Upgraded from Virtual Sailor to SS2008 but have problems

Hello,

After many years of playing Virtual Sailor I decided to try out SS0008 but I'm having major problems. My PC has  AMD Athlon 2800+ and an 128MB ATI Radion 9500 graphic card. I though it would run on low quality but the sea is very dark and my PC freezes after a few minutes of play.

I realise I need to upgrade my processor and graphics card. Can anyone please recommend a processor and card at a reasonable cost that will allow the game to play as it should.

if possible  you could buy an hp pavillion and get a geforce7600 from nividia.com if yuo have alot of u.s. currency,more than 300 at least,if im corrcet.i AVE NO other suggestions though.cheers,shipfan

If I can offer some advice on Graphics cards

Avoid the low-end models of any series, with nVidia GeForce these are the 'Go', 'LE' and 'GS' models, the best type to get are the ordinary models (without any letters), or the GT/GTX models

I'm sorry to disagree with you, [RWP]DJM, but the GS-line does amazing work. My mate has a 7600 GS 512 (AGP) and he has fantastic graphics on every game on the highest settings. The 7600 GT only has 265mb max on AGP. If you have PCI, the GT has more memory, so then you could choose the GT, but i don't really see a good reason for not having the GS.

Just my 2 cents.

my Geforce 6200SE has great graphics on everything, i can even run Microsoft Flight Sim X on full graphics, as far as a processor and graphics card, I have one question, do you want to stay with ATI and AMD? or would you mind switching?

Thanks for the advice. I am happy to change from AMD and ATI. All I want is to replace with a higher spec to enable a smooth game play. I am not very experienced with changing things out on my PC and not really sure what I need for the best performance.

I think I have a iMac with Windows Xp installed on it. My graphic card is a RadeonX1600 with a Intel processor. Runs SS08 pretty good.

Sorry, I wasn't saying that the GS models don't work well, just that there are differences between the GS and other models

Example:  I have a GeForce 6600 512mb, this actually performs better than the GeForce 7300GS (a friend of mne has this card).  Hope I made things a little clearer

It wasn't meant as a bad comment to you, don't get me wrong. 
I'm just worried that it scares people off for buying a GS, and go for the (more expensive) GT.
We all wan't to practice our hobby, but not everybody can cough up the money for expensive upgrades.
Again, this isn't a bad comment to you, i just wan't to bring a better view on the matter.

I do agree with you, to avoid the cheaper cards! But my geuss is, most modern mid-range cards will be suitable for the job.
I have a GeForce FX 5600, 265mb, and i will try to run SS08 with it. I did a complete re-install of my pc yesterday, so i hope it will work in the near future. If not, i'm going for the 7600GS, 512mb. Based on the expierences my mate (and i) have with this card.

Oh well, let's get on-topic again and help Murgy!

A 512mb card will not offer any performance advantage over a 256mb card - In fact it will probably be marginally slower (512mb low/mid range cards are a real scam).

A Geforce 7600GT 256mb is a very good card on a budget (we built much of the game using this card) and can be found for less than 60 pounds / 90 Euros online.  It is signifficantly faster than the standard/GS 7600 models.

Regarding the CPU - Intels Core2Duo chips are very fast and very cheap - the 6300 would work great and is  available for around 100 pounds/150 euros
