 years (of which most of the time in the earlier versions there was no room to modify anything), and it has taken them - believe it or not - a very long time before the series was even given the permission to use real aircraft, airline companies, etc.
Legal issues are always something to take into consideration when simulating and featuring existing aircraft, ships, vehicles, etc. The SS community is still very young (2-3 years) - and ship companies are slowly but certainly learning to accept the advantages of featuring in our game, so the future is looking bright.

Yes. i love the Elbe and Furie. even when i dont have payed and played it. But the prize are good. i have changed my mind. and to get copryright to model and thats cost a lot. so i think we should be happy that they wanna add ships for us. why be negative. i love Vstep's Modeled Ships. the best i ever seen. so be happy.
