My new Accordion!
« on: June 10, 2008, 19:17:44 »

Hi everyone,

As some of you may know i am an Accordion player! i play mostly Irish and Scottish traditional music and as time goes on your skill for playing the accordion (and that goes for any instrument) gets better, so, that means an upgrade! i could go into the technical stuff about accordions but most of you probably wouldn't have a clue haha. But anyway, i wanted to share some pictures of my new accordion with you all,

Here they are!

Here is my YouTube Channel like guys:  http://youtube.com/user/IRI5HJ4CK

Hiya Jack :)

Very nice, I like it :)

I like Irish music, but less-traditional stuff.  I prefer music by "The Corrs" (Andrea is a babe ;D), and "Westlife" ;)

Regards.

Carl.

P.S. Wouldn't have a clue is right, for me anyway :D

haha all good stuff ;D :D, accordion's are really technical as far as building them goes, thats why they are so expensive to buy, good makes like Weltmeister (german) Hohner (German again) and many Italian makes are sky high with prices, top of the range accordions can go higher than £8,000. My new one was expensive because it isn't a mas produced product, its a one off hand made accordion (which is a first for me).

Fascinating stuff, I wouldn't know where to start with an Accordion (or most other musical instruments for that matter) :-[

It does look nice though, expensive too.  I bet you love it though eh ;)

haha, its a nice "box" i think i will have that for a long time. Heres a nice fact,
If you look after your accordion nobody will ever know its age, and its a true saying, my music teacher has had his "box" since he was 13, and its in great condition, even i didn't have a clue what age it was, and i'm pretty well "clued up" on accordion types. ;D

oh and for loving my accordion, yes. :D i always remember my first competition with it, i had been playing the accordion for 6 weeks and i won my first major competition in Ireland, its called the "Fleadh Ceoil" its a well known competition in Ireland and it dates back a long way. I've been playing for 3 years now and i also have a nick name also from it hehe ;D

Jack In The Box haha

Have you ever put it on a hard surface and let it vibrate. Very cool! It even moves around.

Hiya Jack!

Very nice instrument indeed!!
I've got one too but it's merely decorative as I never really got much out of it..  ;D
It's a really old one too, 1930's. It still looks really good, though not as good as yours.  ;)

Here's what I play mainly these days (apart from guitar and bass):

Hi Irish Jack.

My Mum used to play the accordian when I was a kid (when dinosaurs roamed the earth). It was one of the first instruments that I ever tried to play, but at age 5, it was simply too big, so I learnt the harmonica (mouth organ) instead.

My wife is a gaelic music-lover. She has 8 folk harps of all sizes. A couple of years ago, we went to Galway for a couple of weeks to oversee a chap there who was building a new harp for her. She took one of her other harps so that I could get some photos of her playing it, to send back to the manufacturer in the USA.

We found a ruined castle and set it all up. She wore traditional Irish clothes and and down and started playing. Within moments, three coaches pulled up and loads of American tourists jumped out and started taking photos. "Do you speak English, Coleen?" asked one of them.

My wife has a wicked sense of humour (and she can speak Irish Gaelic), so she answered in Gaelic. "Ooh", said the group, and clicked away merrily. They then did the traditional exercise of talking slowly and loudly to make her understand that they wanted to take photos while she played. One of them tried to mime harp-playing to give her the idea.

My wife started playing. Only it was the Frank Sinatra song "My Way". She then switched into some Bruce Springsteen and finally went into some Bon Jovi numbers. All played as Irish Jigs.

They eventually got in their coach and drove off, never realising the joke.

Why did she play that music? Well all of them come from New Jersey, just like my wife, American that she is...

One thing we have found is that as long as my wife carries a harp, we never have to buy our own drinks in Ireland. I carry a bodhran (a sort of  Irish drum) and accompany her for some of the jigs and reels. That gets me all the diet cokes I can drink!

Irish Jack, do you play in pubs or clubs?

Fred, dig the skins!
