FireFox, Free but not free
« on: June 25, 2008, 17:20:14 »

I'm sure some of you know the totally FREE operating system of Linux or Unix and alike but you may not know that Fire Fox is banned form Linux systems.
Why -- The logo is <copy righted>

But Linux users wanted Fire Fox so they asked them to make another version that uses a different logo that isn't copy righted. Thus...

Ice Weasel (The opposite of Fire-Fox) Free for download.

"rebranded the Mozilla Firefox program, and other software released by Mozilla, so that Debian could continue to distribute the software with modifications permitted, without being bound by the use of trademark requirements that the Mozilla Foundation had required. The new names established by Debian were Iceweasel for Mozilla Firefox, Icedove for Mozilla Thunderbird, and Iceape for SeaMonkey. These changes were implemented in the subsequent version of Debian (Etch). In July 2007, Iceowl, a rebranded version of Mozilla Sunbird, was added to the unstable branch of Debian."

The above was direct form the Wikipedia on "Ice Weasel"
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Corporation_software_rebranded_in_Debian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Corporation_software_rebranded_in_Debian)>

so in other words, YES, this is true!  :D

I remember not so long ago, finding in Wikipedia that I had died of alcoholic poisoning in a Tibetan monastry. That was posted by a friend. It took a little while to get it taken down.

So, you can really trust everything you read there....

But in any case, this is referrring to an off-shoot of Firefox, isn't it? "unstable branch"

Ah, but if you go to
http://packages.debian.org/etch/iceweasel

You'll see that it does indeed exist.

But it isn't correct to say that it is Firefox that had the logo problems. It is Debian, who modified Firefox for their own purposes under the GNU licnse who have the problems.

"Iceweasel is a free software derivation of the Mozilla Firefox web browser."

I'm preparing a ship's radio course for ten people tomorrow. Yours is more boring than mine, though, I think.

Now this guy is going on about how in a Jewish Holy bread factory the person making the bread must through a small bit of the mother dough into the oven to symbolize a sacrifice.

I mean sure it's educational but... ::)

That's on a par with my book "250 most boring postcards from the USA".  ;D

Only beaten by "250 mind-numbing postcards from the UK".

I truly do have those books! Volume I and II of the usa postcards. (my wife's idea of a joke)

Some of them are absolutely mind-numbing. I simply cannot imagine why anyone might have produced them.

I'll scan some in and post them later.

It's OK, I didn't read it.

Question: If Firefox really is standards compliant, how come some of the javascripts that I produced worked fine in FF2, but now won't work with FF3? One or other must be non-compliant.  ::)  ???

So these calims must be rubbish, musn't they?
