HI Matt,

we had a simular topic a couple of months ago...the main outcome being yes it is slightly annoying but it does add to the ambiance of the simulator.   There are ways (unoffical  ;) ) of adding in some more voices or sounds for the radio transmissions... Do a search and see what you find!  ;D

happy sailing David

The recordings are just VSTEP workers blubbering and blowing on the mike, is it. That is the most possible answer.

It would be nice to have an official VHF type radio from the developers making use of Teamspeak or another programme that is linked into the sim with proper rules or radio etiquette (spelling) etc.

There are also some topics on this subject that are quite interesting but I think it would be a nice feature to have, if the rules were laid down so you have private channels for people to talk about what they had for breakfast and then tug channels and the main VHF channel for port operations, much more realistic than listening to a loop of real VHF.

Could not agree more with you PigDog... Yes we can use Kanonenfutter's ts, it's quite well organized, but it would be much better as a built-in function that starts with SS. That way we would get more to use it, and it makes comm. much more realistic and free the screen from a lot of clutter....

PS: And a little VHF training will hurt nobody, could even proove to be quite usefull for many...

Very annoying because QHM talking to ships going in and out of Pompey isn't really relevant for any other locations.

Yes Stuart that was my main gripe that you are listening to QHM will entering San Fransisco.... ??? would have been nice to have different loops of VHF coms for the different locations..and now with New Horizons perhaps Falmouth Coast Guard and some traffic info on the Lands End TSS... ;)

Any way am repeating what i have said else where and might get told of by a mod!!  ;D

I don't think you will be told off by anyone, but why do you guys insist on having static VHS noice in the background? Sooner or later that will be boring to listen to. Why not just make our own VHF communication by using teamspeak or other communication software?

I'm sure there is a lot of guys that would have time to make a little manual for VHF use, if not then I will find the time, as I hold a VHF certificate. Trust me it's not complicated, and it will put a lot more realism into the MP part.

Good evening.

For the past few months, I have been working with Mad_fred on a set of radio and horn sounds. Vstep have announced them to the world in todays newsletter. They will be available soon, but as an overview, here are some details:

Radio:

A set of 8 different sound "packs" which you can install before you launch Ship Simulator

Western Solent
Mid Solent
Eastern Solent
All Solent
Solent North Sea
Padstow
Mayday set
Pilot set

In total these bring around 12 hours of new radio sounds. It is unlikely that you will encounter much repetition of the sounds unlike the present set. (Ship Simulator will "lock on" to the main set of sounds in the pack, which are around 50-90 minutes duration, depending on the set you select).

These are all genuine sounds. Squelch has been applied!

I intend to record sounds for Rotterdam and New York while on my travels over the next few months so look out for updates.

Horns & Whistles:

38 new ship and crane and ducky sounds. All of them are long-duration sounds like the Titanic (that is, you press and hold for some seconds to hear the entire sound).

Thats good news Terry!

I read in the newsletter about your assist and no really looking forward to downloading the next upgrade!

unfortantly i live to far from the sea to pick up VHF trasmissions, though my parents still live by Poole and my Dad often has a portable radio tuned in to Poole HArbour Control to listen to the ferrys coming in and out.... ;)

For me, I live by the coast in Selsey (Eastern end of the Solent). I have various boats and go up and down the Solent quite often. So I had an adavantage!

Next plans are to go to Rotterdam and New York to make more sound sets. It will take a few months, I expect, If people want, I may also be able to release more Solent & Padstow sound packs in the meanshile.

They are actually real transmissions taken from Queens Harbour Master (QHM) who control all traffic in and out of Portsmouth and also traffic entering the Solent heading to Southampton, beyond a certain position, they are then transferred to Southampton VTS.
The cool thing for me is that I am actually on a recording, I worked as an officer on the Wightlink vessels and can be heard calling "QHM, St. Faith, Swashway for the camber please".

But the radio sounds like ''uhh caen uo gi me the --------------' ::)' and ''fffffffffffffffffffff uoe rade ansdo-----------------------'' and so much blowing. :P but there is a radio message quite clear, it says, ''-----Can you give me the -------'' :o and i also heard some things about entries of harbours. But i had extracted some foul words from the transmission. one starts with F and ends with K and one starts with P and ends with D. :)

Absolute rubbish!

I have listened to these recordings for some years (they are the same as in the 2006 version) and they are genuine recordings taken during a race day in the Solent, from Channel 10 (QHM channel). I can understand every word that has been spoken.

Every message is spoken with the utmost politness, as is the way on the Solent. There are absolutely no foul words nor even bad tempers in any of the sounds.

You do a great disservice to these fine people by making such outrageous claims.

You were just making false claims about the sounds being Vstep "blubbering" and now you make false claims about swear words. Shame on you!  ???

In the 12 hours of new sounds, recorded by me and about to be released by Vstep, I recorded for about 100 hours, and there was not one word that was anything except utterly polite at any stage.

I know quite a lot of the people whose voices have been recorded. They never swear on the radio. Apart from the fact that they are true gentlemen and Spambot, it is considered to be unacceptable behaviour.

Thanks, I totally agree, during the 4 years working on the solent everyday, i never once heard foul language of any sort, besides, QHM can easily fine anybody that was to use it.
