Hi jerome534,

Well, not all GeForce cards are manufactored by NVIDIA. Other companies built them to, but they're all still GeForces, and this one should probably do.

But if I am honest, I would try and find a better card, because you'd be right down in the lowest regions with a 5900. I had a 6600 before the one I have now (7900) and even with that I had to tune a lot down and could not run busy missions in the bigger ports.

Better would be to get a 7 series perhaps (As you have AGP and I don't think you can do any better than that). That is, if that is within your budget of course.

Just my thoughts, as you wont be able to fully enjoy this game with the bottom range card. And maybe future updates will make it run even worse, as the game can get more demanding after updates sometimes.

Regards,
Fred

I honestly can't say. It could vary a lot. I'd suggest looking around and see what you can find. Look up some reviews about cards you may find, as there are lots of different variations aswell.

I'm no expert on these things, unfortunatly.

Edit: (was writing when you edited it) A 7300GT should do good, I think. I don't know that card, but like I mentioned above, you can try to look up some reviews and such and see what the experts think about it.

Fred

Hi jerome534,
I don't know if you are aware of the difference between AGP and PCI graphics cards but if your computer only has an AGP graphics slot then they are the only ones you can install. If you have PCI-Express slots in your computer then you are better off with them as they are faster. There is also a difference between PCI and PCI-Express slots, (I think).

The 'Technical Support' forum is the best place to get accurate information on this. :)

Sometimes they let me out of Tech Support.  ;D

The best card you can get is probably the 8800 GTX.

The 8600 range are pretty good as well. They are quite cheap at present. If you shop around you may find one for around the $75-100 mark.

But 7300 is not bad, although you may still have to reduce some of the settings in Ship Simulator.

Are you sure that your PC has PCI-Express slots? Make certain before you buy that card. There are a lot of different size slots for video cards and none of them are interchangeable.

For a recent PC it is probably PCI-Express but could be 16 or 32 series.
AGP is another possibility.
PCI is possible but not likely unless your PC is more than a couple of years old. (PCI is very different from PPCI-Express)

All of the GeForce cards use chipsets designed by Nvidia, but the cards themselves may be made by any of a dozen or more different manufacturers. Because they can use cheaper components or reduce the amount or speed of the card's RAM, this means that not all cards are equal. But it is very complex and it isn't always possible to figure out if card A is better than card B.

Hope that's of some use.

I'll just but in.

I have a nVidia GeForce 6 series on my PC and ship simulator runs at LOW FPS and I have to bring the settings down pretty low. My laptop that has a nVidia GeForce 8400 (I hate ATI) can run ship simulator at full graphics (without reflections (kills my computer)).

The higher end cards may be a little more expensive but they are worth it. But also note your computer needs more then just a good graphics card to play with highest settings. RAM and your processor are also major keys.

That's a pretty good card.

I have twin 8600 GT cards on the main game server here (That's the one you're on if you use MP and go to the Creators Forum site).

That gives excellent graphics, with all the settings maxed.

The PC is a quad core 2.66GHz, with 4Gb RAM, running XP Pro, which helps.

My Server PC has nothing good except RAM and its processor. All the other stuff in it is junk. But that is what a server is meant to be. Not a gaming computer.  ::)

Hi Jerome534.

One is an actual Nvidia GeForce 8600GT. The other is an on-bard chipset. The Motherbaord is Asus, I think.

Your computer probably isn't PCI express. You might have a problem actually finding a new card for your PC in that case.

I think I found your PC on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-PCV-RS630G-Desktop-Pentium-Hyper-Threading/dp/B00029YNOS

If that is it, then the design is 4 years old and almost certainbly won't be PCI express. According to the specs, it has "three PCI expansion slots (two available), one 8x AGP (accelerated graphics port, available) ".

It is more likely that you will find an AGP card than a PCI card, but I don'tthink that any of the 8xxx series are available in AGP (unless someone knows better). Sorry.  :'(

The best I could see was 7800 series. I don't have any experience of that one.

It looks as though it should, but you'd need to confirm that with the supplier of the card.

Tell them the model number of your PC and ask them to confirm that it will work. If there is any problem, the responsibility will be theirs.

If you just ask for that card, and it then doesn't work, it will be down to you!.

I hate to disgree, but I have two PCs with three 8600 cards between them and one with 8800 GTX.

The 8800 GTX is "top of the range", but for Ship Simulator, it isn't possible to see any difference. Numerous independent reviews agree with me. PC World, PC Buyer and others have all said that the 8800 GTX is the King and that the 8600 series are very close behind.

As 8600 is one half or one-third the price of the 8800 GTX, it seems a pretty good card to me.

You may have had a different experience, but who knows what the reason was? I doubt it was the card, unless you had a faulty one. Could be as simple as your BIOS not set up correctly.

Graphics  cards these day are becoming much bigger with experimental cooling systems, my Radeon 9200 PCIE takes up its own slot and 1 PCI slot due to the cooling system attached  which is not to dissimilar to a fridge cooling system, But it runs all my games in Full and that is what i was looking for, but of course with the vast array available it is personal choice as to the desired card required.

Quite a lot of games are just as dependent on the CPU you have as the GPU (graphics), so you could probably get the best graphics card available but if you have only an average CPU then you wont be able to tell much difference between any of the best cards.

9600 ;D Top notch graphics card there my friend, also very expensive i believe, but i'm sure its probally well worth the price. But watch when buying new graphics cards as you may have to upgrade your pc's power supply. thats the case with my server/secondary pc. I have a NVIDIA GeForce 6200SE it does great for a low end model, but it needs an a new one. Hope that helps
