Unhappy players.
« on: April 04, 2008, 12:35:44 »

I'm not sure where to put this post, but perhaps here on "Small talk" is most appropriate. I feel of late that there seems to be an awful lot of moaning about this and that, missions not being 100% and this or that not being absolutely perfect.
Having spent quite some time working as a seafarer, one of the things I learnt quite early on was the workings of "Sods Law". If things can go wrong they will :o. I also learnt that Jolly Jack did not spend wasted time moaning about it, but had to set to and sort things out, one way or another. It is quite definately not possible to do things "By the book" all the time, and certainly not at sea. I think in terms of the many complaints about New Horizons which I have read already, after only a few days. Part of the fun, for me anyway is working out how to get round the glitches which appear. If, for example, I was trapped in harbour by a vessel blocking my exit, what would I do? The only thing I could do is a) throw up my hands and give up, or b) work out a way out of it.  The latter can be done in this game, without serious damage to my player ship. In reality, I would get some fenders out and use them.
I remember once loading a ship in Liverpool heading for the West Indies. The Company stevedores insisted on loading two 20 foot containers on deck at the sides of no.3 hatch. That hatch had only 2, 5 tonne derricks  to load and discharge with. The Jumbo derrick for heavy lifts being at no 2 hatch. I told the stevedores that we could not get the containers off in Port of Spain, yet they insisted there was a floating crane at that port which we could use. I knew very well that there was no crane there, but I was ruled out of order and the containers stayed where they were. When the ship arrived in Port of Spain the containers were discharged, undamaged by our own gear, we just didn't moan and say it can't be done, we just worked out how to do it and did it.
The point I make is that there are more ways to kill a cat than choking it on cream. So could I ask that a little lightening up would go a long way? This simulator is about pleasure not misery. ;D

Yep, there a lot of moaners about this forum. I say those "moaners" should be thankful they even have ShipSim in the first place. VSTEP worked so hard on these games, and all they get back is people pointing out everything they did wrong and negative comments  >:(

Greetings,
Negative comments are not bad for the game,if they can be turned to improve the game.

Moaning can be positive too. All kinds of feedback is positive. If people didn't give feedback how in the Earth can you improve a game then? Expressing thoughts and ideas is what improves the game. VSTEP is glad to get feedback after what I did see on a YouTube video showing the back-stage of Ship Simulator where Pjotr was interviewed :)

Marcstrat - you have a very valid point there. I think I buy that one from you ;D

I hope people have not got the wrong idea from my post. I fully agree that CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is vital and necessary. What I was meaning was the number of DESTRUCTIVE critics we are encountering. The world is a pretty rough place nowadays and I feel a little more pleasantry is not out of order. It's no good sitting on the pity pot, it's much more fun to have a go!!!!

Angus,
Now that VSTEP have announced that they will develop Ship Sim 2009 with a new ocean model, there is moaning about having to buy a new SS and not being able to use the ships they have.
Probably the same folks kept asking for things like higher waves, waterspouts, etc. that could not easily be done within the present architecture, and would most likely require extensive changes in the ships as well.

Hi Angus,
Some things you can get round, some you can't. 'Tis all part of the fun, surely! And there are helpful people about to help beginners with technical and program problems.

Come on chaps, lets have a good old moan about the moaners :)

(I hope irony is not lot on everyone)

Angus makes a really good point though. Perhaps when on a ship stuck in the middle of a big lake like the Atlantic makes one more self- reliant... Necessity is the mother of invention.

I used to take trucks half way around the world (well, South London anyway) and quite often would suffer a breakdown- but I could usually get them going again, just by using a few basic tools and bits and pieces that I had around at the time (basic pliers, coil of wire, matches, spare engine).
The moral of this story...? Basically as Angus said- stop moaning and get some perspective on life.
