Amsterdam - North Sea Canal
« on: July 04, 2007, 23:50:35 »

I remember once travelling on a ship that went into Amsterdam. It went over a road tunnel at one point.

A friend doesn't believe me. Anyone got any photos or a good site on the net to look at, please?

I remember it was a Sealink ship and I'm sure no ferries run up there now, just cruisers. (might be wrong)

In total, you crossed 3 road-tunnels!
The Velser-tunnel, the Wijker-tunnel and the Coen-tunnel! ;D

Don't have pictures of them, though, to bad.

Thanks. I've always wanted to go back and see Netherlands a bit better anyway so I might go and see it from a road perspective.

I only remember one road though. It was weird going over a road in such a big ship. I'll keep a watch for the others.

Ive tried looking for ferry routes going to Amsterdam, but just cruisers and freighters now :(

The first tunnel is the Velser-tunnel. Comming from IJmuiden-lock. On starboard you can see the road, but you can surely see the ventilation-towers!
The second tunnel is the Wijker-tunnel, you can see the raod on both sides of the canal.
The third tunnel is the Coen-tunnel, you can only see the ventilation-towers from this tunnel, it's near Amsterdam. And i'm not sure, but i beleive there is a forth tunnel from Amsterdam-centre to Amsterdam-North. But it could be closed. ???

Thanks Eemspoort.

As I said, I only remember seeing one. Since I've not had a holiday in a few years I'm taking the chance to grab a few weeks off, take the car and a passport and just head 'that way over there' and see were I end up.

I know really very little about Netherlands, and I hope to change that. Sounds a very varied country. I've only been on a ferry with 3 hours in port and then once taking a vehicle there briefly.

Any areas you can recommend that really show the 'true' Holland? As opposed to seeing loads of drunk British lager louts on a weekend away?

Wow, thats a hard one. Well, Amsterdam ISN'T the place to be. ;D

Holland has a lot to offer, mate, i can't recommend a place, to be honest. Every "provincie" has it's own character, so it could be worth, travelling criss-cross through Holland? Maybe with a rental-mobile-home?
It's just a suggestion for seeing a lot of Holland in short time. Holland is a small country, so you could see the "big lines" in a few days.

Thanks Eemspoort. I think I'll probably just travel by road up from Belgium and make up my route as I go along.

Sometimes the best places are found by accident!
