23.75 to 0: How long does it take to stop the Titanic?
« on: March 30, 2008, 10:28:38 »

due to the fact that only 2, not 3, propellers on the Titanic could go backwards, the ship takes an eternityto stop. my question: from full speed ahead, if both engines are left on full speed astern, about how many NM does the Titanic travel before coming to a complete stop?

I know when at speeds higher than 4 knots you are not supposed to use reverse thrust to slow down my boat and I would expect the same to apply to the Titanic. :-\

Why don't you try it and see? Do you really need someone else to play your Simulator for you?  ;)

I was hoping for something a bit more definitive than that. (like 2345.73 times it's own length if there is an "R" in the month)

I was in the middle of the water of the Mu Koh Phi Phi islands, so it was hard to be precise, but I got a feel for it

So neither of you knows exactly then?

Did you really need to restart a long dead thread to not give us any information, TheTitanicExpert?  ???

Go on, do tell. How long? You can round it to the nearest second.  ;)

And where did 23.75 knots come from RMS Gigantic? You lost me there...

And as this was never about missions, I'll move it to "General Discussions".  :D

Still Terry, the bump did serve a purpose as I had a good laugh from your previous remark.  ;D

the best way to know how long it takes for titanic to stop,do a practice cruise with the following:the solent english channel, titanic, direction heading;south, calm day. and go untill you reach 21 knots.when you do revers the engines.

I'm just teasing RMS Gigantic and others.  ;D

Glad you enjoyed t, Fred.

External sources give that as its top speed.

However, the ship's top RPM is 80 RPM

Making a coorilation, this leads me to believe that the ship's top speed is 23.75 knots when at 80 RPM

and since 75 RPM is the game's top, it leads me to believe it can not be obtained in-game

Ever tried running the Ocean Star at full ahead in NY harbor and hitting a dock?

Over half the ship pokes out of the water!

Do you mean the Ocean Star? if you do, it does take a long time, but i suppose its good for the size of the ship.

In my experience Ocean Star stops very quickly for a ship of that size - it's the azipods that help
